OpenStreetMap (OSM) is a collaborative project that allows volunteers to collect and share geographic map data. It was created in 2004 by Steve Coast in response to restrictions on use and availability of map information from other sources. OSM has grown significantly since with over 2 million registered users contributing location data through manual surveys, GPS devices, aerial photography and other free sources. Major companies like Foursquare, Craigslist, Apple and TomTom now utilize OSM's openly licensed map data.
