Islamic banking emerged in the late 20th century to offer financial products and services in accordance with Sharia (Islamic law) principles such as a prohibition on interest and a focus on asset-backed transactions. Early Islamic banks were established in the 1960s-1970s in countries with predominantly Muslim populations. Over subsequent decades, Islamic banking has expanded globally and new products have been developed to meet evolving customer needs within Sharia guidelines.
