English (IBA HL - Literature) Dr B M Wells
Effort: Outstanding
Quality: 7
We completed the course by polishing the final piece of coursework before heading into a consolidated period of examination preparation. This included
doing a detailed study of the poetry of John Donne then revising selected poems of the Australian poet, Les Murray. The focus was on deepening
knowledge of these core texts and skilling the class with the expectations and nuances of the examination paper. In short, the aim has been to channel
all their knowledge and skills acquired over the IB Literature course in order to maximise their chances of success in the upcoming examination. All
while, hopefully, still enjoying the journey.
It has been an absolute delight to help guide Federico through the IB Literature course this year. He has a confidence and inner strength
that allows him to confront the various challenges of this course head on and with a boldness and gradually acquired retrospection that has
helped him fine-tune his analytical arguments. I shall miss his engaging contributions to class discussions. He now has the skills and knows
the strategy but would be wise to take full advantage of the revision period to fine tune his content knowledge and build his text specific
vocabulary.

This term we have been completing work on the Text in Translation essay that is submitted as coursework and revising for Papers 1 and 2.
Federico has continued to make good progress this term and has produced some impressive writing. I would still urge him to make sure his
analysis covers as much of a range of detail as possible and not to shy away from commenting on aspects of form. He needs always to bear
in mind that form IS meaning. I know he will aim high and I hope he will continue to complete practice questions right up to the exams.

This term has seen the students complete their course work and finish their syllabus. The topic completed this term was Global Warming and there
have been opportunities to go over earlier work in connection with the content of this term. Course work has taken a little longer than expected which
impacts on revision time in class but it has been important to make sure all the students have submitted a piece of work for all the assessment
requirements. The remainder of the lessons have been put down to consolidating knowledge and examination style questions.
Federico joined the class late in the day but has never looked back and settled in immediately. He always made invaluable contributions to
any discussions that went on and had much to say. In the last year he made a decision to really learn the work and demonstrated that he
could achieve some excellent marks under examination conditions. I hope he learns the remainder of the topics as well as he did the ones
for the Trials because he should then gain excellent overall marks. I would like to thank him for his contributions and his humour over the
last two years as this has been a constant source of encouragement to others as well as myself. It has been a complete delight to teach him
and I wish Federico all the best in the direction he wants to go next year.

Pupils began this term with Trial examinations. Since then, they have undertaken an intensive revision programme. Every week, in accordance with the
timetable given to them at the start of the term, they have either written an essay in test conditions or answered a factual test. We have used our other
lessons to revise a wide range of topics.
Federico began the term with a (low) 7 in the Trial examinations, and his progress since then suggests that a 7 this summer is within his
grasp. He has strong subject knowledge, and he creates convincing written arguments. To improve from here, he needs to: a) fill the
remaining gaps in his knowledge; and b) ensure that his essays cover all the major points raised by a question, as his work hitherto has
occasionally suffered from important omissions. Teaching Federico has been a pleasure, and I wish him all the best in this summer's
examinations and beyond.

Following the Trial Examinations we have been following a departmental revision programme. Students have had 1 test lesson, comprising either an
unseen essay or factual test, then 1 revision lesson an opportunity to build notes or ask questions about aspects of which they are unsure, as well as
gain feedback from essays. This scheme of work has been arranged so that it covers all relevant parts of the syllabus, hoping to hit as many likely
questions as possible in the time remaining.
Federico has remained an attentive and able student. His work in recent months has suggested that on a good day he is capable of achieving
a 7. Though without thorough preparation this could slip down to a 6. He cannot therefore rest easy. He must ensure that he concentrates
hard on revising for the History paper, making sure that he covers enough material to enable him to answer a full range of answers.
Reflecting on the past month's essays will be helpful. It has been a pleasure teaching Federico over the past few years and I hope that his life
beyond Malvern is happy and prosperous.

Following the trials the class have worked on improving their scores by practising past papers.
Super effort recently from Federico following his disappointing trial result. He has taken every opportunity to improve upon his scores and
is well aware of those topics which he needs to spend most time on during the vacation. He really must not rely on the formula booklet if
he wants a good result. I will provide him with resources to support him during his revision at home. I wish him every success in his career
post Malvern.

For most of this term we have been focusing on the Ethics module of the course, considering normative theories and applied ethics. Latterly we have
returned to the set text, Descartes' Meditations, to revise and consolidate our critical work.
Federico continues to demonstrate his aptitude and ability: he is quick to assimilate new ideas, good at retaining material and deploying it
in his answers, and able to apply a critical skill to his analysis of the set text. He produced a pleasing performance in this term's
examinations, though it was perhaps a shade below what I might have expected, and I am confident that he will give good account of
himself in the IB papers. I would simply encourage him to revise and consolidate thoroughly: i would also like to see him giving due
weight to contrary arguments so as to ensure that he gives as full a picture as possible of the range of views.
Philosophy Mrs E Brown
Effort: Very good
Quality: 6
This half of term has been spent planning answers to past Philosophy of Religion questions and preparing 'Unseen' paper responses in preparation for
the final IB examinations.
Federico continues to work hard at grasping the full range of demands required to achieve a high standard in the Philosophy IB course. He
has now completed the challenging task of setting out his own view of philosophical activity and has received feedback on this work. It is
important that he continues to push his thinking in response to specific feedback to ensure that his ideas are fully developed and coherent.
In lessons Federico engages productively with the material, making some excellent suggestions about how to approach past questions. He
has also successfully identified gaps in his understanding and is using the textbook to broaden his knowledge. I have thoroughly enjoyed
teaching Federico and I wish him every success in the final examinations: he certainly deserves to succeed.

Theory of Knowledge Mr P J Gray
Effort: Very good
The class have brought their Theory of Knowledge course to an end this term with the final assessment: the internally-assessed Presentation to class,
worth one third of their overall grade. Paperwork is now complete and their externally-assessed Prescribed Essays (accounting for two-thirds of their
grade) submitted. It is to be hoped that this work, together with their Extended Essay grade, is rewarded in the summer with some useful bonus points to
support their university applications.
Federico finished off his Theory of Knowledge course with an excellent presentation on the cultural ethical systems. The talk showed a
good understanding ToK concepts such as, shared ethical knowledge can be a product of both reason and emotion and, though both have
their place, each has to be continually tested against different paradigms.
I hope he enjoyed the course; he certainly proved to be very able at it.
Tutor Mr R E Allen
It is encouraging to see that Federico has finished the term with his best set of effort grades this year and the quality marls suggest that he
on the cusp of a very strong performance in the final examinations. Federico is not the sort of student who needs to be chased or cajoled
and he can be relied upon to work to the best of his abilities in these final stages of revision. I will reserve my valedictory comments on him
until next term and for the moment will just wish him good fortune in his revision and in May.
House Mr D J Eglin
These reports make very pleasing reading. I think these are Federico’s best effort grades to date and his teachers seem to feel he could be on
for a really good score in the IB. Fingers crossed! I am sure that he will use the Easter break incredibly effectively and return well prepared
for the challenges ahead.
It has been great to see him out on the football field this term. He has been a stalwart of the 2nd XI in central defence and his cool head at
the heart of defence was critical in the House football success. Well done for a really positive term, Federico! Not long to go now…
