Sesam (a Tree) seed. Sesam
seed is considered most
important in performing
Yagna and Charity. Applying
Tilak on forehead has been a
tradition Sanatan Dharma.
Terminology

4. Tilak
◦ The tilak is worn every day by sadhus and pious household, and on special occasions
like weddings and religious rituals.
◦ A tilak is also applied by a priest during a visit to the temple as a sign of the deity’s
blessing, for both men and women.
◦ Tilak marks are applied by hand or with a metal stamp.
◦ They might be made of ash from a sacrificial fire, sandalwood paste, turmeric, cow
dung, clay, charcoal, or red lead.
◦ In addition to its religious symbolism, the tilak has a cooling effect on the forehead
and this can assist in concentration and meditation.

5. Importance of Tilak
◦ Atharva Upnisad-
Anyone who marks his body with the tilak which resembles the lotus feet of lord hari
becomes dear to the paramatma. He becomes fortunate and attains liberation.
◦ Brahmaratra-
One should meditate on me by chanting Om and should mark his body with vertical
tilak daily. Anyone who marks thus attains sayujya liberation.

6. Reason for applying tilak to the forehead
◦ Tilak meaning – So long as we are attached to Maya (The Great Illusion), it is advisable
to worship the sagun (Materialised) form of Parameshwar (The Supreme God)
◦ Applying a tilak in the mid-brow region to Parameshwar dwelling there generates
devotion and bhav, and imparts Shanti
.

7. Methods to apply tilak or mudra
1. Urdhwapundra: One or more vertical lines drawn on the forehead are called Urdhwapundra.
Soil from the places sanctified by Shrivishnu or from the banks of Holy rivers like Ganga,
or gopichandan (white clay ) can be used for drawing Urdhvapundra.
2.Tripundra: Three lines drawn horizontally on the forehead with bhasma (Holy ash) are called
Tripundra.
◦ A tilak mudra (Symbol or a sign) is drawn with sandal-wood paste.
◦ Women should use their ring finger to apply kumkum [saffron] to their forehead, and the
middle finger to apply it to other women or men

8. Shaiva marks
◦ In general Shaiva tilaka is made of ash
coming from burned wood, cow dung or
incense. The traditon of ash goes back to
stories that tell how Shaiva would smear his
body with ash taken from cremation sites
and so today shaivas mark their bodies with
holy ash. In general, amongst shaivas, the as
rigid as it is in the Vaishnava schools. Here
are the most common Shaiva patterns.

10. Scientific and Logical reasons
◦ A logical reason behind putting Tilak on forehead by Hindus have positive affects. As
per Hindu literature, There are many Chakras in human body which are energy points
from where human gets energy and order to go ahead. Initially, there are 7 most
important chakras. They are located at different physical counterparts of the major
plexuses of arteries, veins and nerves. Chakras are part of the subtle body, and are
the meeting points of the subtle (non-physical) energy channels, named as Nadis.
◦ Nadis are channels in the subtle body through which the life force (prana), or vital
energy moves. Within these chakra, there is one Ajna chakra has major significance.
The Ajna chakra is positioned in the mid directly behind the center of the forehead. Its
position, is between two eyebrow region that is called as Ajna or Agya Chakra also.
at the position of the "third eye". Putting Tilak on Ajna Chakra keeps it always cool,
control the enrage, degeneration, disorder, sexual desire and lust etc. Applying Tilak
with sandal wood keeps the mind and body in control.

11. Different categories
1. Some devotees are very staunch and do tilak under any circumstances.
2. Some devotees do tilak chandlo while doing pooja but remove it as they go out at
school, college, business or any social function.
If we ask such people that why they did not have tilak on their forehead? Then they
give smart reply that they washed their face so it got erased. But if we do a
postmortem of this answer, there could be different reasons.
3. Spme feel very shy when they are before public. Some feel that someone will pass
comments on them and they will be looked upon orthodox.
4. Some people think that they are not sincere in following the commands of
tradition/commands of lord and they put this mark on their head, then it would not
be fair,
-so these are very common mentalities.

12. ◦ Person who feels shy, they should look upon commands of lord.
◦ A person who joins army feels proud and honoured to have the symbols and dress of Army on
his body.
◦ Likewise , one should think that it is my lords command so I must have tilak/chandlo on my
forehead. It is the prime symbol of my devotion towards my beloved lord who looks after me in
all walks of my life ad at the time of my death , he will take me to his divine abode
Akshardham(HEAVEN).
◦ SHOULD HAVE THIS TYPE OF RATIONAL THINKING , THEN YOU’LL NOT FEEL SHY.
