Learning
• Visualize them as concentric circles with AI —
the idea that came first — the largest, then
machine learning — which blossomed later, and
finally deep learning — which is driving today’s
AI explosion.
• Picking images of cats out of YouTube videos
was one of the first breakthrough
demonstrations of deep learning.
17
Naveed Anwar, AIT Solutions
Augmented Reality & Virtual Reality
• The foundation has been laid for catapulting AR
and VR to the general consumers with the release
of AR and VR hardware by the big name
companies, including Google and Microsoft.
• The release of the Oculus Rift was followed by
thousands of VR apps and games. More recently
HTC Vive has garnered a lot of attention.
• Pokémon Go, an AR game, exploded into the
scene, becoming the top grossing app in the US
in 13 hours. Nintendo’s market value went up by
$9 billion in 5 days.
18
Naveed Anwar, AIT Solutions

Naveed Anwar, AIT Solutions
Automation
• Automation is the use of various control systems for
operating equipment such as machinery, processes in
factories, switching on telephone networks, steering and
stabilization of ships, aircraft and other applications and
vehicles with minimal human intervention.
• iPhone manufacturer Foxconn will target full automation
of its Chinese factories by the end of this year.
23
Naveed Anwar, AIT Solutions
Automation
• Amazon’s robots automate the picking
and packing process at large
warehouses in a way that stands to help
Amazon become more efficient. Amazon
also uses other types of robots in its
warehouses, including large robotic
arms that can move large pallets of
Amazon inventory.
• Amazon said it had 15,000 robots
operating across 10 warehouses. In
2015, that number rose to 30,000, and
now Amazon has 45,000.
• Beyond the warehouse, Amazon is also
looking at automating other aspects of
its business. In December 2016, the
company announced it had made its first
delivery by an automated drone in the
UK.
24

Quantum Computing
27
• Quantum computing is a huge leap forward in computing
technology; they can solve problems that are
computationally too difficult for a classical computer like
genome sequencing, weather predictions, financial
forecasting, machine learning to name a few
• Classical computers can only process information in either
1s or 0s. In the quantum paradigm, those 1 and 0 bytes can
exist in two states (qubits) at once, allowing computations
to be performed in parallel.
• Quantum computers are not only more powerful than
anything built to date — they require special algorithms
capable of doing new things, and individuals with a
background in quantum physics.
