3. Neonatology:
It is the branch of medicine concerned with the
comprehensive health care of neonates during illness
and wellness.
4. Neonate:
Human being aged 0 to 28 days.
Neonatal Period:
A period from birth to 28 days of life.
Infant:
Human being aged 0 days to 1 year.
Infantile Period:
A period from birth to 1 year of life.
5. Stages of Life:
A. Intrauterine Period:
Ovum: 0 to 2 weeks
Embryo: 2 to 9 Weeks
Foetus: 9 weeks to birth
B. Neonatal period: Birth to 28 days of life (neonate: 0 to
28 days)
C. Perinatal period: 28th Weeks of gestation to 7 days
after birth
D. Infancy/Infantile Period: Birth to 1 year age of life
E. Toddler: 1 to 3 years age of life ( Toddlerhood: period 1
to 3 years)
F. Childhood: 3 to 10 years age of life
G. Adolescence: 10 to 19 years age of life
6. Categories of neonates:
According to the gestational age/ level of maturity:
A. Preterm: < 37 weeks of gestation
B. Term: Full 37 weeks to 42 weeks of gestation
C. Post-term: > 42 completed weeks of gestation

According to the weight at birth:
A. Macrosomia: Birth weight 4kg and above
B. Normal Weight: 2500 gm – 3999 gm (2.5kg up to 4 kg)
C. Low Birth weight (LBW): 1500 gm - 2499 gm ( < 2.5kg)
D. Very Low Birth weight (VLBW): 1000 – 1499 gm (<1.5 kg)
E. Extremely Low Birth weight (ELBW): 750 – 999 gm (<1 kg)
F. Incredible Low Birth weight (ILBW): < 750 gm (up to 749 gm)

Considering birth weight - gestational age relationship
A. Prematurity/ Appropriate for gestational age (AGA): if
the birth weight for gestational age falls within 10th to 90th
centile in Lubchenco graph (Premature Neonate)
B. Small for gestational age (SGA)/ Intra Uterine Growth
Retardation (IUGR): if the birth weight for gestational
age falls below 10th centile in Lubchenco graph
C. Large for gestational age (LGA): if the birth weight for
gestational age falls above 90th centile in Lubchenco
graph
