The Hupa tribe lived in the northern coastal region of California, where the climate was wet and green. They subsisted primarily on salmon and acorns caught through hunting and gathering. The Hupa built plank houses and sweat lodges suited to the environment. Natural resources included palm trees, and women wore deerskin skirts sometimes decorated with shells. Villages typically had fewer than ten houses, and men would cleanse in sweat lodges after praying. The Hupa did not need to spend much time finding food.
