4. Summary
• Grey water from Boys Hostel of MCET is concentrated with
high levels of TDS, BOD and other minerals and oils. The
current project is to build and implement a phytoremediation
system to reduce the pollutant level and reduce toxicity. This
process would also have the potential to reduce cost,
infrastructure and would provide a cleaner and greener
environment.

5. Introduction
• The waste water sourced from SRM hotel Tada branch is recycled by natural process
called phytoremediation. In this process various species of plant varieties such as
Canna indica, Azolla pinnata, Pistia stratiotes , Cyprus papyrus, etc., these type of
plants are used to dissolve and digest the chemicals and solid matters present in grey
water.

6. Current Scenario
• Discharge of untreated sewage in water courses both surface
and ground waters is the most important water polluting
source in India. Out of about 38000 million litres per day of
sewage generated treatment capacity exists for only about
12000 million litres per day. Thus, there is a large gap between
generation and treatment of wastewater in India.

7. Current Scenario…
India accounts for 2.45% of land area and 4% of water
resources of the world but represents 16% of the world
population. Total utilizable water resource in the country has
been estimated to be about 1123 billion cubic metres (690 BCM
from surface and 433 BCM from ground), which is just 28% of
the water derived from precipitation.
About 85% (688 BCM) of water usage is being diverted for
irrigation, which may increase to 1072 BCM by 2050. Major
source for irrigation is groundwater. Annual groundwater
recharge is about 433 BCM of which 212.5 BCM used for
irrigation and 18.1 BCM for domestic and industrial use
(CGWB, 2019). By 2025, demand for domestic and industrial
water usage may increase to 29.2 BCM.

8. Current Scenario in Tamilnadu
• As per the statistical data from ENVIS Centre on Hygiene,
Sanitation, Sewage Treatment Systems and Technology,
sewage generation in urban areas and treatment capacity
available in Tamilnadu is 5599 MLD in urban areas and
installed treatment capacity is 1799.72 MLD. Therefore only
32% of water is being treated every day.
• As per the PWD, Chennai forecasting the required water for
Tamilnadu on 2050 will be 7590 MLD of water. With evident of
above statistical data we are in position to conserve water.

9. Water utilization in MCET Hostel
• MCET Boys hostel, present strength is 800
students. Per capita demand 135 Litres/Day
therefore total water required for boys hostel is
1,08,000 litres/day. About 80 percent of total
water consumption will be considered as
wastewater its around 56,400 litres/ day. The
wastewater treatment and recycling of water will
give more water conservation to our MCET
campus.
