Editor's Notes

  • #2 Halie
  • #3 Halie - The Parliament of India is located in New Delhi, so many governmental officials live in the area, which is located in the northern part of India. In Mumbai, the Reserve Bank of India and the National Stock Exchange of India is located there. Mumbai only covers 6% of land in India, yet 13 million people live there making it the 2nd most populace city in the world. World famous Hindi film industry, Bollywood is in Mumbai.(On the map  upper east half of India along the coast)Other important cities include Pune – several historical landmarks, Chennai, which is known for its automobile and IT industry, and then Kolkata and Bangalore – which have renowned educational institutions.Since it is surrounded by the Indian Ocean on 3 sides there are several sea ports and waterways. This, though, also makes the country susceptible to hurricanes and tsunamis.India is set-up like America. Have the capital Delhi + 28 states with their own local government, and then 6 union territories.Since India is so large – the landscape ranges from mountains in the north with the Himalayas to rolling plains along the Ganges in the east, deserts in the west, and the upland plain in the south with the Deccan Plateau.

  • #5 Emily
  • #6 Emily
  • #7 Emily - Population below the poverty line = 12%
  • #8 Halie - Both poor and middle class families live in slums. Either the slums will triple or vanish in the next 25 years. 60% of Mumbai lives in slums. Causes of the high level of poverty can be attributed to its history under British rule, its large population, low literacy rate, societal structure including the Caste System and the role of women, dependence on agriculture, and the economic policies adopted after its independence. Since the 1950s theIndian government and non-governmental organizations have initiated several programs to alleviate poverty, including subsidizing food and other necessities, increased access to loans, improving agricultural techniques and price supports, and promoting education and family planning. These measures have helped eliminate famines, cut absolute poverty levels by more than half, and reduced illiteracy and malnutrition.
  • #9 HalieSlums of Mumbai – contaminates water  not clean to drink, but only water supply  causes illness and diseases.India suffers from poor infrastructure – crumbling roads and inadequate transportation.Power Blackouts can be expected on a daily basis, even in the most developed cities (New Delhi). As a result, any respectable business maintains a diesel generator.A storage tank in Dabhol under construction in 2001. It was part of Enron’s most audacious and most troubled, power project ever – failed venture by Enron. $20 billion scheme to reshape India’s energy sector. Considered by many critics to be the biggest fraud in India’s history. THE ULTIMATE SYMBOL OF THE FAILURE OF GLOBALIZATION.
