11. KEY LESSONS
Included Sporting Organisations among our partners
Getting buy-in: lots of personal contacts and some cold calling!
Conducting interviews or finding a committed volunteer in a sporting
organisation more successful than seeking direct submissions
Limited success with media attention
Sporting Stories are human stories - look for stories that show the human
dimension in sport

The Sanctuary Runners is a community running initiative which enables Irish residents to run alongside, and in solidarity with, people in need of international protection currently in the Irish Direct Provision system to allow friendship, positivity in the face of adversity and respect while bringing greater awareness to the migration system. The team spanned 40 nationalities. A year later 360 Sanctuary Runners took part in the race.
In 2019, the Sanctuary Runners spread to a dozen different locations across Ireland - from Killarney to Sligo and Longford to Waterford. There’s now 1,200 runners across Ireland, participating in over 30 running events across Ireland and they also work with the parkrun
