Mental health has been in the news quite a bit lately. Dozens of U.S. states are currently suing Meta for contributing to the youth mental health crisis by inserting addictive features into their products, while the U.S. Surgeon General is touring the nation to bring awareness to the growing epidemic of loneliness and isolation. The country has endured periods of low national morale, such as in the 1970s when high inflation and the energy crisis worsened public sentiment following the Vietnam War. The current mood, however, feels different. Gallup recently reported that national mental health is at an all-time low, with few bright spots to lift spirits.
To better understand how Americans are feeling and their attitudes towards mental health in general, ThinkNow conducted a nationally representative quantitative survey of 1,500 respondents and found some interesting differences among ethnic, age and gender groups.
Technology
For example, 52% agree that technology and social media have a negative impact on mental health, but when broken out by race, 61% of Whites felt technology had a negative effect, and only 48% of Hispanics thought it did.
While technology has helped us keep in touch with friends and family in faraway places, it appears to have degraded our ability to connect in person. Staying connected online is a double-edged sword since the same news feed that brings us pictures of the grandkids and fluffy kittens also feeds us news about the wars in Israel and Ukraine, the dysfunction in Washington, the latest mass shooting and the climate crisis.
Hispanics may have a built-in defense against the isolation technology breeds, owing to their large, multigenerational households, strong social support systems, and tendency to use social media to stay connected with relatives abroad.
Age and Gender
When asked how individuals rate their mental health, men rate it higher than women by 11 percentage points, and Baby Boomers rank it highest at 83%, saying it’s good or excellent vs. 57% of Gen Z saying the same.
Gen Z spends the most amount of time on social media, so the notion that social media negatively affects mental health appears to be correlated. Unfortunately, Gen Z is also the generation that’s least comfortable discussing mental health concerns with healthcare professionals. Only 40% of them state they’re comfortable discussing their issues with a professional compared to 60% of Millennials and 65% of Boomers.
Race Affects Attitudes
As seen in previous research conducted by ThinkNow, Asian Americans lag other groups when it comes to awareness of mental health issues. Twenty-four percent of Asian Americans believe that having a mental health issue is a sign of weakness compared to the 16% average for all groups. Asians are also considerably less likely to be aware of mental health services in their communities (42% vs. 55%) and most likely to seek out information on social media (51% vs. 35%).

V tak som si stopol auto, no domov som sa dostal až
po polnoci. Dopadlo to dobre, ale bola to predzvesť
niečoho väčšieho. Mama sa až tak nesmiala, povedala
niečo v duchu „je ľahké ľúbiť dobrého“. Otec vtedy žil
v Iraku a keď sa po nejakom čase vrátil domov, mal
čo robiť, aby ma opäť nasmeroval správnym smerom.
MIAU Kedy ste po prvý raz pocítili, že
Slovensko vám začína byť primalé?
Odísť nebolo až také ťažké. Môj brat žije dvadsať
rokov v USA, otec strávil štyri roky v Iraku a moja
Vraj ste ako dieťa boli dobrodružný typ, ktorý sa rád
túlal a strácal. Vymykali ste sa „rodinnému priemeru“,
alebo máte dobrodružstvo zakódované v DNA?
Odmalička som sa rád strácal a vytrácal. Najprv rodičom a starej
mame, neskôr skautským vodcom. Odkedy si pamätám, trávil
som prázdniny v Predajnej, maličkej dedinke pri Banskej Bystrici,
a potom od desiatich rokov v skautských táboroch na Slovensku
a neskôr v Španielsku. Mame som raz utiekol, to som mohol
mať tak dvanásť. Nebol to zúfalý útek z domu, jednoducho
som sa vybral v podvečer z bratislavského Ružinova na Pajštún
za kamarátmi skautmi, ale cestou sa zotmelo, začal som sa báť,

tvorivých ľudí. Jeden príklad za všetky: Raz cez víkend sme si prenajali malé šľachtické sídlo
v Pyrenejach, bolo nás tak tridsať, takže to bolo relatívne lacné. Každý dostal scenár, dobové
šaty a akoby šibnutím čarovného prútika sme sa všetci preniesli do 11. storočia na dvor kráľa
Balduina do Jeruzalema. Ja som hral veľvyslanca Svätej Rímskej ríše. V ten víkend kráľ zomrel,
s ním aj niekoľko rytierov, mňa zabila arabská tanečnica, arabskí mudrci čítali z kníh budúcnosť,
konal sa rytiersky turnaj, služobníctvo prežilo malú love story, skrátka stredovek, ako vyšitý...
MIAU Svoj barcelonský príbeh ste čiastočne zverejňovali na blogu. Aj keď kratučko,
ale už vtedy sa medzi riadkami objavila zmienka o Brazílii a Riu. Náhoda, alebo osud?
V Barcelone som sa zamotal s jednou ženou z Brazílie. Chvíľu to vyzeralo vážne, kúpil som si
letenku, že pôjdem na Vianoce 2006 do Ceará (štát na severovýchode Brazílie) za jej rodinou.
Nakoniec som pár dní pred odletom nenašiel pas, dodnes tomu nerozumiem. Ona si v Brazílii
kúpila letenku a povedala, že príde na Nový rok za mnou. Ja som medzitým obstaral v Bratislave
snubný prsteň. Dva dni predtým, ako prišla, mi však môj homosexuálny kamarát Molero ten
prsteň zabavil, vraj nie som na sobáš ešte pripravený. A že keď budem, nech si ho vypýtam.
Dodnes ho má. Nakoniec som do
Ceará išiel približne na mesiac. To
bol môj prvý kontakt s Brazíliou.
MIAU Ten druhý zrejme na
seba nenechal dlho čakať...
O rok neskôr v roku 2007 som
sa do Brazílie vrátil. V Žltých
stránkach som si našiel adresu
miestnej kancelárie PwC a šiel
som im zaklopať na dvere. O rok
neskôr, po množstve telefonátov,
nejakých videokonferenciách,
e-mailoch a trpezlivom čakaní
na ambasáde som sa presťahoval
do Ria. Toto je jedna z vecí, za
ktorú musím známu audítorskú
firmu pochváliť: dáva šancu
mladým kráčať za svojimi cieľmi.
MIAU Využili ste tú svoju?
Čestné skautské, že ani karneval, ani mulatky neboli
hlavný dôvod, prečo som v Brazílii ostal. I keď je to pádny
argument, uznávam. Už po mojej prvej ceste do Ceará
sa mi Brazília zapáčila a z toho, čo som videl a počul,
ochutnal a ovoňal, som dospel k záveru, že by som tam
vedel žiť dlhšie. Počas svojej druhej cesty v Salvadore som
bol na pytačkách v PwC, do toho vpadol začiatok dlhovej
krízy a jemné, ale zreteľné spomaľovanie španielskej
ekonomiky. Zdalo sa mi, že Brazília je krajina budúcnosti
a mať pracovnú ponuku z krajiny budúcnosti sa mi zdalo
veľmi príťažlivé. Ale zvažoval som aj na iné krajiny:
Rusko, Indiu, Čínu, Angolu, ale vždy ma niečo odradilo:
niekde je priveľká zima, niekde sa priveľa pracuje,
niekde je priveľa ľudí, inde zasa priveľa kultúrnych
rozdielov... Avšak Brazília, hoci trochu ďalej na mape, sa
mi kultúrne zdala relatívne blízko. Aj po piatich rokoch
to dnes stále považujem za správne rozhodnutie.
MIAU Takže ste sa
presťahovali do krajiny
slnka, krásnych žien,
samby, ale aj vysokej
kriminality a chudoby
ostro kontrastujúcej
s luxusom. Čo vás
očarilo najviac, že ste sa
rozhodli v Brazílii ostať?
Brazílčania majú pravdu,
keď hovoria, že žijú v
krajine budúcnosti. Je
tu neuveriteľne veľa
príležitostí, skvelé podnebie,
výborné jedlo, chýba mi
tu snáď iba dobrá indická
reštaurácia (vidíte, ďalšia
príležitosť pre niekoho
šikovného). Mojim hosťom
hovorievam, aby si dali
na rohu s občerstvením
každý deň iný džús. Aj
keby zostali celý mesiac,
ani tak sa nedostanú na
koniec menu. V Riu je
ľahké žiť zdravo, keď sa
niekomu chce, takisto
ako je ľahké pretancovať
a prepiť celé noci...
MIAU Začiatky bývajú
ťažké - tak sa aspoň
zvykne hovoriť. Bol
to aj váš prípad?
Patálie som mal najmä
s úradmi. V Brazílii funguje
síce kopec organizácií
a agentúr na podporu
mikropodnikania, ale
v praxi o tom nič nevedia.
Stalo sa nám, že najlepšia
rada, na ktorú sa zmohli,
znela: „Pozrite si to na
Googli.“ Ďakujeme,
ale Google sme mali
prešmejdený už mesiace
predtým, ako sme k nim
prišli v dobrej viere, že
nám dajú nejakú novú
cennú informáciu. Nestalo
sa. Základným pravidlom
pri každom úradnom
stará mama nemala ani jedno zo
svojich šiestich vnúčat v tom istom
štáte - šlo v podstate o prirodzený
vývoj. Ale chvíľu to trvalo. Prvýkrát
som sa do Španielska vybral dosť
narýchlo. Zavolal som kamarátovi
Mravcovi, tuším v utorok, či nejde
do Madridu, on na to, že áno, a
kedy teda vyrazíme a ja že o piatej.
Cestovali sme stopom, trvalo nám to
okolo šesťdesiat hodín, čo považujem
za celkom dobrý čas. Zastavilo nám
kde-čo, od áut, ktoré bolo treba na
ceste opraviť, až po Porsche, ktorého
majiteľ nás najskôr obišiel, neskôr
zastavil, nacúval a prehlásil: „Ak sa
zmestíte, odveziem vás.“ O pár rokov
neskôr, v auguste 2004, som sa do
Španielska vrátil, ale už lietadlom a
s podpísanou pracovnou zmluvou.
MIAU V akej oblasti ste pracovali?
Pracoval som pre audítorskú firmu
PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) a
našiel som v sebe dosť odvahy, aby
som partnerovi povedal, že mám
veľkú chuť na zmenu v živote. Spýtal
sa na detaily a ja som mu odpovedal,
že buď zmením firmu alebo krajinu,
no a on sa postaral, aby som zmenil
krajinu. Dal mi vybrať medzi Mexikom
a Španielskom. Vybral som si síce
Španielsko, no ani tomu Mexiku som
sa napokon celkom nevyhol. (smiech)
MIAU Užili ste si Barcelonu
podľa svojich predstáv?
Podľa mňa je to jedno z
najpríjemnejších miest na život v
Európe. V Barcelone som prežil
štyri nezabudnuteľné roky, tam
som po prvý raz pochopil, čo sú
to „kultúrne rozdiely“. Voľný čas
som trávil na stand-up comedies,
v kúzelníckych kluboch, v salsových
baroch, pri plážovom volejbale,
v malých indických reštauráciách
v Ravale, na Plaça Reial som vypil
litre kávy a tiež slušné množstvo
absinthu v bare Marsella. S mojím
švédskym kamarátom sme sa
dostali do zaujímavej skupiny
musíš sa ‚stropikalizovať‘, to
ti pomôže aj vo vzťahoch, aj
tebe samému.“ Mala pravdu.
Tropikalizáciu odporúčam
každému a nemyslím si, že na
to, aby ste boli stropikalizovaní,
treba žiť v Riu. (smiech)
MIAU A samotní ľudia?
Akí sú Brazílčania?
Veľmi príjemní a spoločenskí.
Small talk vo výťahu, len tak na
rohu, na zástavke, v čakárni (tu
sa veľa čaká) málokto zvládne
lepšie, ako práve Brazílčan.
Pravdepodobne nakoniec pridá
„a zastav sa u nás doma“ a povie
to bez toho, aby ponúkol svoj
telefón alebo adresu, len tak,
lebo sa to tu tak hovorí. A ty
odpovieš, „jasné, prídem“ i
keď obaja viete, že sa už nikdy
neuvidíte. Brazílčania ale tiež
neradi vytŕčajú z radu a starajú
sa hlavne o seba, hoci niekedy
veľmi krátkozrako. To mi vadilo
od začiatku a vadí mi to dodnes.
Viackrát mi povedali, nech sa
do niečoho nestarám, lebo ma
raz zastrelia. Ale mne sa nechce
stáť vedľa a tváriť sa, že som nič
nevidel. Mňa tak nevychovali.
MIAU Okrem toho, že ste
mali svoju prácu, rozhodli
ste sa viesť ešte aj hostel.
Nebodaj ste nemali kde
ubytovávať priateľov, ktorí
za vami prichádzali.
Kdeže, to ja som nemal kde bývať.
Keď sa nám nájomná zmluva
začala chýliť ku koncu, bolo treba
popremýšľať, čo ďalej. Vtedy už
bolo jasné, že v Brazílii sa budú
konať majstrovstvá sveta vo
futbale i letná olympiáda a ceny
nehnuteľností začali rásť a s nimi
aj nájmy. Porovnali sme si pár
čísiel a vyšlo nám, že lacnejšie
je kúpiť, ako prenajať. A tiež, že
sa viac oplatí kúpiť starý veľký
dom, ako nejaký byt. Zostávalo
len domyslieť, kto nám to zaplatí.
So zárukou na bankový úver mi
pomohli brat aj rodičia, a tak sa
zrodil hostel Lisetonga. Máme
v ňom dosť miesta a postelí pre
rodinné návštevy až do x-tého
kolena, kamarátov, samozrejme,
nevynímajúc. (smiech) Niektorí
ale odmietajú postele a radšej sa
vyspia v hojdacích sieťach vo veži.

výkone v Brazílii je: akokoľvek dobre sa pripravíš, určite bude
treba ešte jeden papier, ešte jednu pečiatku, ešte odbehnúť niekde
inde, ešte niekde niekomu všetko raz a znovu zopakovať. Vznikla
na to dokonca jedna zvláštna pracovná pozícia - „despachante“,
akýsi „čakateľ v rade“. Človek, ktorý sa živí tým, že má čas
a vie, v ktorom rade ho má stráviť a pri akej príležitosti.
MIAU Zvykli ste si po rokoch na podobné absurdnosti?
Dodnes ma vytáča, že aj úplne bežné veci sú tu nesmierne komplikované. Presvedčiť
telekomunikácie, aby nám namontovali do domu internet, to bola riadna fuška! Aj
postupy sú tu vo všetkom často opačné. Pokiaľ si pamätám, na Slovensku to funguje
tak, že sa najprv vybavia všetky povolenia a potom sa otvorí dotyčná prevádzka. Tu
je to často presne opačne, najprv sa otvorí prevádzka a postupne sa začne pracovať
na povoleniach. Nie vždy sa všetky vybavia na prvý raz. Na to majú v Brazílii
pekné slovo. Tu nie sú veci „nelegálne“, ale „neformálne“. Prvý rok ma vytáčalo
dosť veľa vecí, všetko sa mi zdalo príliš pomalé. Potom mi ale jedna partnerka
z PwC dala krásnu radu: „Juraj, nám sa páči, ako pracuješ, bude ti u nás dobre, ale

ratingoch na hlavných stránkach, cez ktoré
predávame. A veľmi rád si sadnem s hosťami na
caipirinhu alebo pohár vína, občas spolu zájdeme
na večeru alebo do Lapy na sambu. Nájdu sa
medzi nimi veľmi zaujímaví a scestovaní ľudia.
MIAU Podarilo sa vám vniesť do
Lisetongy aj kus Slovenska?
Približne pred rokom som sa dohodol s rodičmi,
že všetko, čo je u nich odložené na nedôstojných
miestach, za skriňou, pod posteľou a podobne,
pôjde do Brazílie. Tak sa stalo, že na mnohých
miestach v hosteli je zastúpené Slovensko: mapa
československých hradov a zámkov, šálky s fotkami
Bratislavy a Trenčína, fotky bratislavského
podhradia a máme aj izbu, ktorá sa volá Bratislava.
Susedov Čechov zastupuje plagát Rumcajsa a
zbierka krásnych prázdnych fliaš fernetu, z ktorých
sme spravili osvetlenie na jednej z terás...
MIAU Ak odhliadneme od ceny, v čom sú
hostely v porovnaní s hotelmi príťažlivejšie?
Veľké hotely sú anonymné fabriky na prenocovanie.
Rovnaký názor zdieľa aj väčšina mojich hostí. Hostel
si vyberú mladí ľudia, ktorí cestujú veľmi dlho
alebo veľmi lacno. Ďalšou skupinkou sú tí, ktorých
voláme „flashpackeri“ (namiesto „backpackeri“), teda
ľudia, ktorí nemajú problém s peniazmi, ale hostel
uprednostňujú hlavne kvôli atmosfére a možnosti
ľahko sa pridať do nejakej akčnej skupinky. V hosteli
je vždy väčšia šanca, že sa niečo stane. Niektoré
hostely hrajú tvrdo na cenu a podľa toho to tam aj
vyzerá. Iné vsádzajú na krásne zariadené spoločné
priestory a často aj izby a logicky sú iba o málo
lacnejšie ako hotely. Základom sú kúpeľne, postele
a raňajky. To zvládne veľa hostelov. Čo väčšina
nezvláda, je miesto, atmosféra a zamestnanci. Tam
sa láme chlieb a tam my vyhrávame nad mnohými
hostelmi v Riu. Na Tripadvisore sme na treťom
mieste z 250 hostelov v Riu. Nie je ľahké si toto
postavenie udržať, sme naň veľmi hrdí a veľmi nám
to pomáha naplniť hostel hlavne mimo sezóny.
MIAU Zostávajú po hosťoch priateľstvá?
Dávate prednosť starej overenej partii priateľov,
alebo sa rovnako dobre cítite medzi podobne
naladenými ľuďmi, hoci aj stále novými?
Nikto nie je taký pekný ako jeho profil na facebooku,
ani taký škaredý ako jeho fotka z vodičáku.
Považujem sa za hanblivého introverta, ale
priznávam, že mi to často ľudia nechcú veriť. S pár
hosťami sme dodnes v kontakte a napíšeme si.
Niekedy sa stane, že u nás hosť zotrvá aj niekoľko
mesiacov a my mu potom spravíme peknú
rozlúčku. Keď odchádzala Akilah, študentka
z Trinidadu a Tobago, pustili sme jej Redemption
Song od Boba Marleyho, stáli sme v kruhu

a držali sa za ramená a každý z nás dal Akile
niekoľko dobrých rád do ďalšieho života. Zdá
sa, že väčšina mojich kamarátov pochádza z
cudziny a iba menšia časť sú Brazílčania.
MIAU Cítite sa v Brazílii bezpečne?
Na toto sa ma ľudia často pýtajú a keď im poviem,
že som v Brazílii nikdy nezažil pocit strachu ani
nebezpečenstva, tvária sa poriadne sklamane.
Tá časť Ria, v ktorej sa pohybujem ja a väčšina
mojich známych, sa podobá hociktorému
juhoeurópskemu veľkému mestu: keď si nedáš
pozor, niečo sa stane, keď si pozor dáš a nie si
hlupák, tak sa s najväčšou pravdepodobnosťou
nestane nič. Kým som žil v Európe, dvakrát
mi vykradli byt, dvakrát otvorili auto, stratené
peňaženky nemá ani zmysel počítať, raz mi
otvorili hotelovú izbu a pekne ju vyčistili.
Tu v Brazílii sa mi iba raz stratil telefón...

v predvídateľnej budúcnosti neplánujem z Ria odísť. Pred dvomi mesiacmi som
dostal ponuku ísť pracovať na nejaký čas do Angoly, ale odmietol som. Teraz je
v Riu skvelé obdobie a hoci sa stále sťažujem, viem, že je tu tak dobre, ako už dlho
nebolo. Chcem si to vychutnať. Stavili sme na Rio s tromi firmami, tak im treba dať
šancu a prípadne sa dobre pozerať, aby sme našli inšpiráciu a miesto pre ďalšie tri.
MIAU O Slovenkách sa hovorí, že sú najkrajšie ženy na svete.
Schovali by do vrecka aj temperamentné Brazílčanky?
Poviem vám jeden príklad: moji dvaja kamaráti Sergio a Bishop, pôvodom z Barcelony,
mali možnosť navštíviť Bratislavu aj Rio. A keď sme sa na túto tému v Riu na pláži
zhovárali, tak to zhrnuli výstižnou futbalovou terminológiou: „Vieš, Juro, Brazília má
skvelú základnú zostavu. Skvelú, ale lavička... tá sa so Slovenskom nedá porovnať!“
MIAU Keď raz budete svoj životný príbeh rozprávať
vnúčatám, aká životná múdrosť z neho vyplynie?
Nebáť sa a nekradnúť. Už Baťa to pekne vyjadril: Nebáť sa ísť za niečím, čomu
veríš, že je správne, ale nikoho iného pri tom neokradnúť, neobmedziť, nevziať mu
miesto na parkovanie, jeho miesto v rade, zemiaky zo záhrady, právo byť občas
smutný, právo vedieť pravdu, právo byť sám sebou. Povedal by som vnúčatám, že
sa nesmú báť, že život nám síce rozdá karty, ale hru života hráme sami a každý,
kto hrá poker, vie, že nie je dôležité, aké karty máš v ruke, ale ako to ustojíš.
MIAU Museli ste pod vplyvom nového prostredia, nových kultúr,
ľudí a situácií prehodnocovať svoj vnútorný rebríček hodnôt?
Skôr som mojím presťahovaním do Ria zistil, že mám v sebe nastavených pár základných
hodnôt, o ktorých jednoducho nevyjednávam. V Bratislave som si vedome nevšímal,
či je mesto čisté, alebo špinavé - asi preto, lebo bolo pre mňa prijateľne čisté. Tu pre
mňa prijateľne čisté nebolo, tak som začal konať. Nakúpili sme do našej ulice smetné
koše (mohli sme požiadať aj mesto o dodanie zdarma, ale to by sme čakali doteraz),
zohnali sme umelcov, aby nám šedé múry trochu spestrili grafitmi, osvetlili sme vežu,
aby to bolo z ulice pekné, na šedú betónovú stenu oproti kúpime palmy a svetlá a tiež
sa trochu inšpirujeme Gaudího parkom Guell z Barcelony a pozveme sem umelcov
z Česka, Tomáša Bilinu a Ondřeja Vyhnánka, aby nám tu urobili krásne plastiky. Už
sme s nimi v kontakte a vyzerá to dobre. V podstate som si tu lepšie uvedomil jednu
vec: nemá zmysel na niečo čakať, sťažovať sa a myslieť si, že to Niekto za mňa vyrieši.
Treba vstať, vyhrnúť si rukávy a ísť spraviť, čo treba. Je to taký pozitívny egoizmus: ja
chcem, aby bola ulica krajšia, lebo ja na nej bývam, ale nakoniec to pomôže všetkým,
čo po nej chodia. Možno keby takých egoistov bolo viac, mestá by boli krajšie...
MIAU Pocit domova. Prázdne slová, alebo zmysluplná emócia?
Keď idem do Bratislavy, hovorím, že idem domov. A keď idem naspäť do Ria, takisto
poviem, že idem domov. (smiech) Pred rokmi som hovorieval, že domov je tam, kde
večer zaspíš, ale už som sa umiernil. Dnes doma pre mňa znamená miesto, kde sa
nemusím hrať na niečo, čo nie som. Mám veľké šťastie, že mám takýchto domovov viac.
MIAU Viete už tancovať sambu?
Sambu ovládam. Ešte na Slovensku mi Miguelove
tanečnice, Norika aj iní učitelia vštepili veľmi
pevné základy latino tancov. Takže keď občas
treba zatancovať sambu, ide mi to celkom
v pohode. Dokonca i miestni sú prekvapení,
ako to, že gringo tancuje tak dobre. Ja im na
to väčšinou odpovedám, že všetci Slováci
skvele tancujú, čo mi oni, samozrejme, neveria.
Tak sa ich pýtam, koľko Slovákov poznajú...
Zatiaľ všetci odpovedali, že iba mňa. Tak
našu debatu uzavrieme tým, že sto percent
Slovákov, čo poznajú, tancuje dobre. (smiech)
MIAU Prišli ste na chuť miestnej kuchyni?
Mám veľmi rád brazílsku kuchyňu, zo všetkých
asi najradšej tú z oblasti Bahíe, kde cítiť z každého
jedla vplyv Afriky. Rovnako milujem našu
kuchyňu z Ria a okolia. Vo vnútrozemí mi chutí
menej, napríklad banícke jedlá z Minas Gerais,
kde sa v stredoveku ťažilo zlato, sú veľmi sýte až
ťažké. Smerom na juh sa konzumuje veľa mäsa,
pripraveného na jednoduché spôsoby, tak po
kovbojsky. Slovenské jedlá nevarím, radšej sa na ne
teším a vychutnávam si ich pri najbližšej návšteve
Bratislavy. Inak si ale svoj čas veľmi vážim
a venujem ho radšej niečomu inému, ako vareniu.
MIAU V Riu ste sa už konečne usadili,
alebo máte ešte stále túlavé topánky?
Audítori poznajú slovné spojenie „foreseeable
future“, predvídateľná budúcnosť. Takže
MIAU Hostel ste museli zrekonštruovať, zariadiť,
dotiahnuť papierovačky, spraviť mu reklamu...
Spravili sme to, lebo sme museli, najlepšie a najrýchlejšie, ako sme vedeli.
Viacerí kamaráti mi potom povedali, že neverili, že sa to podarí. Ja tiež nie,
veď týždeň pred prvým check-inom sme ešte nemali dokončené toalety.
Priateľka Liz už mala skúsenosti s prevádzkou hostela, predtým totiž v jednom
pracovala, ja som sa snažil pomôcť pri rekonštrukcii a nastavovaní vecí.
Reklamu nám spravili, aj keď to znie ako totálne klišé, naši spokojní klienti.
Dnes je náš hostel zabehnutá prevádzka, celkom nedávno sme oslávili druhé
narodeniny. Ja mu venujem približne hodinu denne, Liz viac. Kto raz začal
podnikať, len ťažko dokáže prestať, je to skvelá, legálna, vysoko energetická
droga, ktorú všetkým odporúčam. A asi jej nemáme dosť, lebo s Liz a našim
brazílskym partnerom sme sprevádzkovali ďalšie dve firmy, Happy Moto a Rio
Limobike. Tam ide momentálne väčšina môjho času. Happy Moto ponúka
celkom tradičný prenájom skútrov turistom. Prekvapujúco v Riu doteraz nič
také nebolo. Na podobnej myšlienke, zameranej však na inú skupinu ľudí, je
postavená Rio Limobike, ktorá ponúka rýchly a pohodlný presun z miesta
A do miesta B na komfortných motorkách BMW s veľmi úslužným a skúseným
vodičom. Nikde nie je napísané, že limuzína musí mať štyri kolesá...
MIAU Viete, čo sa v Lisetonge každý deň deje? Kto
kedy prichádza, odchádza, máte možnosť pohovoriť
si, posedieť s ľuďmi, ktorí u vás zložia kosti?
Nie aj áno. Hostel vedie Liz, moja šarmantná priateľka z Mexika, ktorú som si
so sebou vzal ešte z Barcelony. Liz za dva roky vybudovala skvelý tím. Spolu
sú siedmi, dvaja sa starajú o hostel cez deň, dvaja v noci, jedna osoba sa stará o
raňajky a čistotu a jedna o večerný bar. Nad nimi drží ochrannú aj železnú ruku
Liz ako manažérka. Lebo hostia majú radi, keď sa v hosteli stretnú s niekým,
kto zodpovedá za jeho chod. Celý tím je ale výborný a veľmi medzinárodný.
Momentálne máme zastúpené Mexiko, Brazíliu, Argentínu, Kolumbiu, Česko a
USA. Ja veľmi do každodenného chodu nezasahujem, väčšinou si všetci spolu
raz za týždeň sadneme a prejdeme si veci z minulého týždňa, porozprávame
sa o najbližších dňoch, týždňoch a mesiacoch. Samozrejme, mám prehľad
o rezerváciách, otvorených účtoch hostí a denných tržbách, ako aj o našich
