Passion and Objectivity
Quite often, reporters are asked to cover an issue they are passionate about. However, reporters must remain objective and accurate. The greatest challenge for even the most objective of reporters is to utilize an objective story angle as well.
But is this possible? Pure objectivity in journalism is difficult to achieve because of the human factor. Whether a writer knows it or not, the second they choose the story angle, the objectivity of the work has been diminished. Writing about passionate topics such as conservation and culture can stir the emotions of any staff writer, but the elements of the trade remain.
Professional reporters unlock new angles to trending topics and write passionately about it, but they do it with professional/acceptable objectivity and accuracy.
Essentially, provide a balanced debate and allow your readers to reach their own conclusions.

· Incorporate one visual ...

3) The document concludes with recommendations to abide by the Code of Conduct and relevant rules and regulations to maintain integrity and good public service.

Unmasking ICT through visual methodologies in participatory ICT4DSara Vannini
The document discusses three case studies that used visual methodologies in participatory research involving information and communication technologies for development (ICT4D). While visual methods helped participants reflect on ICT, changing practices requires long-term support. The studies intended to facilitate structural changes through ICT design and use, with varying levels of success. Overall, the document argues that visual methodologies provide a starting point for understanding inequalities related to ICT, and critical engagement with ICT must address

course of my internship which helped me gain tremendous knowledge and experience in
the field of journalism in the short duration of one month. Several other people at the site
of the events also contributed in my deeper understanding of how to tackle the situation at
hand and shared their experiences with me and I would like to wholeheartedly thank them
as well. None of this would be possible if not for our print teacher, Mrs. Manjula Bhatt who
taught us everything we know about reporting and writing articles for the newspaper and
so, I would like to thank her too. Last but not the least; I thank my parents and friends for
being supportive as always and encouraging me throughout.

8. ABSTRACT
The intern interned at Deccan Chronicle Holdings Ltd. Bangalore, BMTC Commercial
Complex, 5th Floor, 80ft Road, Koramangala from May 1st to June 2nd, 2014. Deccan
Chronicle is an Indian English-language daily newspaper which brings its readers news about
sports, business, current affairs, entertainment, politics, technology, lifestyle, infrastructure
and various other kinds of information from India and around the world.
The intern, in a period of one month, covered quite a few of these topics which include
politics, current affairs, infrastructure, climate, sports , lifestyle and business; and gained a
well rounded experience in print journalism. She worked under three sections of the paper
which cover these topics – Hard news, City and Sports. The nature of her assignments
mostly involve reporting and researching – on location and off location. She was asked to
think of ideas for a story and then was assigned several stories about political protests,
climatic conditions, award ceremonies, crimes, Soccer tournaments, press conferences,
exam toppers and the Metro for which she had to report to the location of the ongoing
stories or call the respective people and take the story forward to make it worthy of being
published in the newspaper.
9. TASK DETAILS AND ANALYSIS
I. HARDNEWS: CITY
A. Climate and temperature
1. News brief: Temperature rises in Bangalore
The intern was asked to think of story ideas and she chose to write about the temperature
rises in the city, which at the moment, seemed like the thought in ever Bangaloreans’ mind.
She called Mr. B Puttanna, the director of the Indian Meteorological Department and
interviewed him over the phone about the increasing temperature in Bangalore.
Understanding Mr. Puttanna was slightly difficult due to his strong regional accent and also
because of the highly technical terms relating to the topic. This was published as a news
brief. [Refer appendix 1]
2. Air pollution on the rise in Bangalore
The intern was given a press release by WHO regarding the air pollution in Bangalore and
was asked to go and talk to KSPCB Chairman, Dr. Vaman Acharya and she also chose to talk
to Dr. H Paramesh, Medical Director, Lakeside Medical Centre and Hospital about the
increasing levels of air pollution and noise pollution and gather information based on the
data they provided and write an article. With this, she gained varied perspectives into the
topic in question and was able to add increased credibility to her article. [Refer appendix 2]
B. News brief: Rotary awards; NBNK meeting and Red Cross Day
The intern was sent to a Rotary Award Function to cover the award ceremony. This was her
first site story; and it provided a journalist’s experience at such events and she was made
familiar with how journalists are treated and what is expected out of them. Language
barrier was a hindrance in better performance as the intern does not understand the
regional language of Karnataka completely and most of the speakers at the event spoke in
the same. She managed to get her article published as a news brief, though. [Refer appendix
3, 4 and 5]
C. Protest stories
1. Toll booth hike
The intern was sent to a political protest carried out by the opposition parties at the time,
against the hike in toll booths. This was a brilliant experience for the intern as there were
violent protests being carried out and quite a few arrests taking place. She was amidst
several other news-hungry journalists who were not ready to compromise on sharing their
information. Language barrier was again a hindrance in better performance. The intern
spoke to several police officers and local people to gain information on the proceedings of
the protest. Understanding speeches made by ministers who spoke only in the regional
10. language was slightly difficult but on interviewing several other people, the intern was able
to get good information. She was also exposed to the politics involved in media and it was
overall a good experience. [Refer appendix 6]
2. BMTC bus fares hike
The intern was asked to go to a peaceful march carried out by daily commuters and some
organizations against the hike of the BMTC bus fares. She spoke to several students who
were a part of the organizations and other protestors. This was comparatively easier than
the toll booth protest as the people at the site were cooperative and there was not much
confusion. [Refer appendix 7]
3. BMTC hike: 100 arrested
The intern was asked follow up on the peaceful protest carried out against the increase in
BMTC bus fares. She spoke to several members of the Bangalore Bus Prayaanikara Vedike.
There were a bunch of angry protesters who did not cooperate too well. This made it
difficult for the intern to get information and quotes but she spoke to the police force as
well and was able to get information regarding the arrests and quotes from different people
to write her article. [Refer appendix 8]
D. Hypothyroidism
The intern was asked to research on the increase in Hypothyroidism in women and talk to
doctors at the Metropolis Healthcare Ltd who released new studies conducted by them.
Technical terms were slightly difficult to keep up with while talking to them but it was a very
informative assignment. [Refer appendix 9]
II. HARDNEWS: CIVIL
A. New look for city in 2 years: CM
The intern was asked to go to the inauguration of an underpass which was being
inaugurated by Chief Minister, Siddaramaiah. Again, language barrier was a slight problem
but it was a pleasant experience. [Refer appendix 10]
B. Metro
The intern was asked to attend an interactive meeting with Mr. Pradeep Singh Kharola,
Managing Director, Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Ltd and FKCCI members and write an
article based off the discussions that took place. This was comparatively easier than other
tasks since everyone communicated in English and the intern was previously aware of what
was going on with the Bangalore Metro and so, she was able to ask Mr. Kharola quite a lot
of questions herself. [Refer appendix 11]
11. III. HARDNEWS: CRIME
A. News brief: House robbed near Jain Temple
The intern was asked to visit the site of the robbery and get details from the family who was
robbed and the police. [Refer appendix 12]
B. BMTC bus in serial accident
The intern was asked to go to the site of the bus accident and talk to the police, the injured
people and other commuters who were in the bus at the time of the accident. This was not
a very pleasant experience since it was the first time that the intern had to interact with
grieving victims but all in all, it was a different experience and she learnt how to handle such
situations while reporting. [Refer appendix 13]
IV. SPORTS
A. Football matches
The intern attended seven BDA football matches. It was a great experience for her as she
learnt several ways to write about a football match and several facts and technical terms
involved in football. She developed a keen interest in writing for sports while covering these
matches. [Refer appendix 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18 and 19]
B. Press conferences
The intern was asked to attend three press conferences – Muaythai India National
Championship conference, 1st Edition of the Coorg Escapede conference and the press
conference of the Puravankara 5 Star State Ranking Bandminton Tournament. There
weren’t any difficulties faced in covering these stories. It was a good experience to meet
different people and the intern gained more knowledge about these sports. [Refer appendix

12. CONCLUSION
In my one month of internship at Deccan Chronicle, I gained tremendous knowledge and
experience about journalism and all the topics my articles have covered. While reporting,
many a times, I faced language barriers and other competitive reporters. However, I figured
out ways to overcome these difficulties and learnt to be extra alert while doing my job. I
encountered various situations where people would generally lose their calmbut I learnt
that it won’t help my case in any way. I have enjoyed reporting and covering the stories
thoroughly. I also met many different people and learnt a lot from them and learnt how to
deal with situations and think on my feet. Overall, It was a wonderful all-rounded
experience.
