Twenty years after Vatican II the Catholic Church seemed like a boat adrift without a rudder. Cardinal Ratzinger, who would later be ordained Pope Benedict, expressed his concerns and frustrations with the lack of direction in the Church and the misconceptions of Vatican II in interviews with Vittorio Messori, an Italian journalist, who would publish them in the Ratzinger Report.
Ratzinger discusses the frustration of many in the hierarchy of the Church on how so few of the faithful, both critics and champions of Vatican II, actually read and understood the decrees of the Council. Pope John Paul II and Cardinal Ratzinger saw this a lack of catechesis, so shortly after the 1985 publication of the Ratzinger Report, the Catholic Church started the process of drafting a new Catholic Catechism, soliciting input from over a dozen cardinals, bishops, and theologians. Ratzinger compared the post-Vatican II Church to a “construction site where the blueprint had been lost but everyone continues to build according to his taste.”

The Catholic Church has firmly held teachings against abortion and most forms of birth control. The Church believes that abortion is the taking of an innocent human life and is strictly forbidden. It also opposes most contraceptives, as articulated in Pope Paul VI's 1968 encyclical Humanae Vitae. This encyclical reaffirmed the Church's view that artificial contraception is morally wrong. First and foremost, we are tasked with protecting the assets our clients entrust to us. We manage this patrimony predominantly by acquiring and holding fixed-income securities or placing funds in money market accounts. In addition, we provide our customers with payment services. However, we do not serve business customers, and we do not provide loans out of our deposit base, and barely offer loans at all. We also do not engage in financial transactions such as hedges or swaps with our clients.
2012 was a successful year for the IOR and for our clients.
The IOR posted earnings of EUR 86.6 m, which allowed us to contribute EUR 54.7 m towards the budget of the Holy See, while transferring EUR 31.9 m to our general operating risk reserves.
And we are conservative: in 2012 we had a balance sheet total of EUR 5 bn in assets, with equity of EUR 769 m. On an operating level, we stand on very solid foundations.

It has been known for quite some time that a number of cardinals and bishops, both in Rome and abroad, are—to put it mildly—uncomfortablewith the way Pope Francis’s pontificate is unfolding.
Well, this week it all spilled out into the open when it was unveiled that several cardinals—including three top Vatican officials (Cardinals Pell, Müller and Sarah)—wrote a letter to the Pope that basically criticized theway he is running the Synod of Bishops.
One should be magnanimous and give these birds credit for being honest with the Pope and telling him their concerns. (They were not happy that the public found out, which is another story.) But one should also be aware that, at least some of these prelates, are active ringleaders of an opposition to Francis.

The Second Vatican Council
The Catholic Church has firmly held teachings against abortion and most forms of birth control. The Church believes that abortion is the taking of an innocent human life and is strictly forbidden. It also opposes most contraceptives, as articulated in Pope Paul VI's 1968 encyclical Humanae Vitae. This encyclical reaffirmed the Church's view that artificial contraception is morally wrong. While some Catholics disagree with these teachings, the Church leadership continues to prohibit abortion and restrict the use of contraception based on its theological and moral doctrines. These stances have put the Church at odds with secular views
How It Came to Be: The Origins of the Vatican City
The Vatican City originated as territories governed by the papacy known as the Papal States over 1100 years. In 1861, the Papal States were annexed by the newly formed Kingdom of Italy, confining the Pope within the Vatican. This standoff ended in 1929 with the Lateran Treaty establishing Vatican City as an independent state. The Holy See, distinct from Vatican City, is the episcopal see of Rome and possesses international legal personality, while Vatican City is the small territory it governs.

This Annual Report explains our mission, our activities, our corporate governance and our ongoing reform program. We also touch on the most important developments at the IOR in 2013, from January to August this year.
The Annual Report seeks to contribute to the transparency which the Catholic Church, our customers, our correspondent banks, our authorities and the public rightfully expect.
The IOR forms part of the Holy See. We serve the global mission of the Catholic Church by safeguar- ding part of the patrimony of the Holy See, religious orders, and other organisations, large and small, within the global family of the Catholic Church.
First and foremost, we are tasked with protecting the assets our clients entrust to us. We manage this patrimony predominantly by acquiring and holding fixed-income securities or placing funds in money market accounts. In addition, we provide our customers with payment services. However, we do not serve business customers, and we do not provide loans out of our deposit base, and barely offer loans at all. We also do not engage in financial transactions such as hedges or swaps with our clients.
2012 was a successful year for the IOR and for our clients.
The IOR posted earnings of EUR 86.6 m, which allowed us to contribute EUR 54.7 m towards the budget of the Holy See, while transferring EUR 31.9 m to our general operating risk reserves.
And we are conservative: in 2012 we had a balance sheet total of EUR 5 bn in assets, with equity of EUR 769 m. On an operating level, we stand on very solid foundations.

3) The episcopal and presbyteral ministry makes Christ's ministry present by proclaiming the Gospel, bringing people together in community, forgiving sins, and celebrating the Eucharist, which actualizes Christ's one sacrifice.

It has been known for quite some time that a number of cardinals and bishops, both in Rome and abroad, are—to put it mildly—uncomfortablewith the way Pope Francis’s pontificate is unfolding.
Well, this week it all spilled out into the open when it was unveiled that several cardinals—including three top Vatican officials (Cardinals Pell, Müller and Sarah)—wrote a letter to the Pope that basically criticized theway he is running the Synod of Bishops.
One should be magnanimous and give these birds credit for being honest with the Pope and telling him their concerns. (They were not happy that the public found out, which is another story.) But one should also be aware that, at least some of these prelates, are active ringleaders of an opposition to Francis.
National Cathedral Strategic plan 2012-2014

Hierarchy of church documents

Both clergy and laity are responsible for spreading the Gospel's values within society.

Fabular Frames and the Four Ratio Problem
Digital, interactive art showing the struggle of a society in providing for its present population while also saving planetary resources for future generations. Spread across several frames, the art is actually the rendering of real and speculative data. The stereographic projections change shape in response to prompts and provocations. Visitors interact with the model through speculative statements about how to increase savings across communities, regions, ecosystems and environments. Their fabulations combined with random noise, i.e. factors beyond control, have a dramatic effect on the societal transition. Things get better. Things get worse. The aim is to give visitors a new grasp and feel of the ongoing struggles in democracies around the world.
Stunning art in the small multiples format brings out the spatiotemporal nature of societal transitions, against backdrop issues such as energy, housing, waste, farmland and forest. In each frame we see hopeful and frightful interplays between spending and saving. Problems emerge when one of the two parts of the existential anaglyph rapidly shrinks like Arctic ice, as factors cross thresholds. Ecological wealth and intergenerational equity areFour at stake. Not enough spending could mean economic stress, social unrest and political conflict. Not enough saving and there will be climate breakdown and ‘bankruptcy’. So where does speculative design start and the gambling and betting end? Behind each fabular frame is a four ratio problem. Each ratio reflects the level of sacrifice and self-restraint a society is willing to accept, against promises of prosperity and freedom. Some values seem to stabilise a frame while others cause collapse. Get the ratios right and we can have it all. Get them wrong and things get more desperate.
