Ireland gained independence from Great Britain in 1922 after years of conflict, forming the Irish Free State. During this time of transition and war, Ireland suffered greatly from famine and disease that killed over one million Irish and caused another 1.5 million to emigrate. A civil war then erupted over the establishment of the new Irish Free State government and its relationship with Britain.
