I. Background
This report on design statistics for the year 2023 has been prepared by BananaIP Counsels
(“BananaIP”) as a part of its knowledge dissemination initiatives. The report is based on the
information and data available on the Indian Intellectual Property (IP) Office website and
databases, and is accurate to the extent of data publication, availability, and searchability.
Over the last 10 years, BananaIP has been publishing IP statistics reports on a weekly,
monthly, and yearly basis on Intellepedia, the firm’s IP News resource, and this report
continues BananaIP’s ongoing contribution to the flow of knowledge in the field of intellectual
property. It may be noted that this report provides data based on calendar years as opposed
to the reports of the IP Office, which are based on financial years.
II. Structure
This report is divided into two parts and provides valuable insights into design registrations in
India.
Part 1- Comparative Design Data (2019 - 2023)
This section offers a comparative overview of design activities between the years 2019 and
2023. It includes data on registration of designs, allowing stakeholders to understand design
registration trends over the past five years.
Part 2 – Design Statistics – 2023
This part provides statistics for the year 2023. Data in this part provides stakeholders an insight
into specific design trends in the year 2023.
III. Part 1- Comparative Design Registration Data (2019 -
2023)
The design statistics for the years 2019 to 2023 provide interesting insights with respect to
design activities in India. They indicate a robust upward trend in recent years.
Key Findings – Design Registrations in India (2019 -2023)
 There has been a substantial increase in design registrations in India from 2019 to
2023.
 In 2023, the total number of design registrations reached 28,324, marking an increase
of about 285% from 2019.

 Compared to 2022, which had 15,904 registrations, there was an impressive growth of
nearly 78% in 2023.
 Despite a minor fluctuation in 2021, the overall trend showcases a positive trajectory
in design registrations over the past five years.
The table below provides specific statistics for each year from 2019 to 2023.

IV. Part 2- Design Registration Statistics – 2023
The design data indicates a significant increase in registrations during 2023.
Key findings – Design Registrations (2023)
 Design registrations in India witnessed a substantial year-on-year growth, reaching
28,324 in 2023 compared to 15,904 in 2022.
 The significant increase of 77.8% reflects a thriving interest and engagement in design
protection within the country during this period.
The Table hereunder provides statistics relating to design registrations for the calendar year
2023.

V. Conclusion
The period from 2019 to 2023 witnessed a substantial and consistent increase in design
registrations in India. The remarkable growth in 2023, reflecting a nearly 78% surge from 2022,
underscores a positive trajectory in the country's design protection landscape. Despite a minor
fluctuation in 2021, the overall trend signifies a robust and upward momentum over the past
five years, indicating a heightened interest and engagement in design innovation and
registrations.
