Students at the "Gheorghe Munteanu Murgoci" HIGH SCHOOL participated in a series of activities to mark the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination. Students in grades 9 and 10 debated issues around discrimination based on race, ethnicity, religion, age, and disability. They discussed direct discrimination, which treats someone unfavorably due to attributes, and indirect discrimination, which uses unreasonable rules that unfairly impact some groups. At the end, students shared unique messages promoting inclusion and opposing discrimination in society.

“Disability studies introduces a disability reading to a range of subject matter. We prod people to examine how disability as a category was created to serve certain ends and how the category has been institutionalized in social practices and intellectual conventions.
Disability studies' project is to weave disabled people back into the fabric of society, thread by thread, theory by theory. It aims to expose the ways that disability has been made exceptional and to work to naturalize disabled people - remake us as full citizens whose rights and privileges are intact, whose history and contributions are recorded, and whose often distorted representations in art, literature, film, theater, and other forms of artistic expression are fully analyzed.

Father Antonios Papanikolaou grew up in poverty in Greece and felt called to help others as a priest. After becoming a priest, he was assigned to a parish with high rates of juvenile crime, drug trafficking, and school absenteeism. He established Ark of the World in 1998 to help abandoned and at-risk children by providing for their basic needs, education, and social integration. Currently, Ark of the World cares for over 200 children of various backgrounds, helping them develop hope and potential through the support of volunteers and donors. Father Antonios' goal is to keep children with their mothers by also providing assistance to homeless and low-income mothers.

Being in a diverse environment allows one to distinguish the similarities and differences between oneself and others around them. Within the module overview, it stated, The United States was founded on principles of equality and opportunity for all citizens, but in practice, some groups of citizens have encountered different treatment, which has resulted in less-than-equal opportunities (Hobbs, 2015). In grade schools, most children without intellectual disabilities often see themselves as “normal” students. Students have questioned the inclusion of persons with disabilities in public schools, but should they not be given the same chance as others? We all are humans. However, some students do not understand diversity or how to accept some of the physical differences such as varying abilities. Because of that, students with learning disabilities may face many barriers because of discriminatory practices and beliefs (LDA0, 2020). It is important, not only for children but for adults, to understand and accept diversity in any form whether it is physical or social. Furthermore, diversity among people with varying abilities will be examined in depth through the four lenses of general education. We will explore the history of intellectual disabilities, some causes of intellectual disabilities how persons with disabilities differ in values and culture, and most of all how the disabilities affect the persons daily within society.
HISTORY
Many years ago, there was a stigma of persons with intellectual disabilities. People feared them and often mistreated them because they were different. They were called many names that belittled them and degraded them as humans. They were placed in centers secluded from the world. During the 19th century, institutions were developed, and influential people adopted the concept of care and education provisions for persons with intellectual disabilities. The idea of the institutions was not all great, yet it carried on to the 20th century. In 1966, there was a publication of a photograph album that was very dehumanizing, displaying intellectually handicapped and mentally ill persons in isolation. “They showed pictures of adults and children naked or dressed in inappropriate clothes of the cheapest quality; closed in isolated rooms without handles” (Zakrzewska-Manterys,2015). Years later Dr. Wolf Wolfensberger exposed the idea of Normalization. Dr. Wolfensberger’s Normalization principle concentrated on improvement within the lives of the people who were known as mentally retarded. Normalization began in Scandinavian countries but Wolfensberger decided to take on the principle and teach about it amongst the North American people. From the years 1945 until 1975 were called the “Golden Age”. This during the segregation police which fostered the acceptance, social integration, and inclusion of persons with disabilities (Zakrzewska-Manterys, 2015). Education is the best way to remember this genocide and prevent it from happening again. STOP BULLYING - Project by The Romanian Team

Being in a diverse environment allows one to distinguish the similarities and differences between oneself and others around them. Within the module overview, it stated, The United States was founded on principles of equality and opportunity for all citizens, but in practice, some groups of citizens have encountered different treatment, which has resulted in less-than-equal opportunities (Hobbs, 2015). In grade schools, most children without intellectual disabilities often see themselves as “normal” students. Students have questioned the inclusion of persons with disabilities in public schools, but should they not be given the same chance as others? We all are humans. However, some students do not understand diversity or how to accept some of the physical differences such as varying abilities. Because of that, students with learning disabilities may face many barriers because of discriminatory practices and beliefs (LDA0, 2020). It is important, not only for children but for adults, to understand and accept diversity in any form whether it is physical or social. Furthermore, diversity among people with varying abilities will be examined in depth through the four lenses of general education. We will explore the history of intellectual disabilities, some causes of intellectual disabilities how persons with disabilities differ in values and culture, and most of all how the disabilities affect the persons daily within society.
HISTORY
Many years ago, there was a stigma of persons with intellectual disabilities. People feared them and often mistreated them because they were different. They were called many names that belittled them and degraded them as humans. They were placed in centers secluded from the world. During the 19th century, institutions were developed, and influential people adopted the concept of care and education provisions for persons with intellectual disabilities. The idea of the institutions was not all great, yet it carried on to the 20th century. In 1966, there was a publication of a photograph album that was very dehumanizing, displaying intellectually handicapped and mentally ill persons in isolation. “They showed pictures of adults and children naked or dressed in inappropriate clothes of the cheapest quality; closed in isolated rooms without handles” (Zakrzewska-Manterys,2015). Years later Dr. Wolf Wolfensberger exposed the idea of Normalization. Dr. Wolfensberger’s Normalization principle concentrated on improvement within the lives of the people who were known as mentally retarded. Normalization began in Scandinavian countries but Wolfensberger decided to take on the principle and teach about it amongst the North American people. From the years 1945 until 1975 were called the “Golden Age”. This during the segregation police which fostered the acceptance, social integration, and inclusion of persons with disabilities (Zakrzewska-Manterys, 2015). - 3. The International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination is observed annually on the 21st March. This year, it has been honoured with a series of activities that took place in our school. Many students from 9th and 10th grade have participated in this activity.
- 4. We’ve come together to spread awareness.
- 5. Our students planned a series of debates concerning discrimination and its consequences, which can affect people unfairly because of their : - Race - Ethnicity - Religion - Age - Disability

- 7. Andrei Bădescu talks social exclusion of victims of discrimination.
- 8. Ionescu Lucia and Chiriac Paula discuss about victimization.
- 9. Iulia Gluga and Izabela Mihai bring another very important problem into observation and consideration: harrassment.
- 10. Cabaua Florin presents religious discrimination.
- 11. Leopea Adelina, Mocanu Alina and Vapor Mihaela inform us about racial and ethnical discrimination
- 12. Rusu Oana and Ioniță Andreea raise awareness about the notion of discriminatory restriction.
- 13. Discrimination in history is brought to us by Pîrvu Elena and Iulian Banea.
- 14. Sheila Rustem and Andreea Țiuleanu on about indirect and direct discrimination.
- 15. Matters such as types of discrimination have been discussed. We found out that discrimination can be : - DIRECT – treating someone less favorably because of certain attributes of who they are; - INDIRECT - occurs when there is an unreasonable rule or policy that is the same for everyone but has an unfair effect on people who share a particular attribute.
- 17. GET TO KNOW US. At the end of the activity, every student freely presented their unique message and opinion regarding discrimination in today’s society.
