The Himalayas played a key role in one of Earth's major extinction events. Around 50 million years ago, the collision between the Indian subcontinent and Asia led to the formation of the Himalayan mountain range. This collision likely contributed to global cooling and changes in ocean circulation, causing many species to go extinct during a period known as the Paleocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum.
