1. Ball Handling
Every basketball player needs to be able to dribble
equally with both hands and switch between hands
without having to think about it. Using 2 balls, weighted
balls, and practicing at a high intensity level will give
your player the confidence they need to succeed during
the game.
2. Layups
The ability to finish layups while going full speed down
the court or in a crowded space while using either hand
is important to a players development and progression.
3. Passing/Catching
Passing and catching is a key fundamental skill that is
often overlooked when developing a basketball player.
Using high speed hand eye coordination drills is a great
way to improve these skills.
4. Shooting
Starting with the proper shooting form and practicing it
religiously will help the player increase accuracy, power
and confidence.
5. Offensive Footwork
Constant repetition of correct footwork will help your
player become more explosive and efficient on the
offensive side of the ball. Having great footwork will
translate into better ball handling and an overall better
offensive game.
6. Defensive Footwork
You don't have to be the fastest player on the court if
you have great defensive footwork. Being able to
remain in a good defensive stance will increase lateral
quickness and defensive agility.
7. Offensive IQ
Your excellent physical fundamentals are only put to
good use if you can understand how to use them during
in game situations. Knowing when to shoot/ pass/
dribble is very important as you are always one step
ahead of the defense and therefore can dictate where
the play should go.
8. Defensive IQ
Players need to be confident on the defensive side of
the ball and always try to anticipate where the ball is
going. You also need to know that you have to stay in
your stance as you become quicker defensively.
Knowing how to cut off angles so that your player can’t
get around you is the next step!
9. Hard Work and Repetition
Just because you have achieved your goal of becoming
a better basketball player doesn't mean you do not need
to work hard at maintaining your skill set. Stay in the
gym after practice and find pick-up games to continue
mastering your craft.
10. Be Coachable
Players at every level can always learn something new.
Listen to your coach and be willing to try what they are
asking of you, you never know one little suggestion may
take you the next level!
