IDEI’S areas of work WATER FOR IRRIGATION FOR SMALLHOLDER FARMERS & OTHER USE SUSTAINABLE AGRICULTURAL PRACTICES
IDEI Technologies: Irrigation Treadle Pump It is a foot operated water lifting device that can irrigate small plots of land of small holders in regions that have higher water table (not deeper than 25 feet). Advantages: Low cost system with cost ranging from $30-50. This includes cost for the tube well and other equipment Replacing diesel pumps thereby saving fuel & reducing carbon emission. Each pump offsets 0.477 of CO2 emissions per year Portable and easy to maintain & repair Can be used to irrigate using ground and surface water sources Can irrigate up to 1 acre of land Average life of 8-10 years
IDEI Technologies: Irrigation About Low Cost Drip Systems These are Low Energy Water Application technologies. Drip enables slow and regular application of water directly to the roots of the plants through a network of economically designed plastic pipes and low discharge emitters. These are divisible and are therefore available in several ready-to-use packaged kits that includes Bucket Kit (BK), Family Nutrition Kit-FNK (20 square meter), Drum Kit, 100 square meter, Quarter Acre kit and Customized Drip. Advantages: Low cost and therefore can be afforded by the farmer. Cost ranges from $160-170 per acre Cost of FNK/BK is $4-5, Drum Kit is $12 and Quarter acre kit is $100 In case of customised drip kit it could be customized as per the size & shape of the ield Can be installed for all kind of crops Could be used for field size ranging from 20 sq m oneards
IDEI: Sustainable Agricultural Practices About Integrating Poor into Market Systems (IPMAS) IDEI is identifying such gaps that would, with minimum effort, enable a smallholder farmer to access market systems. The project aspires to enhance the negotiating capacities of the farmers in the supply chain. Current Focus on three areas in the following ways:
System of Rice Intensification Garnered learning’s on SRI and implemented as a project in parts of Bengal, Orissa and Bihar Successfully implemented with over 5, 000 farmers Highlights of the programme are as follows: 60-100% increase in the yield Reduces seeds usage by 80% Reduces use of fertilizer by 70 % Requires less water for cultivation Small & marginal farmers reported having sufficient food grains for their household consumption through the year
Geographic Reach: India
IDEI Outreach IDEI has reached out to over 1.2 Million small holder farm families, thereby impacting more than six million people in India. Outreach in Millions

Social Returns on Investment (Environment) With the use of treadle pumps, diesel worth 602.8 Million Litres has been saved and carbon emissions reduced by 2.23 million tCO2 eq. This amounts to USD 482 Million and 15.6 Million respectively. Diesel cost: $0.8/litre Carbon Emission: $7 per ton
With the use of drip kits water worth 5.2 Billion Cu Mter has been saved and electricity worth 700 Million kWh. This amounts to USD 5.2 Billion and 10.5 Million respectively Water savings calculated @ $0.001 per ltr Electricity savings calculated @ $0.015 per kWh Social Returns on Investment (Environment)
