INDUSTRIAL ANTENNA
APPLICATIONS
What is an antenna?
• A transducer which converts Guided EM waves into free space EM waves
and vice versa.
Why we need antenna in industrial applications?
• To establish a communication link between two radios or to acquire the
data from distant location
Industrial antenna applications
 Three basic type of antenna applications in
industries are
 SCADA (Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition)
systems
 Wireless communication
 Remote sensing
Industrial antenna applications
 SCADA:
 To transmit data from sensors and other devices to the
SCADA system, allowing operators to monitor and
control the infrastructure from a central location.
 Useful in the cases where human intervention is not
possible like nuclear reactor temperature monitor.
Industrial antenna applications
 Wireless Communication:
 To establish a communication link between two radio
devices wirelessly.
 Vehicle to vehicle communication, satellite
communication, radio devices communication and
industrial automation systems are some examples.
Industrial antenna applications
 Remote sensing:
 The process of detecting and monitoring the physical
characteristics of an area by measuring its reflected and
emitted radiation at a distance.
 Synthetic aperture radar, weather monitoring radar and
ground penetrating radar are examples for remote sensing
of agriculture land, land slides, deforestation etc.,.
Industrial antenna applications
 Factors to be consider for antenna selection:
 Frequency range
 Input Power level to antenna
 Gain
 Directionality
 Environmental factors
Industrial antenna applications
 Types of industrial antennas (based on radiation
pattern):
 Omni Directional antennas
 Directional antennas
 MIMO antenna arrays
Industrial antenna applications
Omni Directional antenna
radiation pattern

Helical antenna radiation pattern
(a) axial mode (b) normal mode
Isotropic radiation pattern
Industrial antenna applications
 Types of antennas:
 Dipole antennas
 Monopole antennas
 Helical antennas
 Sector antennas
 Panel antennas
 Parabolic dish
antennas
 Patch antenna
 Whip antennas
Industrial antenna applications
How to select antenna based on application?
 Frequency of operation
 Low frequency
 High frequency
 Bandwidth
 Low bandwidth
 High bandwidth
 Gain
 Power handling capability
 Directional Property based
 Environmental factors
