Linux is an open source operating system and is freely distributable , cross platform operating
system based on UNIX that can be installed on PCs, laptops , servers, supercomputers and more.
It was developed in early 1990s.
It was released on September 17,1991 by LINUS TORVALDS.
Linux is not UNIX , but it is a UNIX like operating system. Linux system is derived from UNIX and it
is continuation of the basis of UNIX design.

FEATURESOFLINUX
•Multiuser capability: Multiple users can access the same system resources like memory, hard
disk, etc. But they have to use different terminals to operate.
•Multitasking: More than one function can be performed simultaneously by dividing the CPU
time intelligently.
•Portability: It means software can works on different types of hardware and supports
installation on any kind of hardware platform.
•Open Source: Linux code is freely available to all and is a community based
development project
FEATURES
Security: It provides security in three ways namely authenticating (by assigning
password and login ID), authorization (by assigning permission to read, write and
execute) and encryption (converts file into an unreadable format)
•Live CD/USB: Almost all Linux distros provide live CD/USB so that users can run/try it
without installing it.
•Graphical User Interface (X Window system): Linux is command line based OS but it
can be converted to GUI based by installing packages.
File System: Provides hierarchical file system in which files and directories are
arranged.

It is free operating system unlike windows which has to be purchased.
Once installed in system no antivirus is required .
Linux is highly secure system.
Linux based server could run non stop without a reboot for years .
Customization is easy you can customize any feature, add or delete any feature according to your
need.
INSTALLATIONOFLINUXOPERATINGSYSTEM
Installing Linux using USB stick
This is one of the easiest methods of installing Ubuntu or any distribution on your computer.
Follow the steps to install Ubuntu from USB.
Step 1) Download required files.
Download the .iso or the OS files on your computer from this link.
Step 2) Download Universal USB Installer.
Download free software like Universal USB installer to make a bootable USB stick.
Step 3) Select Distribution.
Select an Ubuntu Distribution form the dropdown to put on your USB
Select your Ubuntu iso file download in step 1.
Select the drive letter of USB to install Ubuntu and Press create button.
Step 4) Install Ubuntu.
Click YES to Install Ubuntu in USB.
Step 5) Check your window.
After everything has been installed and configured, a small window will appear Congratulations!
You now have Ubuntu on a USB stick, bootable and ready to go.
