2. PERSONAL VALUES DO MATTER
You may believe that there’s no place for principles in the
cut-throat world of business, and that to be a successful
leader you must be ruthless.
Admittedly it does become harder as you climb up the
career ladder, and you find yourself facing fewer reality
checks…however, retaining your own personal values can
improve your career and organisation!
If you live up to the standards you set yourself, you can
become your own powerful role model and set clear
examples to others. It’s also easier to gain your
employees’ trust when you are seen to be sticking to your
principles.
3. A value system will help you become aware of why
you make the choices you make, and it will provide
an internal guide for when you are faced with difficult
decisions.
Authentic leaders develop their own style of
leadership, consistent with their own personality and
values.
4. IF YOU WANT TO GET CLOSER TO YOUR
VALUES IT’S IMPORTANT TO…
1. Get to know yourself: Identify what you stand
for and what matters to you with a values assessment
– it’s time to accept yourself for who you are.
2. Prioritise your values: Work out which values
are priorities to you. This is important for decision-
making – sometimes you have to make a choice
between solutions that satisfy different values.
3. How much do you adhere to your moral
code? Try to align your behaviours with your moral
beliefs to avoid internal conflict.
5. 4. Be true to yourself in your own company:
Analyse the choices you make to ensure that they are
the right ones, even if no one will notice.
5. Be authentic: Say what you mean, be true to
yourself, and operate with integrity.
6. Be confident: Identify your strengths to give you
confidence to be true to your values.
6. 7. Maintain humility: Remember who you are and
what your roots were – this will help you to keep
things in perspective when you face decisions.
8. Be brave: have the courage to always stand up
for what you believe in and speak up for what you
think is right.
9. Take responsibility for your actions: everyone
makes mistakes occasionally, so it’s best to own up to
it immediately and try to right the situation.
7. KEEP IN MIND OTHERS PERSONAL VALUES
It’s always good to be aware of other people’s values, as
well as your own. Personal views may sometimes clash
and you may disagree with others but it is important to
respect and try to understand where others are coming
from.
If you focus too much on your own value system, you may
end up pushing your employees or clients into making
decisions that reflect what you think they should do –
based on your values and beliefs – rather than allowing
them to come up with their own ideas.
There is a place for personal values in leadership, and
leading in harmony with your own principles will make you
happier, more trustworthy and respected leader!
