Amnesty International (commonly known as Amnesty
and AI):
non-governmental organisation focused on human rights
over 4 million members and supporters around the world.

The stated objective of the organisation is "to
conduct research and generate action to prevent
and endgrave abuses of human rights, and to
demand justice for those whose rights have been
violated.”
4. When was it formed/founded?
Amnesty International was founded in London in
July 1961by English labour lawyer Peter Benenson.
According to his own account, he was travelling in
the London Underground on November 1960, when
he read that two Portuguese students from Coimbra
had been sentenced to seven years of
imprisonment.
5. When was it formed/founded?
In Portugal for allegedly "having drunk a toast to
liberty". Researchers have never traced the alleged
newspaper article in question. In 1960, Portugal
was ruled by the “Estado Novo” government of
António de Oliveira Salazar.
6. Logo:
The logo combines two recognisable images to
convey complex notions: barbed wire
communicates oppression, while a burning candle
evokes hope. It was inspired by the Chinese
proverb, “Better to light a candle than curse the
darkness”.
