What is a Reading Response?
For the purposes of this course, a Reading Response is a written response to an assigned reading. You should write it after you have finished reading the article and done some thinking about it. It is somewhat like a journal entry, in that it is not a formal essay; however, you should make an effort to make your response have a somewhat academic but also somewhat conversational tone.
Your response should be entitled as follows: Reading Response, “Name of Article”.
In your first paragraph, include, again, the title of the article and the author. Use his or her complete name. After you have given the author’s name, be sure to refer to him or her by their last name in the rest of your response. In this first paragraph, give a brief summary of the article, telling what you think is the author’s main point, or at least the most important point, and briefly tell how the author has gone about explaining his or her point. By ‘point’, I mean his or her opinion, or, if you don’t consider it opinion, his or her main point of fact. In any event, don’t spend the entire response saying what the author has said.
The rest of your response should consist of YOUR thoughts and feelings about the article and the author’s ideas. You can do this by indicating your own experiences as a way of agreeing or disagreeing with the author, or you can base your ideas on other things you have read or that you have learned about. Try to find some way of connecting with the piece, whether experientially or academically.
Please refrain from criticizing an article as boring or making other value judgements, just because you disagree with the ideas or because you don’t understand what is being said. Your misunderstanding and boredom or not the fault of the writer. Remember that even if the writer has expressed an opinion that bothers you, it’s still that writer’s right to do so, and, as you may know, getting a college education means coming into contact with ideas that are new (or even contrary) to you. So, enjoy the challenge of being able to respond to the material that you read.

FUN HOME: HOW DO WE READ A “PAGE”?
While reading a traditional prose text (such as a book, article, textbook, short story, report, etc…), this is usually not a complex choice:
EXAMPLE from F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby:

Conduct may be founded on the hard rock or the wet marches, but after a certain point I don’t care what it’s founded on. It’s very obvious, right? One simply starts at the upper left-hand corner, reads the top line from left to right, and then continues down to the next line—and repeats the process, sometimes for thousands of lines! Predictable? Sure! Engaging? Maybe…
“Graphic texts” do not work in the same way. As I try to provide examples, please note a basic way to refer to specific parts of a graphic text. Besides indicating pages, I ask that you refer to “panels.” For example, if I refer to 7,2 that would mean page 7, panel 2 (the one featuring Bruce in his classroom).

A) In all of these texts, these writers speak of how reading allowed them to claim their identity, to raise their voice, to see their world more clearly, to find the words they had been unable to say. Refer to a specific example of this process from each of the texts. Which readings (or types of readings) are mentioned? What sort of effects did these readings have on the people reading them? What might be significant about the choices they made or the reactions they had?
B) In all of these texts, these writers speak of reading and writing as a social process, one that deeply involves their families. Refer to a specific example of this process from each of the texts. Which readings are chosen and shared? Who shares them with whom? Why and how might these exchanges of texts and ideas matter?
C) In all of these readings, the writers recall that they were very curious about a range of different texts. In what ways were they influenced by “classic literature” and in what ways did they also search for inspiration in texts that might not be considered “literature?” Refer to a specific example of this process from each of the texts. Which readings (or types of readings) are mentioned? What sort of readings seem to have the most profound effects on each author? What might be significant about the types of readings that they chose and considered most influential?
It is worth 8 points (all-or-nothing). It needs to be emailed in a Word file (or just “pasted” into an email), by NOON on Thursday, June 10th.
To get 8 points, you need to:

Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.

2. About Me
My name is Brendan and I’m a 22-year-old senior. It has
taken me quite a bit longer to get to this point than I
would like to admit to, mostly due to indecisiveness
regarding my major. I’ve switched between Psychology
and English numerous times and spent a year trying my
hand at computer science for the obvious monetary
reasons, only to find that harboring a love of consumer
electronics does not equate a knack for actual coding
talents. Finally, I’m back as an English major, the thing I
know I should have been pursuing all along. Other than
that, I have a lovely little girl who is currently 9-monthsold named Charlotte and a wonderful fiancé named
Lauren.
3. Favorite Authors
Both shamefully and ironically for an English student, I must admit that I do not read
anywhere near the amount I should as an English major. My main “excuses” are
comorbid; I find myself at a loss for leisure time between school, part time work, and
my daughter and I read excruciatingly slowly. These issue compound in fairly
obvious ways but when I finally am presented with an opportunity to read for pure
entertainment, I gravitate towards short stories so that I may be able to finish them
quickly and not need to worry about coming back to something later. During these
times, my favorite writers are as follows:
-Chuck Palahniuk
-Richard Dawkins
-Harlan Ellison
-Isaac Asimov
4. Chuck Palahniuk
I am a naturally sarcastic, cynical, and analytical person.
While Palahniuk may not always hit the latter nail on the
head, he makes up for it by simply beating the former two
into a fine, bloody pulp for the reader to bask in. His voice
is so distinct and his verbiage simultaneously dark and
colorful that I would be able to pick out his writing if it
were wrapped in as a children’s book and read in such a
tone. My interest began after viewing the film, Fight Club,
and being entranced with it’s twisted-yet-reasonable
ideology. As a fan of short stories, Haunted, was a
natural fit who’s images still compel me to use more
“enriched” tones in my own writing.
5. Richard Dawkins
Many will tell you, when asked the rational behind their choice
of religion, that they were raised as such and leave it at that. To
me, as a person who was “raised Catholic”, I prefer to use the
(albeit loaded) term, “Brainwashed”. And I would say this to
anyone, my deeply Christian fiancé and her parents included.
At a young age, I began to question the logistics of all the
famous Catholic tales and stories and before my 13th birthday,
declared myself an atheist to my parents, much to their
collective dismay. Dawkins, for me, is the writer who writes in a
way similar to the way I tend to think. While reading The God
Delusion (which I admittedly, have yet to complete) I find
myself, on nearly every page, finding collections of words that
appeared in my mind just as they were written before my eyes.
6. Asimov and Ellison
I have decided to group these two men together for reasons other
than simplicity and the fact that they are both as representative of
science fiction as Bill Gates and Steve Jobs are representatives of
the Electronics industry. To me, they represent the versatility of the
genera and share nearly nothing in common outside of that.
Asimov is a world-builder, a rational and analytical man, and a
hopeful, yet cautious, futurist. He constructs worlds and laws as a
baker constructs cookies. Ellison, conversely, is much more
cynical and anything but a humanist. He thrives in dystopia and
revels in the chaotic and unreasonable. Between these two men is
contained the vast spectrum of science fiction that I find great love
for as a person who’s heart flutters with every technological
advance and shutters as I see how humanity utilizes them. As
such, I find myself longing to be as hopeful of the future as
Asimov, but cannot shake my expectation of humanity’s future,
based entirely on our collective past.
