Tunnel management and Safety
The A3 Hindhead road scheme, which completes the dual carriageway link between London and
Portsmouth in the U.K, officially opened on 27 July 2011. Mott MacDonald was responsible for
design and construction supervision of the twin bore tunnel. Mott MacDonald ITS team designed
and delivered a full suite of ITS. Notably the Hindhead tunnel incorporates many features which
enhance road user safety. These include:

4. Data Communication Networks

Example ITS communication network design for M80 Corridor wide project
Mott MacDonald was responsible for the design of the passive (roadside) communications
network that supports the deployment of over 30,000 roadside devices. The transmission
network consists of fibre and copper cable and transmission equipm ent with its supporting
infrastructure of ducts, power supplies, cabinets and approximately 150 transmission stations
located on the national motorway and trunk road network. Our role encompassed a number of
different tasks for which we are responsible, namely:
• Design and/or review of all upgrade schemes where the provision of
• new motorway communications is required;
• Ensure compliance of all designs to standards;
• Maintenance of national records for the communications network;
• Management of existing copper cable and optical fibre networks;
• Development of models to establish the relationships between roadside devices and

Tolling systems
Mott MacDonald was commissioned to design an upgrade to the existing Dartford River
Crossing Toll System to accommodate the new Charging Order requirements. We delivered a
Toll project in record time to achieve Government objectives whilst minimising traffic effects. A
key element of our role was to manage the design, development and implementation of the new
systems elem ents, and also to conduct detailed testing to ensure compatibility with existing
systems.

Urban traffic management and control
Mott MacDonald was appointed to install an Urban Traffic Management and Control database at
South West Regional Control Centre (SWRCC) as part of the U.K Highways Agency’s Integrated
Network Management programme.
The initial phase integrated data from the National Traffic Control Centre (NTCC), regional
motorway network and Bristol City Council (BCC). The UTMC Common Database provides
stakeholders across all the organisation with a consolidated map-based view of traffic
management information across the South West regional network.
The South West Regional Urban Traffic Management and Control delivers operational benefits
to stakeholders enabling the development of operational and technical processes based on an
integrated view of the network. It will help the Highways Agency to identify areas of the
integrated network which require a multi-agency approach to traffic management.
Traffic information data from all participants is combined into a single user interface for effective
management across the network irrespective of the owners of the infrastructure.
Travel Information Systems
Mott MacDonald was appointed to manage site, interface with the client and to commission
stations of a real time Customer Information System, CIS. This involved the replacement of the
current ageing CIS at over 350 stations and replace with an automatic real time system to
present the travelling public with up-to-date information in a clear and concise form. The system
is managed from four control centres located in strategic positions around the Network.
Mott MacDonald delivered a large scale
automatic real time customer information
system in the rail sector. We surveyed each station and graded the current equipment, following which we advised the
areas of replacement, enhancem ent and repair before using this information in a Tender of
Works. The project was challenging in nature and the sites we spread far and wide and some
very remote. The software has to address various issue from circular train movements to
duplicate train references. Both Contractors delivered a system which not only functions but
addresses the working nature of the areas and the irregularities with the rail network.
The project was successfully completed and Mott MacDonald was responsible for ascertaining
that the systems installed met the clients requirements. The implementation of the CIS now
provides improved information for customer on all stations and the feed back to date has been
positive.

6. Parking Guidance and Management Systems
Mott MacDonald was commissioned to deliver a car park guidance system with 28 car park
information signs within the historic City of Edinburgh, plus 27 strategic message signs across
the Edinburgh area. We delivered a traffic management system that provided the operations
and control centre with facilities for automatic and manual sign setting. The public web-site
provides real-time car park occupancy and VMS settings, in addition to accidents, incidents,
roadwork’s and events.
GPRS communications was used to exchange commands and data with the new roadside, with
real-time occupancy data was captured from the legacy car park systems. Mott MacDonald
delivered a full end-to-end urban traffic management system with support for legacy systems.
Asset management systems

system for the Historic City of Edinburgh. Mott MacDonald has delivered national information management systems that has improved
how U.K road authorities, police and other organisations share and disseminate information on
road conditions. Our systems have become the central service for logging operational data from
multiple systems and provides detailed network management information.
