INTERVIEWS WITH IMMIGRANTS

1. My name is Mohamet and I am 28 years old. I am from Egypt.

2. Tourist purposes and then I like Cyprus and decide to stay in
Cyprus.

3. Yes.

4. No. Apart from one cousin who is married in Cyprus with a
Romanian girl. My family miss me a lot and I miss them a lot as well. I
have got six sisters who I love a lot. I go there three times a year
and visit my family. My dad did not want me to leave Egypt.

5. The reason I choose Cyprus is because I like the understanding of
friendship and the way of life. I feel happy about my decision.

6. It was difficult to prepare the paperwork for working visa. I don’t
need to do any more paper work now.

7. The value of the money I earn here is more than the value of the
money I would earn in my country doing the same job. I can offer my
family a good living with the money I earn in Cyprus.

8. The behaviour of the local society and the neighbours towards
migrant workers is very good.

9. I find Cyprus more quiet and friendlier. I see my country the
same way.

10. I would like to live in your country for ever because I feel like
living in my own country. I feel like home.

                                                                        1
INTERVIEWS WITH IMMIGRANTS

1. My name is Mary and I am 33 years old. I am from Vietnam.

2. I left my country because I had no money to buy food, shelter and
clothing for my children.

3. Yes, it is customary for them to leave.

4. No, my sister and I.

5. Yes, my husband and my children. My daughter is 8 years old and
my son is 5 years old. It is difficult for both sides. For me because I
left my children and they will grow up without their mother. I come
to work in Cyprus to send money for a better future, to build my
house so that my children can have a better life than I and my
husband. Yes, I am a pleased.

6. It was very difficult because I had to prepare a photo album of
my life and what I could manage to do. I prepared it, then went to
the agent in Vietnam and said that I am interested in working in
Cyprus and I applied. I have heard of Cyprus from my friends and I
was interested because I was told that they are good people and the
money I would get would be enough. I paid $ 4.500 in my country so
I can come to work. When I arrived in Cyprus I had to do medical
exams and go to the police.

7. The money that I get from my job is more than enough for my
country. In Cyprus I earn 300 euros corresponding to 8100.000 in
Vietnamese currency. With this money my family can buy food,
clothes while I can build my house.

8. My employers have very good behaviour, they care for me and
protect me. It was difficult to adjust because Cyprus has a
different way of life, for instance the fact that I did not know the
language. I had to learn to do the housework and take care of the

                                                                       2
grandfather and grandmother. In my country I did not have the
comfort that I came and found. It was all difficult for me. It was a
problem for the Cypriot food to learn to eat and to cook. My
relationship with other girls from other countries such as
Philippines, China, Srilanka, is very good. Every Sunday I go to
Nicosia to see my friends and to speak my language and also to say
what problems we have. We are given the opportunity to sit down to
eat our countries food and talk about our countries news.

9. I am very sad to be away from my children and my husband but I
got work for a better future. I try to get along as best as I can so
time can pass by faster. I miss my family and especially my children,
but it was my choice.

10. I would like to stay in Cyprus more than the 4 years that my visa
allows, in order to send more money for my children and their
education, so that they do not have to leave their family like I had
to leave mine.
