Safety Code of Practice (SCoP) • Much of the following information/presentation is summarised from the SCoP • SCoP produced to comply with Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 • Mandatory to all staff, students and visitors in the School • Part 1: all staff and students, Part 2: more applicable to people working in laboratories • Updated (July 2008), available on WebLearn • Please complete SCoP test when convenient and return
- 3. Science Centre Emergency Procedures • Emergency Services (P2 SCoP) – 666 on any internal telephone for University Emerg. Services – 9-999 on any internal telephone for external Emerg. Services • Fire Alarm (P2 SCoP) – Leave the building as quickly as possible in an orderly fashion using the stairways (nearest fire exit). Evacuation assembly point: opposite main doors of Science Centre – Remove laboratory coat (though priority is to evacuate) – Do not use the lifts – Do not collect personal belongings – Leave laboratory experiments in a safe condition – Fire alarm test every Wednesday at 10:00

Science Centre Emergency Procedures • On discovering a fire (P2 SCoP) – Sound the fire alarm and alert emergency services as above – Do not attempt to use a fire extinguisher unless you have received appropriate training – (Inform a member of staff immediately) • Accidents (P3 SCoP) – First Aider list – In case of serious injury, contact the emerg. services immediately as above – All accidents and near misses must be reported using the University’s Accident/Incident report form – (inform a member of staff immediately)
- 5. Laboratory Housekeeping • SCoP – Section 14, P8. You will learn these skills in your practical classes • Spillage and Disposal procedures – SCoP Risk Assessment • SCoP – Section 3, P4 (MHSWR 1999) • Contained within module booklets – familiarise yourself with these assessments

COSHH and PPE • COSHH (2002) • Personal Protective Equipment – Control of Substances (PPE) Hazardous to Health – Safety spectacles and lab. coats – SCoP Section 22 must be worn at all times in – Module booklets – familiarise the laboratory yourself with these – Lab. coats and gloves must assessments not be taken out of the laboratory (Micro CL2 lab.). Do not wear lab. coats & gloves in corridors – Please return lab. Coats to their correct numbered locker when finished

SuperLab Procedures • Entry – Working hours: 09:00 – 17:00, Monday to Friday – Personal items into lockers in the corridors outside laboratory – At least 2 persons present with adequate supervision – PPE as above (lab. coats, gloves & safety spectacles) – Please follow instructions given by members of staff – Overall; any problems or questions re. health and safety, speak to a member of staff
