The colors and design of each uniform has been selected to convey symbolic and literal information about the individual who wears it. In the military, the dress uniform uses saturated colors, is symmetrically balanced, and has a high degree of contrast. These aesthetic choices were made to convey strength, authority, and status within the hierarchy. On the other hand, the combat uniform uses subdued earth tones, is not concerned with symmetry, and employs low contrast. These choices were made to minimize the wearer’s visibility, for field utility, and to limit distinctions between the soldiers, conveying a “we are in this together” attitude essential for any team to be most effective.
Assignment:
Please search the internet for three examples of unusual or interesting uniforms and analyze their formal and symbolic characteristics.
