Invasion Of The Body Snatchers

Short Essay #3

Invasion of the Marriage Police
Invasion of the Body Snatchers is widely dubbed an anti–Communist film by those who have seen
it. The plot of the movie is that unfamiliar, extraterrestrial "body snatchers" are taking over the
bodies of people in a small town in California while they sleep, and replacing them with clones that
lack emotion. For the most part, a general consensus has been reached that the mass hysteria about
the "pod people" in the film is reflective of the red–scare consumed society of the 1950's. However,
the article that I read that was written in response to this film suggests that it is instead a cynical
representation of post–WWII, traditional American domesticity.
The article that I read that was pertaining to Don Siegel's 1956 adaptation of Invasion of the Body
Snatchers is called "Lovelier the Second Time Around: Divorce, Desire, and Gothic Domesticity in
Invasion of the Body Snatchers", written by Jennifer L. Jenkins. Jenkins suggests that rather than
being a science fiction film that has an anti–Communism message, Invasion of the Body Snatchers
is actually a Gothic narrative that presents domesticity and marriage in general as a crippling
institution. The 20–page article offers up many examples throughout the film that reinforce the idea
that the transformed "pod people" represent the traditional, domesticated individuals while those
who remain in their authentic state represent non–conforming

The Red Scare: The First Major Anti-Communist Movement
Throughout the 1950s, society was going through a period of post was confusion. After the end of
World War, I, the first major Anti–Communist movement began in the United States, this was
widely known as The Red Scare. The Red Scare was the growing fear of Communism in America.
Being a Communist became illegal in the U.S. due to the fact that the Communist party was a
radical movement that promoted rebellion and violence. The fear created by the development of the
Soviet Union after World War I, and the rise to power of the Soviet Union after World War II caused
widespread fear among many. Americans were encouraged to keep an eye on their friends and
neighbors to ensure that they were not Communists or Soviet spies passing secrets to the
Communists.

Invasion Of The Body Snatchers
The film begins with Dr. Miles Bennell telling the doctors at a mental hospital what had occurred
over a period of one week. On his way home to Santa Mira from a medical conference, Miles almost
hits Jimmy Grimaldi with his car, and after talking to his grandmother, he learns that her husband
lost interest in maintaining the vegetable stand. When he arrives to his office, he learns that Wilma
believes someone is impersonating her uncle Ira, and Jimmy comes in claiming someone is
impersonating his mother. After making a house call, Miles determines that Uncle Ira is not an
imposter, and he refers Wilma to a psychologist, Dr. Kauffman. While on a dinner date with Becky,
Miles gets an emergency phone call and rushes to Jack and Teddy's home. There ... Show more

After Miles realizes that Becky has been transformed, he calls her "an inhuman enemy bent on my
destruction". This statement can also refer to communism. Many people believed that communists
were an enemy with the goal of destroying democracy and the life of Americans and their allies. The
end of the flashback plays the largest role in playing into the fears of the American people because
Miles stares at the camera screaming hysterically "they're here already! You're next!" By using the
symbolism of the body snatchers, these statements exaggerate the fears that communists are in the
United States, and if people are not careful, they will be next to fall under the communist invasion.
Also, by using the vague term of "they're" the writers allow the watchers to fill it in with anything
they fear. Because communists were a primary fear of people in the time, people could easily
replace "they're" with communists. By using the symbolism of the body snatchers and the diction,
the film plays into the political climate of fearing for the invasion of

Body Snatchers Allegory
The Invasion of the Body Snatchers, directed by Don Siegel, utilized action and a flashback
sequence. At the beginning of the movie, the audience members see a frantic man in a doctor's office
saying that he is sane and tells his accounts of the body–snatchers. The screen goes blurry, which
indicates that there is a flashback/story being told. The flashbacks worked in this film because they
helped establish that the story occurred in the past and it's from the main character's–Dr. Miles–point
of view.
There are many arguments whether Invasion of the Body Snatcher is an allegory to the Communist
Movement. Jeff Saporito from ScreenPrism takes a closer look at the film and how it relates to
communism. He states that there were themes of hysteria

Them ! Movie Analysis
As the final shots of the second World War were dealt, the first shots of the Cold War were fired.
After World War II, America was prosperous. They had not experienced a significant postwar
recession, nor were the masses unemployed. The United States had experienced extraordinary
economic growth in the years following the war.Despite the prosperity and growth experienced that
succeeded the war, the fear of Communism plagued the minds of Americans. Americans became
increasingly worried about the spread of Communism, and the threat of Communism destroying the
lives and values of the American people. They saw it as a threat to Democracy itself, and the fear,
the paranoia experienced by the Americans was expressed in pop culture.

The mere thought of a nuclear event or a nuclear attack on the united States was enough to scare the
entire country, but mutants and strange creatures as a result of it was over the edge. It was not much
a fear of the monsters themselves and their grotesque and gigantic appearances, but what they
represented in the films. Take the film "Them!" for example. Ants exposed to radiations as a result
of nuclear testing, has turned them into gigantic, mutated ants that are terrorizing the people of New
Mexico. The giant mutant ants are used in the film to not only show the dangers of nuclear war, but
to portray the soviets in a new way. In the film, Dr.Medford refers to ants in general as " savage,
ruthless, and courageous fighters". By labeling the ants as savage and almost barbaric creatures, the
same could be said about the Soviets at the time. The Soviets were seen as hard, and crude like the
ants in the film, who attacked and killed innocent people.By looking at the poster for the film, we
can see the correlation between ants and Communists. The poster features a frightened women in the
jaws of a mutant ant screaming " kill one and two more take its place!". Both the giant ants and the
soviets were seen to operate as a hydra. It didn't matter if you killed one breast or one communist,
because when one dies two more will replace it. The Soviets, like the ants, had strength in numbers,
a greater population that the Americans. At the end of the film "Them!" they find the ant's den and
throw gas in the hole and attempt to destroy and kill all the ants living in the den. When they jump
down into the cavern, they have discovered that two queen ants have escaped, and traveled to
California to create a new colony. Again, this could be characterized similarly to the theme of the
underground mentioned above, but it goes somewhat deeper than that.

Essay Classical and Post-Classical Hollywood Cinema
Classical and Post–Classical Hollywood Cinema
INTRODUCTION
During the course of this essay it is my intention to discuss the differences between Classical
Hollywood and post–Classical Hollywood. Although these terms refer to theoretical movements of
which they are not definitive it is my goal to show that they are applicable in a broad way to a
cinema tradition that dominated Hollywood production between 1916 and 1960 and which also
pervaded Western Mainstream Cinema (Classical Hollywood or Classic Narrative Cinema) and to
the movement and changes that came about following this time period (Post–Classical or New
Hollywood). I intend to do this by first analysing and defining aspects of Classical Hollywood and
having done that, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
We have a white male heterosexual protagonist. Also a structure of order/disorder/order restored is
one of the most fundamental. This structure is will proceed in a linear trajectory towards a high level
of closure or resolution. Every question which is raised during the film must be answered. Within
our linear trajectory we have a cause and effect pattern which means we will watch an action in one
scene and proceed to see its effect or re–action on the following scene. In TOUCH OF EVIL (Orson
Welles, USA, 1958) we open with a honeymooning couple. Within moments there is an explosion
and disorder is created almost instantly. Our central protagonist, in this case Charlton Heston,
combats this disorder for the duration until he eventually finishes back in the arms of his wife. This
example represents what David Bordwell (Narration of the fiction film, Madison: University of
Wisconsin press, 1985) means when he says "usually the classical syuzhet presents a double causal
structure"2. Two plot lines, one which involves a heterosexual romance and another which causes an
external struggle (usually for the man and if for the woman inevitably solved by the man).

Regan's Relationship With Her Mother In The Exorcist
In the film industry, women act as the devil's portal because they are deemed weaker compared to
the men – in The Exorcist, it is Regan. According to a psychological interpretation of the film by
Blatty and Friedkin, Regan's parents are divorced, she is jealous of Burke, she's often rejected by her
dad (clover, 1992:71) and that the relationship with her mother was fine and great before that. With
that being said, Regan's relationship with her mother is why she was possessed. After the
possession, her attitude towards Chris changed as the act of rebel can represent the fact that she
wants to remain close to her mother. 'The deep bond between mother and daughter is reinforced in

Invasion Of The Body Snatchers Essay
Don Seigel's 1956 film "Invasion of the Body Snatchers" shook many viewers with its brutal
imagery of an invasion, a take over, that was almost impossible to differentiate from the normal
behavior of society at that time. Neighbors would be completely normal one day, go to sleep, and
wake up where "everything else is the same, but not the feeling" that those close to them had come
to recognize. Wilma, a desperately worried niece of a recently 'Snatched' citizen, can feel the
difference all too well in her family members. The film was able to terrorize the hearts of so many
watchers due to its ability to hit so close to the situation many of them were experiencing at that
time. The 1950's were rife with social and political changes, from changes in rights to changes in the
political ring of the world. Communism, for example, seemed to be invading the minds of friends
and neighbors alike all across the country from the views of American citizens. In fact, it was these

We are just not that aggressive towards different ideas anymore. We are politically correct, even if it
hurts both parties involved. If someone started spouting out anti–majority opinions in today's cities
they might get the stink–eye and some hate–mail, but they probably wouldn't be killed over it. Or at
least their death would result in a huge legal battle that would probably damage that community for
years to come. No one had that same protection in the 1950's. We are much luckier now, like how
Dr. Bennell was lucky when he was finally believed at the end of the film of the dangers the pods
caused for the rest of the world. Finally, someone will listen to different ideas instead of calling the
speaker crazy and in need of mental

The Cold War Between East And West From The End Of The...
From 1948 to 1991 countless anti–communist films were made, dominating the stage of
transnational politics and geostrategic affairs between East and West from the beginning to the end
of the USSR. The Cold War would impose an atmosphere bursting with tension on the world film
production arena. The main tense issues that prevailed included but were not limited to: Communist
expansionism, American Imperialism, an arms race including a nuclear menace, the subjugation of
space, and the infamous intelligence and counter–espionage clash. It is important to note that the
skirmishes amongst these main actors– the Unites States and The Soviet Union– was not only in the
domain of defense and economy, but also encompassed ideology and culture. The latter was
especially mirrored in the cinema.
From the nonviolent coexistence to the climax and fall of prevalent democracies, and all that is
within cinema has reflected the societal patterns of major periods in history. Furthermore, the
media's evolvement as an effective propaganda machine used mainly for denunciation purposes
secured the box office a chief function in the Cold War. A multitude of films were introduced with
varying dimensions on the same topic. "The Iron Curtain'(1948) along with "The Invasion of The
Body Snatchers"(1956) and "The Witch Hunt"(1994) were amongst films which proliferated during
the period.

Minority Report And Invasion Of The Body Snatchers
Science fiction is like a prediction of a society's future. Sci–Fi is shown in many different movies,
infomercials, and in many advertisements. But they are advertised in a different way. Mostly in
Technology, but also in medication and cloning. Sci–Fi is a sort of science fiction. The films
Invasion of the Body Snatchers, I am Legend, and Minority report are science fiction, they show
how our society changes over time and how it is a conflict with the society's fear. Invasion of the

about some mysterious pods growing on farms. But these pods were not normal, they were

They use technology and other minds to distribute information throughout the "Washington D.C."
area (Plot Summary). Minority Report is about three humans that can predict when a murder is
going to take place. There three humans are special because as kids, they were in terror of their own
dreams. They dreamed of murders that were going to happen. But the government sees it as a way to
make the community better. So, they brought all three of their special human beings together and
began a company that helps them picture murders before they actually happen. These dreams told
the killer, the victim, and the time the murder would occur but not the location. It would show the
government the items in the location, but not the exact location. The government would go out
looking for this criminal before the crime was committed. Ethical Concern was distributed through
this film because the going to be criminals could have made the choice not to kill the victim. John is
a man whose son was taken while they were at the town pool and his name came up as a murderer.
John stole a precog, the people that have the dreams, and she convinced him into not killing crow.
The precrime business reflected in the Washington D.C. society. The government thought it was
going to help make the world a better place, but a glitch happened during the precogs dreams. These
precogs would vision the murder more than once. But this is not because they want them to put
more investigation into it, it is because the murder that they first visiones of was suppose to happen
and who the murderer is but it never happened that way or by that person. The second vision shows
the same vision but small details are different but it is the same victim, they do not know who the
actual killer is. Precrime was a benefit for Washington's government but in the end it was the total
opposite. Sci–Fi was also shown in I am

Facing Our Fears in Science Fiction Essay
Facing Our Fears in Science Fiction The dead are walking. They lumber and limp, feet scraping
against the asphalt. Suddenly, they lunge and tear down into soft, warm, vulnerable flesh with
startling speed. Not far behind, oozing inside–out hellhounds growl around razor fangs, stalking
with murderous intent. All because of an innocent little airborne chemical weapon...This can't be
happening, this would never happen, right? It may sound far fetched, and it is. These horrifying
creatures grace the screen of current blockbuster hit, Resident Evil 2: Apocalypse. So you're safe.

In these films, along with their numerous brethren, the alien invaders were "often a metaphor for
Communism" (Dirks). The Day the Earth Stood Still was an early warning to the world, and a
commentary on paranoid society when its main character tried to do just that. The alien Klaatu,
along with his robot backup, Gort, lands in Washington D.C. intending to deliver a message to the
world's leaders – Desist with atomic power or be destroyed. However, before he is able to deliver
that message, he is promptly shot – a commentary on society's post–war paranoia and immediate
distrust of the unknown. America's leaders suspect the humanoid Klaatu of being a Communist spy,
Russia won't meet to hear the message unless it takes place on its own soil, and Britain will have
none of that. Ultimately, the alien's attempts to deliver the dire message are futile, with the world's
leaders unable to overcome their pettiness and suspicion to really hear. Unlike films that followed,
The Day the Earth Stood Still was an exception to the rule in that the alien was not an invader, but a
benign message–bearer. Aliens invade in War of the Worlds It seemed that words were not enough,
and so films like The War of the Worlds and Invasion of the Body Snatchers made good on Klaatu's
promise. Moviegoers watched in horror as America was indeed invaded, not by Communists but

How Does Hollywood Reflect American Society
Hollywood is a phenomenon that truly works to express the society of the United States. Through
the study of film, one can see the many ways that Hollywood works to not only echo the sentiments
of the culture but shape the ideas and mindsets of those who watch the films. After 1940, Hollywood
has appeared to reflect American society far more than it has shaped it. The films that appear during
times of war and political strife seem to hit a different note after the United States joined the Second
World War. Suddenly, the messages within the movies were less about how important it was to
support the war cause and more about the ideologies of the war – frequently finding new and
amusing ways to show the bad guy. However, after America won the war and came home, the
messages of the films did not seem ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In the 1960's, America had another war to worry about. However, this war more than any other
echoed the popular sentiment rather than attempted to show America as the good guy. No, these
films were truly as anti–war as the people who demanded them. Stemming from the 1960's and
flowing through into modernity, many filmmakers worked to revise and remake old ideas – often
producing films such as M*A*S*H and Johnny Got His Gun, which "departed from the tradition of
the just American war by representing war as something stupid and inhumane." These films did not
show the glory of war but instead caused the viewer to continue to wonder whether or not something
so senseless could or should be supported. This was because politically, the Vietnam war was
anything but successful – generally, people hated the war and did not think that America belonged in
the area. Because of this, Hollywood did not want to put out films that directly supported the war, as
they would not be successful at the box office. One cannot help but see America pulling away from
its patriotism and belief in the American

Invasion Of The Body Snatchers Essay
The historical significands of the film The Invasion of the Body Snatchers was that fear of
Communism had changed to paranoia of government and corporations. In the 1970s, the public did
not like the direction the "Me" Generation was taking society. In the following Invasion of the Body
Snatchers (1978) film clip, you should note the following 3 things: 1. Pods are being brought into
the school to assimilate the children. Fear and paranoia that the indoctrination started with the adults
and then the assimilated adults did it to the children. 2. In the office, everyone appears to be a 1984
George Orwell type drone. 3. At the end, Donald Sutherland exposes the woman as not being one of
them. Philip Kaufman was asked in an interview why he did the film The Invasion of the Body
Snatcher when he had previously said he would never do a remake. He said, "I though the theme
should be looked at again, because I think we're entering another 'pod' era, a lot like the 50's. In the

However, to do this he must throw his friend 'under the bus'. The 1970s saw the rise of the idea
"Silent Majority". Society was being controlled by a small group of people while the majority sat by
silently. Society was hiding their true feeling about the changes that were going on around them,
even to the point of agreeing just to fit in. "The zombification in the film is 'surely a warning about
conformity and loss of identity in a monolithic society. The monsters are no more than our ordinary,
timid, complacent selves. People 'turn' just by letting go, falling asleep – they can be caught napping
as their freedom ebbs away.'" The film brought out that our ideas and way of living were changing

Classical Gender Representation:
In Classical Hollywood the representation of women is certainly quite clear cut, our main two
definable types being that of the virgin and that of the whore. Our virgin represents the patriarchal
ideals of family within which at the time a woman should represent innocence, purity and certainly
deference to the male. Our whore figure shows contempt for family values through promiscuity or
perceived selfishness. This woman will often be a lot more influential then a virgin figure. Our
whore will inevitably be neutralised during the course of the film often through imprisonment or
death. The classic often revisited scene of a man grasping a woman by the upper arms is a good
visual metaphor for the dominance of man in classical Hollywood. Another good visual metaphor is
that of the male gaze. Very often we will see a point of view shot from the male perspective and we
see that the object of his gaze is a beautifully lit woman. She will not return his gaze as this would
be a show of equality. This representation of gender is consistent through all classical genres for
example we have our Femme Fatale in Noir and in westerns we have literal whores. Westerns also
have what is known as "the tart with a heart" which is a female living by questionable morals but
often for reason of necessity. She will also always be neutralised.

Essay On Sontag
Sontag develops the idea that the hopeful fantasy is that when humans, need to come together to
fight, we will put our differences aside and come together as a human race, instead of different
nations, in order to escape a life of war. During the release of films such as Godzilla, The Day the
Earth Stood Still, THEM!, The Invasion of the Body Snatchers, Earth vs. the Flying Saucers and
The Thing from Another Planet, there were present anxieties about the military's, inefficiency. The
newer generation held onto the fear of becoming like the older generation, whom became the
products of war. Sontag states that the two present anxieties of the generation revolve one of the two
extreme futures; a future with "unremitting banality" or "inconceivable terror" (224). There was a
fear of living in a world of absolute destruction and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It is the recent past that stirs up feelings of anxiety because of the idea that history can repeat itself
once more. There is a fascination and a fear of invasion surrounding science–fiction film because
alien invasion parallels invasion of foreigners into one's own country. Many films represent the main
characters as those who fight off these foreigners. There is a large focus on the characterization
between the military man versus the the science man. In US films, such as The Thing from Another
Planet, the military is displayed to have immense military power that can fight off aliens. The
military men at the base defeated the alien using electricity while the scientist failed to communicate
and subdue the alien. Here the hopeful fantasy is that the human military power will be enough to
destroy what drops from the sky and that the human race will be saved. Foreign movies such as
Japan's Godzilla, portrays the military to be inefficient. This is a

The Content Of The Cult Film They Live
A film, generally speaking is digested on a surface level as a piece of entertainment and some
elements can pass the viewers by. However films are cemented in the time and place they were
made and the filmmakers unique self–expression is presented in an artistic form to fully give their
work depth. Typically, feature films are narrative driven and focus on a central set of characters and
their trials and tribulations. However, the film can mean something deeper when fully delving into
the content of the work, whether it is cultural, political or ideological in its message. These elements
presented give the work depth thus allowing deeper discussions and analysis of a work that may
seem simple on a surface level. Student filmmakers have always strived to implement these points in
their work. With the aim of improving their practice, it is considered a necessity to include these
elements in order to fully dissect the elements of specific works to understand the method in which
these messages are implemented. In this assignment, I will discuss the content of the cult film They
Live (They Live, 1988) so I can fully grasp the symptomatic and ideological elements behind the
film and how it has inspired other artists. John Carpenters career flourished with the release of
Halloween (Halloween, 1978). Throughout the 1980's he made a name for himself within the horror
and science fiction genre with films such as The Fog (The Fog, 1980), The Thing (The Thing, 1982)

The Body Snatchers: A Short Story
The air is filled with the sounds of ringing bells as the local choir from the Salvation Army sings a
joyous song in glorious praise to the Lord. Their voices reaching out, hoping to spread the message
that everyone can be saved, born again if they would only turn to Jesus. However, most of the
people are hurrying by to escape the threat of the oncoming rain, paying little or no attention to the
terms the faithful choir sang out. But the chorus wasn't disturbed by the people's lack of response.
Instead, they sang out all the more with great spirit and bold loudness as if trying to wake the

Science-Fiction Films During The 1950's
The science–fiction film genre serves as an excellent medium for examining shifting power
structures, social paranoia and Cold War politics during the 1950s. A number of films released
during this period, including: Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1956), The Day the Earth Stood Still
(1951), Them (1954) and Attack of the 50ft Woman (1958), are particularly symptomatic of the
social and political atmosphere of the time. These films navigate not only narrative based issues
such as the threat of aliens and science experiments gone wrong; but also wider issues of the time,
such as the Cold War, changes in the US film industry, urbanisation, politics, the growing power of
women and most significantly, social concern about nuclear energy.
Before analysing individual science–fiction films from the 1950s, it is important to gain a clear
understanding of the social, cultural and political background against which these films were set.
Paranoia is a term frequently used to describe an acute, anxiety dominated medical condition
(Paranoia, 2009), however in the context of 1950's America, this term can be used more accurately
to describe the general, delusionary mood of the nation. The first important event that influenced a
paranoiac filmmaking atmosphere was the Cold War. As opposed to the 'hot war' (WWII) that
involved active military hostilities, the Cold War was based on heightened tension and suspicions
between Western Bloc (USA) powers and Eastern Bloc (Soviet Union) powers (The

told the people that he would capture the shark, but instead of $3000 he wanted $10,000. As he goes
on the journey with the chief and the ichotnyist, he tells them about the traumatic encounter with a
great white shark. To summarize, Quint talks the shark attack that followed after the sinking of the
U.S.S Indianapolis by a Japanese submarine. He explains the sharks characteristics to the chief,
"he's got lifeless eyes, black eyes, like a doll's eye. When he comes at 'ya, doesn't seem to be livin".

I Am Legend, Minority Report
In today's society, we continually live in fear that something catastrophic is waiting right around the
corner. The genre of science fiction has made that fear even more prominent in today's society with
a plethora of movies showing a dystopian world. Popular movies like The Hunger Games bring
viewers into a world where two people every year must fight to death to show their superiority and
to earn their freedom much like roman times in the coliseum. Hunger Games isn't the first movie to
play on this fear though. I Am Legend, Minority Report, and Invasion of the Body Snatchers are
movies specifically created to bring fear and discontentment to the human mind by feeding the fear
of the unknown. The 2007 movie I Am Legend is the story of a man named Robert Neville who was
thought to be the last human earth due to a viral outbreak. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

The War Against The Soviet War
Throughout the 1940s and 1960s the United States engaged in a Cold War against the USSR, with
both sides having access to nuclear weapons escalating any further would mean mutually assured
destruction; since neither nation could use traditional weapons instead they engaged in an
ideological war. During this time America employed many different tactics to both vilify
communism and present itself as the antithesis of everything it stood for, they fought by proxy with
propaganda to promote fear and mistrust. This psychological warfare would lead to significant
changes in religion, as America presented itself as a God fearing nation to combat the USSR's status
as atheist, society, with American culture being warped to display its stance against communism and
inspire a sense of fear towards it from the populace, and technology as both America and the USSR
rushed to be the first to reach milestones in an attempt to ultimately prove their own ascendancy. In
an effort to appear as anticommunist as possible the nature of America's views on religion vastly
changed; patriotism would become synonymous with Christianity. President Eisenhower urged
people to attend church claiming that it was their patriotic duty and, despite not having joined a
church in any official capacity until the year 1953, decidedly refereed to himself as "the most deeply
religious man I know". Furthermore, courts would also begin ruling in favor of certain religious
practices; reading the bible, prayer, and

Comparison Of Invasion Of The Body Snatchers
During the second Red Scare in the late 1940's and early 1950's, American's were fearful that
communism would permeate throughout their country and eventually rule their governments and
entire lives. When Invasion of the Body Snatchers was directed by Don Siegal in 1956, he wanted to
produce a film that creatively captured the fear of McCarthyism. The movie was inspired by the
novel written by Jack Finney in 1954, which also aimed to depict what fears society had in the 50s.
The film was recreated three more times, each with an original spin on the first movie and novel, but
still effectively capturing the attention of the audience. The primary hope was of increasing
awareness over the fear of Communism and losing one's personal autonomy to Communism while
each adaptation reflects the struggles and mindset during the time period that it was set in. Each of
these films and novel, despite their numerous differences, reflect the period that they were created in
through themes of losing one's individuality, gender roles, and paranoia. The novel that inspired the
production of Invasion of the Body Snatchers was written in 1954 by Jack Finney titled The Body
Snatchers. Finney used this novel to convey the fact that individuality is beneficial to humanity
because if everyone is the same then there is a universal loss of identity (Sloan 183). Finney's novel
explored the loss of individuality through the main characters, Miles and Becky, and the fears that
humanity had in the

Invasion Of The Body Snatchers Analysis
Invasion of the Body Snatchers was made during the Red Scare era where everyone in the United
States was afraid of communism spreading across the country. This film is uniquely demonstrating
how fast something can spread, especially when you let your guard down like they did when they
fell asleep in the movie. The use of the pod in my opinion was to represent how easy it was to plant
an idea in someone's mind. One thing about communism is it grew rapidly kind like how the pods
grew in the movie. It didn't matter what the doc did or where they went someone in the movie
always had a pod right around the corner for when they would go to sleep. That is how fast
communism spread when you least expected it there were people among us ready to change

Rough Draft: Jack Finney Jack Finney was a famous American author, who was best known for his
science–fiction and thriller works. He wrote more than fifty short stories and many novels. His two
most popular works are Time and Again and The Body Snatchers. He has made multiple
accomplishments through his remarkable pieces of writing. Jack was born on October 2, 1911 in
Milwaukee, Wisconsin. His birth name was John Finney, but was changed to Walter Braden Finney
after his father died when he was only three. Although his name was changed in honor of his father,
the nickname of 'Jack' stuck and he was referred to as Jack for the rest of his life. He spent most of

Sigmund Freud's The Uncanny
In "The Uncanny" Sigmund Freud describes the uncanny, explaining it as "that class of frightening
which leads back to what is old and long familiar" (825) In order to adequately describe exactly how
something which is old and long familiar becomes frightening he uses the German word
"Heimlich", which essentially means homelike. In direct contrast with Heimlich, exists the word
unheimlich, which can be understood as something that is the opposite of homelike. Freud describes
unheimlich as something which should have remained secret but has come to light. While there are a
great many things that are able to make us feel this uncanny feeling, according to Freud they are all

The most chilling part of this film existed surely in the 1950s and today. Today it is the timelessness
of it that is uncanny, that eventually the pods got almost everyone. It didn't matter who you were or
what kind of person you are, this deeply repressed fear that we could all become mindless
automatons exists, and seeing it represented is deeply disturbing. The uncanny effect exists in
several places in this film; the uncanny feeling from seeing someone who looks exactly like you
emerge from a pod, the uncanny feeling of knowing something about someone you know is off but
you just can't seem to put your finger on it, and when the whole town is essentially comprised of
pod people that seem so close to the real thing it is nearly impossible to detect. This film has so
many layers of uncanny, at points it is almost difficult to put your finger on exactly what it is that is
creating the feeling in the first place. This film becomes a representation of our culturally repressed
fears, the uncanny feeling from not knowing whether something is a human or an automaton, and

Perception of Time and Space in 2001: The Space Odyssey and Star Wars VI
Though 2001: The Space Odyssey and Star Wars VI: Return of the Jedi are both set in space,
Kubrick and Lucas provide their own distinct measures to portray their versions of outer space.
Kubrick leaves his viewers with an anxious and unsettling perception of what is it to be in outer
space while Lucas presents space as a familiar and appealing extension of Earth.
Star Wars VI: The Return of the Jedi is a journey of familiarity and comfort for most viewers. Lucas
parallels different settings in the film with well–known places on Earth. The audience can detect
similarities between outer space and Earth within the different landscapes Lucas shows. For
example, the home of Jabba the Hutt ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Seeing areas in space that parallel those on Earth initiates a feeling of comfort and safety in the
audience, allowing them to view space as an extension of home rather than something eclectic and
foreign. Lucas makes space seem inviting by presenting space and time in outer space to be similar
to space and time on Earth. The events are placed in chronological order and due to this the movie
feels like it's in "real time", unlike Kubrick's 2001: The Space Odyssey.
Kubrick's distinctive portrayal of space is completely divergent from what Earth has to offer. Space
is unknown to us, just like the monolith. Kubrick uses strategic camera positioning, angles and
movement to display the distortion of space. The audience cannot hold onto a sense of what is in
front of us or behind us because those concepts do not exist in space according to Kubrick. We see
the presentation of twisted perspective when Kubrick provides insight to the maintenance of the
spaceship. One man was standing, in what appears to be, upright while another was standing
towards us, off the screen and perpendicular to the other astronaut. The scene itself is difficult to
explain because of the fact

Invasion of the Body Snatchers Essay examples
In the 1956 film "Invasion of the Body Snatchers", the birth of something horrifying takes place in

It wasn't until he began to see for himself the body casts of his friends and loved ones in
transformation that he began to believe it himself. At first the pod developed itself inside of a
greenhouse, it then proceed to create human figures that looked exactly as the people of the town.
Once the "look alike" has formed completely, the real human that the pod would take over must fall

movement, emotion, and speech. The pod is just a body that needs to survive and will do whatever it

The Soviet Union And The United States
Due to the onset of the Cold War and the early 1960s, the popular and political climate in the United
States changed. The relationship between the Soviet Union and the United States was directed by
ideological, political and technological factors. The rivalry between the two powers rooted from
their contrasting ideological principles since the United States was a democratic republic where the
people believed that every citizen had equal representation in the government and the Soviet Union
was a communist nation. The US embodied the principles of a democratic nation believing in the
ideals of "life, liberty and pursuit of happiness" as well as having an economy that was based on
capitalism. In contrast to the ideology of the US, the Soviet Union fell under communist rule during
the Russian Revolution of 1917, which was based on the idea that all assets should be owned by the
government and then divided among the citizens of the nation. The Soviet Union took communism a
step further as the many of the leaders were totalitarian during the 20th century, meaning that "all
power was in the hands of the ruler". In 1946, Churchill declared the separation between the east
and west by saying that an iron curtain had descended through the middle of Europe (Churchill
Delivers Iron Curtain Speech 1). Even though the Soviets and the US fought together in WWII, the
eastern communistic ideology had clashed with western democratic principles. Furthermore, the two
powers were in a nuclear

1950s Horror Films
Horror films in the 1950s were very different from those in modern times, as 1960's Psycho is often
credited as the father of modern horror film. 50s horror films would often fit into the science fiction
or thriller genres today. The 50s were known as the "Monster Movie decade", as films often used
aliens and monsters to reflect communism or fascism, fears reminiscent of the era (American Movie
Classics Company LLC, 2017). The Creature from the Black Lagoon (1954) was released in 3–D
and used a foam and latex suit to create one of film's most famous monsters– Gill–Man (see image

The Day The Earth Stood Still And Close Encounters Of The...
When you first mention science fiction people's thoughts most likely go to books and films like Star
Wars, Hunger Games, I, Robot, and Avatar, stories we don't always think of as "educational". The
future, aliens, space adventures, human–like robots, etc. we tend to think of these as silly ideas and
fantasies. But, the world of science fiction teaches us a lot about human nature; our flaws, pitfalls,
and irrationalities.
The flaws of our nature are demonstrated in A.I. a film based off the Supertoys stories. In this series

artificial intelligence human robot does no wrong, loves unconditionally and always listens to their

The Day the Earth Stood Still and Close Encounters of the Third Kind are such stories. In these
stories shows our human nature in the fact of we are afraid of the unknown. For example, in The
Day the Earth Stood Still we're afraid of the alien and threaten him with military forces throughout
the whole rest of the film. Even when we discover he is only here to warn and save us. Close
Encounters of the Third Kind is different in the fact that we do not threaten the alien visitors we
wonder and welcome them if we wish. It was frightening to the characters but was the right thing to
do in the situation. The irrationality in this film is shown not by the military forces but by the way
Ronnie is unsupportive of Roy. Despites the fact it would be difficult to see your spouse obsessed
with one thing and distant to your family, she should've realized, stuck with him and supported him
through the mess. Many people are like that in our society; only around for the good times, but when
the going gets though they bail on those around. That to me is irrational. If you're not willing to stick
with someone in the good and the bad, then why be part of their lives?
In essence, science fiction is not just fun and games of aliens, robots and the unknown, it's a teacher.
This genre educates and warns us of our destructive tendency. Science fiction teaches us about
human nature; our flaws, pitfalls, and

brought in by the highway patrol. He is raving about an unknown danger and claims he is not crazy.

Invasion of the body snatchers
The movie "Invasion of the body snatchers" was released in 1956. During this era, the American
dream was real, and it was living in the suburbs with a wife and children. It is an era where
everybody fit into the society. Nonetheless, the genuine concerns were the communism system of
administration that was synonymous with the Soviets. Simultaneously, McCarthyism took shape in
the United States. It was started by the then the United States Senator Joe McCarthy and gripped
fear across the country. He highlighted how people in America could be communist sympathizers,
spies or communist themselves. Through scrutiny of the film, many people comprehend the theme
differently. Communism, McCarthyism and the key ideas of thinking and conformity are all
speculated, but they come together in a manner that disproves the ideologies of the 1950s.
Doctor Miles Bennell is seen sitting in a mental asylum, where he is angrily talking about the
supposed alien invasion that that befallen the small town of Santa Maria. He is even pleading with

What Does It Mean To Say That Art Is A Lie
Pablo Picasso once said "Art is a lie that brings us closer to the truth". From this statement a lot can
be interpreted leading to different ideas and I think most prominent is the relationship between art,
the truth and lies. Pablo Picasso makes two assumptions in his assertion, the first concerning the first
section which addresses the fact that art is a lie. The second assumption is made whereby art is given
a purpose–" brings us closer to the truth" which creates a paradox that truth can develop and exist in
a lie. Furthermore his statement of the two contradictory suggestions leads us to understand that art
is a representation of the truth or truths and reality which are perceived by humans as lies. Art is a
wide and broad Area of Knowledge that incorporates a lot of art forms and a form that has
dominated our modern times is film. Taking this into account, Picasso's statement will be analyzed
in relation to film on the basis of two contradictory claims on art, lies and truth. ... Show more

Art's definition is very controversial and many different thoughts can come up. This brings up a
knowledge question Is it possible to define what art is completely? The controversy rises when
discussing what exactly does Picasso mean by art, is it just in paintings and visual expression or
rather more deeper and bigger context. Leading to another question on the context of his statement.
To what extent does context affect our understanding of Knowledge? A very good example that
reinforces this is "The Matrix", which is a well known movie series that greatly deals with the idea
of perception vs reality whereby people what people perceive to be the truth and reality is really just
an illusion and deception. Referring to a quote from the film "What is real? How do you define

A Short Story : The Purpose Of A Horror Story
The purpose of a horror story is to entertain and scare the reader into believing that fictional stories
could happen in real life. The ending to a horror story can either make the story or break the story,
leaving the author with the task of creating an ending as horrifying as the story that was just read.
There are many different ways an author can craft an ending to their horror story in order to
accentuate the works' horrific effects. The different endings are shown throughout four different
authors and five different works. Different themes, motifs, and symbols have all been used in order
to bring horrific works to life for the readers, but their effects all come together to induce fear and
strengthen the endings of the stories, leaving readers and viewers with frightening images of the fate
that found the main characters. The different works use themes of unavoidable fate, hopelessness,
and ambiguity to strengthen the horrific effects in the endings of their stories. In Daphne du
Maurier's, "Don't Look Now," the ending raises the hopes of the audience that there will be a happy
ending for John and his family, only to have it taken away in a cruel twist of fate. The short story is
centered around John and Laura, a couple who is on holiday after the devastation of losing their
daughter to a deadly bout of meningitis. After meeting twins in Venice who claim to be psychic,
Laura is ecstatic by their claims that the blind twin could see their late daughter happily between

Invasion Of The Body Snatchers

  • 1. Invasion Of The Body Snatchers Savannah Dye Short Essay #3 October 18, 2016 Invasion of the Marriage Police Invasion of the Body Snatchers is widely dubbed an anti–Communist film by those who have seen it. The plot of the movie is that unfamiliar, extraterrestrial "body snatchers" are taking over the bodies of people in a small town in California while they sleep, and replacing them with clones that lack emotion. For the most part, a general consensus has been reached that the mass hysteria about the "pod people" in the film is reflective of the red–scare consumed society of the 1950's. However, the article that I read that was written in response to this film suggests that it is instead a cynical representation of post–WWII, traditional American domesticity. The article that I read that was pertaining to Don Siegel's 1956 adaptation of Invasion of the Body Snatchers is called "Lovelier the Second Time Around: Divorce, Desire, and Gothic Domesticity in Invasion of the Body Snatchers", written by Jennifer L. Jenkins. Jenkins suggests that rather than being a science fiction film that has an anti–Communism message, Invasion of the Body Snatchers is actually a Gothic narrative that presents domesticity and marriage in general as a crippling institution. The 20–page article offers up many examples throughout the film that reinforce the idea that the transformed "pod people" represent the traditional, domesticated individuals while those who remain in their authentic state represent non–conforming ... • 2. The Red Scare: The First Major Anti-Communist Movement Throughout the 1950s, society was going through a period of post was confusion. After the end of World War, I, the first major Anti–Communist movement began in the United States, this was widely known as The Red Scare. The Red Scare was the growing fear of Communism in America. Being a Communist became illegal in the U.S. due to the fact that the Communist party was a radical movement that promoted rebellion and violence. The fear created by the development of the Soviet Union after World War I, and the rise to power of the Soviet Union after World War II caused widespread fear among many. Americans were encouraged to keep an eye on their friends and neighbors to ensure that they were not Communists or Soviet spies passing secrets to the Communists. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Invasion Of The Body Snatchers The film begins with Dr. Miles Bennell telling the doctors at a mental hospital what had occurred over a period of one week. On his way home to Santa Mira from a medical conference, Miles almost hits Jimmy Grimaldi with his car, and after talking to his grandmother, he learns that her husband lost interest in maintaining the vegetable stand. When he arrives to his office, he learns that Wilma believes someone is impersonating her uncle Ira, and Jimmy comes in claiming someone is impersonating his mother. After making a house call, Miles determines that Uncle Ira is not an imposter, and he refers Wilma to a psychologist, Dr. Kauffman. While on a dinner date with Becky, Miles gets an emergency phone call and rushes to Jack and Teddy's home. There ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... After Miles realizes that Becky has been transformed, he calls her "an inhuman enemy bent on my destruction". This statement can also refer to communism. Many people believed that communists were an enemy with the goal of destroying democracy and the life of Americans and their allies. The end of the flashback plays the largest role in playing into the fears of the American people because Miles stares at the camera screaming hysterically "they're here already! You're next!" By using the symbolism of the body snatchers, these statements exaggerate the fears that communists are in the United States, and if people are not careful, they will be next to fall under the communist invasion. Also, by using the vague term of "they're" the writers allow the watchers to fill it in with anything they fear. Because communists were a primary fear of people in the time, people could easily replace "they're" with communists. By using the symbolism of the body snatchers and the diction, the film plays into the political climate of fearing for the invasion of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Body Snatchers Allegory The Invasion of the Body Snatchers, directed by Don Siegel, utilized action and a flashback sequence. At the beginning of the movie, the audience members see a frantic man in a doctor's office saying that he is sane and tells his accounts of the body–snatchers. The screen goes blurry, which indicates that there is a flashback/story being told. The flashbacks worked in this film because they helped establish that the story occurred in the past and it's from the main character's–Dr. Miles–point of view. There are many arguments whether Invasion of the Body Snatcher is an allegory to the Communist Movement. Jeff Saporito from ScreenPrism takes a closer look at the film and how it relates to communism. He states that there were themes of hysteria ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Them ! Movie Analysis As the final shots of the second World War were dealt, the first shots of the Cold War were fired. After World War II, America was prosperous. They had not experienced a significant postwar recession, nor were the masses unemployed. The United States had experienced extraordinary economic growth in the years following the war.Despite the prosperity and growth experienced that succeeded the war, the fear of Communism plagued the minds of Americans. Americans became increasingly worried about the spread of Communism, and the threat of Communism destroying the lives and values of the American people. They saw it as a threat to Democracy itself, and the fear, the paranoia experienced by the Americans was expressed in pop culture. Pop culture after ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The mere thought of a nuclear event or a nuclear attack on the united States was enough to scare the entire country, but mutants and strange creatures as a result of it was over the edge. It was not much a fear of the monsters themselves and their grotesque and gigantic appearances, but what they represented in the films. Take the film "Them!" for example. Ants exposed to radiations as a result of nuclear testing, has turned them into gigantic, mutated ants that are terrorizing the people of New Mexico. The giant mutant ants are used in the film to not only show the dangers of nuclear war, but to portray the soviets in a new way. In the film, Dr.Medford refers to ants in general as " savage, ruthless, and courageous fighters". By labeling the ants as savage and almost barbaric creatures, the same could be said about the Soviets at the time. The Soviets were seen as hard, and crude like the ants in the film, who attacked and killed innocent people.By looking at the poster for the film, we can see the correlation between ants and Communists. The poster features a frightened women in the jaws of a mutant ant screaming " kill one and two more take its place!". Both the giant ants and the soviets were seen to operate as a hydra. It didn't matter if you killed one breast or one communist, because when one dies two more will replace it. The Soviets, like the ants, had strength in numbers, a greater population that the Americans. At the end of the film "Them!" they find the ant's den and throw gas in the hole and attempt to destroy and kill all the ants living in the den. When they jump down into the cavern, they have discovered that two queen ants have escaped, and traveled to California to create a new colony. Again, this could be characterized similarly to the theme of the underground mentioned above, but it goes somewhat deeper than that. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. Essay Classical and Post-Classical Hollywood Cinema Classical and Post–Classical Hollywood Cinema INTRODUCTION During the course of this essay it is my intention to discuss the differences between Classical Hollywood and post–Classical Hollywood. Although these terms refer to theoretical movements of which they are not definitive it is my goal to show that they are applicable in a broad way to a cinema tradition that dominated Hollywood production between 1916 and 1960 and which also pervaded Western Mainstream Cinema (Classical Hollywood or Classic Narrative Cinema) and to the movement and changes that came about following this time period (Post–Classical or New Hollywood). I intend to do this by first analysing and defining aspects of Classical Hollywood and having done that, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... We have a white male heterosexual protagonist. Also a structure of order/disorder/order restored is one of the most fundamental. This structure is will proceed in a linear trajectory towards a high level of closure or resolution. Every question which is raised during the film must be answered. Within our linear trajectory we have a cause and effect pattern which means we will watch an action in one scene and proceed to see its effect or re–action on the following scene. In TOUCH OF EVIL (Orson Welles, USA, 1958) we open with a honeymooning couple. Within moments there is an explosion and disorder is created almost instantly. Our central protagonist, in this case Charlton Heston, combats this disorder for the duration until he eventually finishes back in the arms of his wife. This example represents what David Bordwell (Narration of the fiction film, Madison: University of Wisconsin press, 1985) means when he says "usually the classical syuzhet presents a double causal structure"2. Two plot lines, one which involves a heterosexual romance and another which causes an external struggle (usually for the man and if for the woman inevitably solved by the man). Classical Gender Representation: In Classical Hollywood the representation of women is certainly quite clear cut, our main two definable types being that of the virgin and that of the whore. Our virgin represents the patriarchal ideals of family within which at the time a woman should represent ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

According to a psychological interpretation of the film by Blatty and Friedkin, Regan's parents are divorced, she is jealous of Burke, she's often rejected by her dad (clover, 1992:71) and that the relationship with her mother was fine and great before that. With that being said, Regan's relationship with her mother is why she was possessed. • 8. Invasion Of The Body Snatchers Essay Don Seigel's 1956 film "Invasion of the Body Snatchers" shook many viewers with its brutal imagery of an invasion, a take over, that was almost impossible to differentiate from the normal behavior of society at that time. Neighbors would be completely normal one day, go to sleep, and wake up where "everything else is the same, but not the feeling" that those close to them had come to recognize. Wilma, a desperately worried niece of a recently 'Snatched' citizen, can feel the difference all too well in her family members. The film was able to terrorize the hearts of so many watchers due to its ability to hit so close to the situation many of them were experiencing at that time. The 1950's were rife with social and political changes, from changes in rights to changes in the political ring of the world. Communism, for example, seemed to be invading the minds of friends and neighbors alike all across the country from the views of American citizens. In fact, it was these bonds of ... Or at least their death would result in a huge legal battle that would probably damage that community for years to come. No one had that same protection in the 1950's. • 9. The Cold War Between East And West From The End Of The... From 1948 to 1991 countless anti–communist films were made, dominating the stage of transnational politics and geostrategic affairs between East and West from the beginning to the end of the USSR. The Cold War would impose an atmosphere bursting with tension on the world film production arena. The main tense issues that prevailed included but were not limited to: Communist expansionism, American Imperialism, an arms race including a nuclear menace, the subjugation of space, and the infamous intelligence and counter–espionage clash. It is important to note that the skirmishes amongst these main actors– the Unites States and The Soviet Union– was not only in the domain of defense and economy, but also encompassed ideology and culture. The latter was especially mirrored in the cinema. From the nonviolent coexistence to the climax and fall of prevalent democracies, and all that is within cinema has reflected the societal patterns of major periods in history. Furthermore, the media's evolvement as an effective propaganda machine used mainly for denunciation purposes secured the box office a chief function in the Cold War. A multitude of films were introduced with varying dimensions on the same topic. "The Iron Curtain'(1948) along with "The Invasion of The Body Snatchers"(1956) and "The Witch Hunt"(1994) were amongst films which proliferated during the period. They dreamed of murders that were going to happen. But the government sees it as a way to make the community better. So, they brought all three of their special human beings together and began a company that helps them picture murders before they actually happen. These dreams told the killer, the victim, and the time the murder would occur but not the location. It would show the government the items in the location, but not the exact location. The government would go out looking for this criminal before the crime was committed. The government thought it was going to help make the world a better place, but a glitch happened during the precogs dreams. These precogs would vision the murder more than once. In these films, along with their numerous brethren, the alien invaders were "often a metaphor for Communism" (Dirks). The Day the Earth Stood Still was an early warning to the world, and a commentary on paranoid society when its main character tried to do just that. The alien Klaatu, along with his robot backup, Gort, lands in Washington D.C. intending to deliver a message to the world's leaders – Desist with atomic power or be destroyed. However, before he is able to deliver that message, he is promptly shot – a commentary on society's post–war paranoia and immediate distrust of the unknown. America's leaders suspect the humanoid Klaatu of being a Communist spy, Russia won't meet to hear the message unless it takes place on its own soil, and Britain will have none of that. Ultimately, the alien's attempts to deliver the dire message are futile, with the world's leaders unable to overcome their pettiness and suspicion to really hear. Unlike films that followed, The Day the Earth Stood Still was an exception to the rule in that the alien was not an invader, but a benign message–bearer. • 12. How Does Hollywood Reflect American Society Hollywood is a phenomenon that truly works to express the society of the United States. Through the study of film, one can see the many ways that Hollywood works to not only echo the sentiments of the culture but shape the ideas and mindsets of those who watch the films. After 1940, Hollywood has appeared to reflect American society far more than it has shaped it. The films that appear during times of war and political strife seem to hit a different note after the United States joined the Second World War. Suddenly, the messages within the movies were less about how important it was to support the war cause and more about the ideologies of the war – frequently finding new and amusing ways to show the bad guy. However, after America won the war and came home, the messages of the films did not seem ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In the 1960's, America had another war to worry about. However, this war more than any other echoed the popular sentiment rather than attempted to show America as the good guy. No, these films were truly as anti–war as the people who demanded them. Stemming from the 1960's and flowing through into modernity, many filmmakers worked to revise and remake old ideas – often producing films such as M*A*S*H and Johnny Got His Gun, which "departed from the tradition of the just American war by representing war as something stupid and inhumane." These films did not show the glory of war but instead caused the viewer to continue to wonder whether or not something so senseless could or should be supported. This was because politically, the Vietnam war was anything but successful – generally, people hated the war and did not think that America belonged in the area. Because of this, Hollywood did not want to put out films that directly supported the war, as they would not be successful at the box office. Invasion Of The Body Snatchers Essay The historical significands of the film The Invasion of the Body Snatchers was that fear of Communism had changed to paranoia of government and corporations. In the 1970s, the public did not like the direction the "Me" Generation was taking society. In the following Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978) film clip, you should note the following 3 things: 1. Pods are being brought into the school to assimilate the children. Fear and paranoia that the indoctrination started with the adults and then the assimilated adults did it to the children. 2. In the office, everyone appears to be a 1984 George Orwell type drone. 3. At the end, Donald Sutherland exposes the woman as not being one of them. Philip Kaufman was asked in an interview why he did the film The Invasion of the Body Snatcher when he had previously said he would never do a remake. Society was hiding their true feeling about the changes that were going on around them, even to the point of agreeing just to fit in. "The zombification in the film is 'surely a warning about conformity and loss of identity in a monolithic society. The monsters are no more than our ordinary, timid, complacent selves. Classical Gender Representation: In Classical Hollywood the representation of women is certainly quite clear cut, our main two definable types being that of the virgin and that of the whore. Our virgin represents the patriarchal ideals of family within which at the time a woman should represent innocence, purity and certainly deference to the male. Our whore figure shows contempt for family values through promiscuity or perceived selfishness. This woman will often be a lot more influential then a virgin figure. Our whore will inevitably be neutralised during the course of the film often through imprisonment or death. The classic often revisited scene of a man grasping a woman by the upper arms is a good visual metaphor for the dominance of man in classical Hollywood. Another good visual metaphor is that of the male gaze. Very often we will see a point of view shot from the male perspective and we see that the object of his gaze is a beautifully lit woman. She will not return his gaze as this would

Essay On Sontag Sontag develops the idea that the hopeful fantasy is that when humans, need to come together to fight, we will put our differences aside and come together as a human race, instead of different nations, in order to escape a life of war. During the release of films such as Godzilla, The Day the Earth Stood Still, THEM!, The Invasion of the Body Snatchers, Earth vs. the Flying Saucers and The Thing from Another Planet, there were present anxieties about the military's, inefficiency. The newer generation held onto the fear of becoming like the older generation, whom became the products of war. It is the recent past that stirs up feelings of anxiety because of the idea that history can repeat itself once more. There is a fascination and a fear of invasion surrounding science–fiction film because alien invasion parallels invasion of foreigners into one's own country. Many films represent the main characters as those who fight off these foreigners. There is a large focus on the characterization between the military man versus the the science man. In US films, such as The Thing from Another Planet, the military is displayed to have immense military power that can fight off aliens. The military men at the base defeated the alien using electricity while the scientist failed to communicate and subdue the alien. Here the hopeful fantasy is that the human military power will be enough to destroy what drops from the sky and that the human race will be saved. • 17. The Content Of The Cult Film They Live A film, generally speaking is digested on a surface level as a piece of entertainment and some elements can pass the viewers by. However films are cemented in the time and place they were made and the filmmakers unique self–expression is presented in an artistic form to fully give their work depth. Typically, feature films are narrative driven and focus on a central set of characters and their trials and tribulations. However, the film can mean something deeper when fully delving into the content of the work, whether it is cultural, political or ideological in its message. These elements presented give the work depth thus allowing deeper discussions and analysis of a work that may seem simple on a surface level. Student filmmakers have always strived to implement these points in their work. With the aim of improving their practice, it is considered a necessity to include these elements in order to fully dissect the elements of specific works to understand the method in which these messages are implemented. In this assignment, I will discuss the content of the cult film They Live (They Live, 1988) so I can fully grasp the symptomatic and ideological elements behind the film and how it has inspired other artists. • 20. Science-Fiction Films During The 1950's The science–fiction film genre serves as an excellent medium for examining shifting power structures, social paranoia and Cold War politics during the 1950s. A number of films released during this period, including: Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1956), The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951), Them (1954) and Attack of the 50ft Woman (1958), are particularly symptomatic of the social and political atmosphere of the time. These films navigate not only narrative based issues such as the threat of aliens and science experiments gone wrong; but also wider issues of the time, such as the Cold War, changes in the US film industry, urbanisation, politics, the growing power of women and most significantly, social concern about nuclear energy. Before analysing individual science–fiction films from the 1950s, it is important to gain a clear understanding of the social, cultural and political background against which these films were set. Paranoia is a term frequently used to describe an acute, anxiety dominated medical condition (Paranoia, 2009), however in the context of 1950's America, this term can be used more accurately to describe the general, delusionary mood of the nation. The first important event that influenced a paranoiac filmmaking atmosphere was the Cold War. As opposed to the 'hot war' (WWII) that involved active military hostilities, the Cold War was based on heightened tension and suspicions between Western Bloc (USA) powers and Eastern Bloc (Soviet Union) powers (The ... The War Against The Soviet War Throughout the 1940s and 1960s the United States engaged in a Cold War against the USSR, with both sides having access to nuclear weapons escalating any further would mean mutually assured destruction; since neither nation could use traditional weapons instead they engaged in an ideological war. During this time America employed many different tactics to both vilify communism and present itself as the antithesis of everything it stood for, they fought by proxy with propaganda to promote fear and mistrust. This psychological warfare would lead to significant changes in religion, as America presented itself as a God fearing nation to combat the USSR's status as atheist, society, with American culture being warped to display its stance against communism and inspire a sense of fear towards it from the populace, and technology as both America and the USSR rushed to be the first to reach milestones in an attempt to ultimately prove their own ascendancy. In an effort to appear as anticommunist as possible the nature of America's views on religion vastly changed; patriotism would become synonymous with Christianity. President Eisenhower urged people to attend church claiming that it was their patriotic duty and, despite not having joined a church in any official capacity until the year 1953, decidedly refereed to himself as "the most deeply religious man I know". When Invasion of the Body Snatchers was directed by Don Siegal in 1956, he wanted to produce a film that creatively captured the fear of McCarthyism. The movie was inspired by the novel written by Jack Finney in 1954, which also aimed to depict what fears society had in the 50s. The film was recreated three more times, each with an original spin on the first movie and novel, but still effectively capturing the attention of the audience. The primary hope was of increasing awareness over the fear of Communism and losing one's personal autonomy to Communism while each adaptation reflects the struggles and mindset during the time period that it was set in. Each of these films and novel, despite their numerous differences, reflect the period that they were created in through themes of losing one's individuality, gender roles, and paranoia. The novel that inspired the production of Invasion of the Body Snatchers was written in 1954 by Jack Finney titled The Body Snatchers. Finney used this novel to convey the fact that individuality is beneficial to humanity because if everyone is the same then there is a universal loss of identity (Sloan 183). The relationship between the Soviet Union and the United States was directed by ideological, political and technological factors. The rivalry between the two powers rooted from their contrasting ideological principles since the United States was a democratic republic where the people believed that every citizen had equal representation in the government and the Soviet Union was a communist nation. The US embodied the principles of a democratic nation believing in the ideals of "life, liberty and pursuit of happiness" as well as having an economy that was based on capitalism. In contrast to the ideology of the US, the Soviet Union fell under communist rule during the Russian Revolution of 1917, which was based on the idea that all assets should be owned by the government and then divided among the citizens of the nation. The Soviet Union took communism a step further as the many of the leaders were totalitarian during the 20th century, meaning that "all power was in the hands of the ruler". In 1946, Churchill declared the separation between the east and west by saying that an iron curtain had descended through the middle of Europe (Churchill Delivers Iron Curtain Speech 1).
