influence, started to gain popularity very quickly.
Celebrities from talk show host Johnny Carson to football star Joe
Namath wore X and singer Sammy Davis Jr. was reported to own two

besides plain cotton and wool, including brocade, vinyl and sharkskin.
But the fad ended within just a few years and suddenly it became a

• Born in a town called Gadag in the
erstwhile Dharwad district of Karnataka.
X was the eldest among 16 siblings. In
1933, the 11-year-old X left Dharwad for
Bijapur to find a master and learn music.
With the help of money lent by his co-
passengers in the train, ______ reached
Pune and in 1936, Sawai Gandharva, a
native of Dharwad agreed to become his
guru. X gave his first live performance at
the age of 19.
The Hindu, in an article written after he
was awarded the Bharat Ratna, said: “ X
was ever the wanderer, engendering
brilliant phrases and tans more
intuitively than through deliberation”.

• The following is an excerpt from X’s
autobiography, “I was summoned to Bombay to
persuade Lord Mountbatten to persuade the
Queen to attend the premiere of ______ in
London….. After listening to Pearl Buck, he turned
to his aide- “ William, remind me when we get
back to London. I don’t know if the Queen will be
free…” A person who as a viceroy had handled
the colossal task of transferring power from
Britain to India in 1947, now to be expected to

• X was born to a Turkish Family in Central Asia. He was
sold as a slave in his childhood to the Qazi of Nishapur.
He was very well treated by the Qazi and imparted
good education, including training in archery and
horsemanship in his childhood. However when the
master died, his jealous sons, sold X to a slave
merchant. He was finally bought by Y and became one
of his most trusted nobles. He gradually rose to the
rank of General and was responsible for most of the
North Indian annexations which gave Y immense
control over the region.

• X was born in Bombay to Pattipati Ramaiah, a nuclear physicist
working under the supervision of Marie Curie and a journalist
mother, Dr. Marthe. In her 2009 semi-biography of anecdotes, it
was related that her grandfather on her mother's side owned a
factory where he fired a young Benito Mussolini for beating up a
coworker, and her grandmother had a strange interlude with a
Russian prince who was their next door neighbour and later turned
out to be one of Rasputin's assassins. Her aunt was a well known
Indian Independence fighter. She made her film debut alongside
Balraj Sahni in “Anuradha”. After watching her performance in “The
Householder”, Satyajit Ray planned an english film, the journey,
with marlon brando, shashi kapoor and X.

her to cast her in his films.

• The ancient recipe of this dish dates back to the
Ain-i-Akbari where beef was stewed overnight in
a “deg”.
• Around 1784, in a famine struck Oudh, this recipe
was re-invented in order to serve warm food to
the workers employed by Nawab Asaf-ud-Daulah

• The demon Sahasrakavacha was blessed by Surya to
have 100 armors, each of which would require 1000
years of meditation followed by 1000 years of fighting
him to destroy.
• Two sages who set out to destroy him took turns
where one would combat him and the other would
meditate in preparation.
• When it came down to the last armor, the demon
sought Surya’s help and took a mortal form, X.
• The sages followed, being born as Y and Z and finally
killed the demon.

• In the words of Ramesh Chauhan, “Our company was
started by my father and his 4 brothers in ______
village, where the factory was set up in the family
cattle shed. Due to lack of professional backup, nobody
could come up with a name and the factory simply
adopted the name of the village”.

World War 2 came to the rescue. The British
counterparts which ruled the market till then could not
fulfil the demands due to shortage of supply.
