Islam, established in the 7th century CE, is the youngest major religion with over 1.5 billion followers, predominantly in Asia and Africa. Central to Islam are the teachings of Muhammad, the Quran as its sacred scripture, and the Five Pillars of Islam which structure the faith and practice of Muslims. The two primary sects of Islam are Sunni, making up the majority, and Shi'a, with branches differing primarily on the succession of leadership after Muhammad.
