(1) The document examines why patients in Palestine use traditional medicine to treat burns. It conducted a cross-sectional study of 290 burn patients admitted to a hospital in Hebron, Palestine in 2020.
(2) The study found that 29% of admissions used traditional medicine after their burns. The most common reasons for using traditional medicine were believing it does not leave scars after healing (70%), rapid healing (70%), and thinking traditional medicine is better than conventional treatments (57%).
(3) Sources of information about traditional burn treatments included friends (22%), the internet (53.3%), media (16.8%), and family (15%). The study found no significant differences in reasons for using traditional medicine based on
This study assessed the knowledge of relatives of burn patients regarding first aid treatment of burns. A survey was conducted of 150 relatives of patients admitted to the burn unit of a hospital in Palestine over one year. The results showed that most relatives had received information about first aid from doctors and nurses or media like TV. However, over half had not received prior first aid training. While two-thirds knew to use cool running water for burns, knowledge regarding timing, duration and other aspects was lower. Females and those informed by healthcare workers had higher overall knowledge scores. The study concluded that greater training is needed for the public, especially on burn first aid, to improve initial management and reduce morbidity from such injuries.
This certificate recognizes that Purshottam Hoovayya successfully completed an online course called "Health in Numbers: Quantitative Methods in Clinical & Public Health Research" offered through HarvardX and edX. It was issued on February 1st, 2013 and signed by two professors from the Harvard School of Public Health and Harvard Medical School who taught the course.
1) The document discusses enhancing knowledge about Hepatitis-C among people who inject drugs (PWID) in Bangladesh, as PWID are highly vulnerable to Hepatitis-C infection.
2) According to a survey of 897 PWID in Bangladesh, only 26% had ever heard of Hepatitis-C, despite high rates of infection.
3) The conclusion recommends that HIV prevention programs in Bangladesh should provide more training and emphasis on Hepatitis-C for harm reduction outreach workers and PWID, to increase awareness and screening.
The document discusses a 1998 HIV outbreak at a children's hospital in Libya. Over 400 children were deliberately injected with HIV by a Palestinian medical intern and five Bulgarian nurses. The medical team was accused of experimenting on newborn babies. They were found guilty, sentenced to death, but later said they were tortured. Their sentences were eventually commuted to life in prison, then they were extradited to Bulgaria and freed. Experts said poor control and prevention, not the medical team, likely caused the outbreak.

Traditional medicine and safety of traditional medicine.pptxManish Gautam
The World Health Organization (WHO) acknowledges the global importance and diversity of traditional and complementary medicine practices. WHO recognizes the valuable role of traditional medicine in healthcare delivery, particularly at the primary level. However, WHO emphasizes the need to integrate traditional medicine safely and effectively based on scientific evidence of efficacy and safety to avoid harm and ensure high-quality healthcare.
Traditional medicine has strengths like being effective for psychosocial diseases, having easy access, and shared values between patients and curers. It serves many developing societies and influences modern medicine. Treatment is holistic and cheap. However, it lacks scientific standards, can have hygiene problems, and improper dosages. It also cannot effectively treat bacterial/viral diseases or prevent other infections.
Scientific medicine can overcome health problems and is effective against many diseases through scientific methods. It has less risk of unnecessary outcomes from issues like dosage, hygiene, etc. and promotes health and longevity. However, it fails to treat the whole person, can have unequal patient-practitioner relationships, and may not be accessible to all.
Ayurveda is an ancient Indian system of medicine that uses herbs, diet, yoga, and other techniques. Clinical trial research is needed in Ayurveda to scientifically prove safety and efficacy as demand grows globally. While some research institutions conduct trials, more are needed, especially long-term trials of particular products to support quality control and regulatory standards for international export. Current trials focus more on academic purposes rather than specific products, and postgraduate programs have time limits, hindering long trials. More research is still required to scientifically validate Ayurvedic treatments and fulfill regulatory standards.
This document summarizes a research study on the facilitators and barriers to herbal medicine use in Accra, Ghana. The study found that factors that facilitated herbal medicine use included: effective information from friends/family initiating its use; perceptions of herbal medicine's effectiveness in curing diseases versus western medicine only managing them; personal preferences; and the integration of spirituality. Barriers included: negative perceptions; poor vending environments; inconsistent effectiveness; and high costs. The study concluded that while Ghanaians use herbal medicine, negative perceptions from deceitful producers call for improved education and monitoring to ensure effective and safe herbal products.
Traditional medicine may be regarded as the branch of medicine whose philosophy is rooted in the enhancement of body’s own healing power through the use of natural means. It is the oldest form of health care system that has stood the test of time. In South Africa, traditional medicine encapsulates a myriad of health practices, approaches, knowledge, and beliefs. Most people in South Africa prefer using traditional medicine to Western medicine because they believe that traditional medicine is more efficient, accessible, and affordable. This paper focuses on the use of traditional medicine among indigenous rural and urban communities in South Africa. Matthew N. O. Sadiku | Uwakwe C. Chukwu | Abayomi Ajayi-Majebi | Sarhan M.
