due to the use of VAR
 Refs are now able to speak with all other officials around the pitch,
including the two linesmen, when issues need sorting out
 regular part of the game since the 2006 World Cup
9
7. Semi-Automated Offside
Technology (SAOT)
 Semi-automated offside technology used in FIFA World Cup 2022 in Qatar
 accurately determine in real-time whether an offside has occurred,
 relies on 12 cameras, track multiple data points on the ball and each player
50 times per second
 also uses a signal from a sensor in the ball to calculate their exact position
on the pitch
 video match officials pass it to the central referee
10
8. Video Evidence
 Video evidence has become an important tool for various leagues
 it allows ruling bodies to punish players retroactively if they fall afoul of the
rules
 only comes into play if the officials on the day miss something, however
11
9. Scouting Apps
 Scouts and coaches now can access pertinent data and key video footage
at their fingertips
 provide individual player-performance data after each match
 developed by football performance analysts, professional players
 tracks metrics of individual players- football data metrics, physical
performance metrics, and Football Intelligence metrics
 capture data on the distance covered at various speed thresholds, the
number of actions above 25km/h and the maximum speed displayed on
positional heat maps
 the phase of play, line-breaking events, receiving locations and pressure
applied to the player in possession of the ball
 WO/2013/017957-Method, system and apparatus for managing a football
match by minkovitch, Zvi
12
10. Wearable Technology
 Wearable technology - fitness trackers or smart-watches allow to keep track
of health metrics like heart rate or sleep patterns
 wearable technology & performance tracking voted by IFAB in 2015
 allows tracking of player-specific data, fitness information and can actually
help prevent certain health issues players are susceptible to, such as fatigue
and even illness.
 a bit of an entertainment factor as well
 it could help teams on a tactical level too
13
11. Hawk eye Camera
 12 Hawk-Eye cameras in stadium track ball & each player 50 times per second,
even if ball is 25 percent visible
 29 points of the body tracked for players, including limbs
 data sent to the central computer, analyzed by artificial intelligence software &
generate automated offside alerts and confirmed by video match officials
 The Hawk-Eye system (PCT application - PCT/GB2000/004507), in 1999 by Dr.
Paul Hawkins
 makes it possible to track the trajectory of balls in flight with a high degree of
accuracy.
 principle of triangulation using the visual images and timing data by high-
speed video cameras at six different locations at the area of play
 goal is detected at times when players are huddled together at the goal mouth
14
Contd…
 A ball travelling at 60mph (97kph) moves at one meter per video frame on
standard broadcast cameras which operate at 25 frames per second
 uses cameras that operate at 500 frames per second making it possible to
detect if a ball has crossed the goal line even for a fraction of a second.
 The Hawk-Eye brand and simulation licensed to Codemasters, the oldest
British video game developers.
15
12. Internet of Things (IoT)
