Thank you so much for joining us today, for this special seminar in collaboration with the Turkish Libraries Association.
My name is Vanessa Fairhurst and I am International Community Outreach Manager at Crossref, I previously worked in International Development, helping individuals and institutions in Africa, Asia and Latin America to access scholarly research and knowledge. A firm belief in the importance of connecting research and information around the world led me to Crossref where my role of International Community Outreach Manager connects me with a range of different people working across diverse disciplines and sectors.
I work directly with Rachael Lammey within the Outreach team, Rachael has been at Crossref for over five years and started as a Product Manager, looking after the Crossmark and Similarity Check services. She started her career at publisher Taylor & Francis, running the team that implemented manuscript tracking systems for journals and ran peer review administration.
Together we work on Crossref’s international outreach activities including coordinating our LIVE local events, such as this one, both online and in person, which are regional events, providing a tailored program of activities including information on the key concepts of Crossref, the services we offer and our future plans. We talk more about our outreach activities and how you get more involved with Crossref towards the end of the seminar today.
You will also today be hearing from Prof. Dr. Serkan Eryilmaz (Vice president of Atilim University), he will be talking about about the needs of researchers and valuable services of Crossref for researchers.
Madeleine Watson, Product Manager at Crossref along with Rachael Lammey will be talking to you about the different services we offer including Reference Linking and Cited By, Similarity Check, Funding Information, Crossmark and our new initiatives such as Event Data.
Also many thanks to our interpreter, Dogan Kusmus, for helping us run this event today.
Here is our agenda for the day.
After this brief introduction you will be hearing from Rachael Lammey about how to register your content and update your metadata with Crossref, followed by a presentation by Prof. Dr. Serkan Eryilmaz on the experiences and needs of researchers. After that at approximately 2pm we will have a short 15 min break, before Rachael Lammey and Madeleine Watson talk us through the services at Crossref and our future plans. We will end with ways in which to keep in touch, get more involved, and answer any final questions you may have.
We have not ran an online event quite like this before so please bear with us. Feel free to ask lots of questions and share your experiences and feedback.
So first a bit of house-keeping:
To cut down on background noise, everyone is on mute.
Please ask questions in the chat box, we will take them at the end of each presentation.
The slides and recording will be shared via email soon afterwards.
I’ll start with a quick overview of Crossref and our role within the scholarly publishing sector.
So, we are Crossref, a not-for-profit membership organisation for scholarly publishing, working to make content easy to find, cite, link and assess. We do this in five ways: rallying the community, tagging metadata, running a shared infrastructure, playing with new technology and making tools and services to improve research communications. It’s as simple - and as complicated - as that.
We also have our guiding ‘truths’.
Collaboration is at the core of everything we do. Our focus is on things that are best achieved by working together. We involve the community through active working groups and committees.
We do R&D to support and expand the shared infrastructure we run for the scholarly community. Building on the metadata we collect, we use standard web technologies and create open source tools and services to help our members solve problems and meet best publishing practice.
Our broad and inclusive community may have different views, but when it comes to law and policy, Crossref remains impartial.
We are obsessed with persistence - of links, of our technology, and of the organization. Membership and service fees cover our costs, and our surplus means we can do new things and sustain the community infrastructure for the long term.
We have 30 staff based in Oxford, UK and Boston, USA working across outreach, technology, development, product and operations
We were founded in 2000 with 12 publishers - in the past 16 years this has grown to over 8000 members and affiliated organisations. Publishers, libraries, sponsors, funders, researchers, and more, all use our services.
You can also check crossref.org/people to put faces to names and learn more about our different members of staff.
We have a 16 member board which is a good cross section of international publishers - Non-profit, commercial, large, small, cross-discipline and multi-regional.
We send out voting information in September of each year - it’s important that all members exercise their right to vote. The board elections are each November, this year’s election is the first ever contested one and the new board will be announced at our annual meeting held this year in Singapore.
We additionally have Advisory groups and committees which are other ways people become involved. These are working groups on services and other interests, such as book publishing, standards, etc.
The largest group of Crossref members is publishers and they come in all shapes and sizes - commercial, society, government, university. If you publish scholarly content, you are a publisher.
We have a metadata stored of over 90 million scholarly content items and we expect to hit the 100 million mark sometime early next year.
Our services allow our members to enhance their publication record, provide a standard way to report funding sources for scholarly research
Our Crossmark service provides a way for publishers to report and display any corrections and retractions, allowing researchers to know they have access to current and accurate sources
Our Similarity Check services enables checking of manuscripts for similarities with other registered content, we provide data about content activity offering transparency around the way interactions with scholarly research occur online, and access to our Open metadata API and search which can be used for a wide range of purposes.
Not only publishers use Crossref, but many others as well. - for example funders, research councils, data centres, lab and diagnostic suppliers.
And we continue to grow each year, the uses of Crossref metadata are diverse and ever progressing.
Our membership is steadily increasing year on year, here you can see our new members this year as of yesterday. Since Jan 1st we have had 1594 new members in total with publishers and represented members being the largest of these groups. Represented members are those who join Crossref and register their content via one of our sponsoring organisations. We have sponsoring organisations in Brazil, Turkey, South Korea, Russia, Japan, India who work with publishers from those countries and can offer support in the local language and facilitate payment in the local currency.
115 members joined in total from Turkey so far this year, over 80% of these are represented members.
When we first began, the majority of publisher and affiliate members were from the US and UK, with a small number from Germany, the Netherlands, and Japan. Last year alone we had 1815 new members from 89 countries, Turkey being 6th largest in terms of new Crossref members since Aug 2016.
At last count 125 countries had a least one member with Crossref.
You can register more than just journal articles with Crossref, although this is does account for the largest type of content registered. You can also register items such as technical reports, peer reviews, data sets, conference proceedings and more. Books are the fastest growing content type and our newest type is pre-prints.
When registering content with us publishers also need to include accurate and comprehensive metadata about their content. This can include author names, abstracts, funder identifiers, license information, ORCID ID’s and information about any updates, retractions or corrections. The more detailed this metadata the more discoverable the content is by others.
Our affiliates can also then use this Metadata for a wide range of purposes such as bibliographic and library management tools, reporting on funding activities and outcomes, text mining, authoring and annotation tools to name but a few.
You can read more about Crossref as an organisation and find out information on our services, team, and events on our new website.
We have plans to translate the site and the technology is already in place for this. Phase 2 will accommodate multiple languages in the site search, so don’t worry multi-lingual support has not been forgotten.
We’ll talk more about our services and how you can get involved later in the day. I’ll now pass onto Rachael Lammey who is going to talk in more depth about how to register your content and metadata with Crossref.
