India's Supreme Court has recognised transgender
people as a third gender, in a landmark ruling that may
offer gay people a glimmer of hope.
"It is the right of every human being to choose their
gender," the court said in granting rights to those who
identify themselves as neither male nor female.
The court ordered the government to provide
transgender people with quotas in jobs and education
in line with other minorities, as well as key amenities.
There is a sacredness in tears. They are not the mark
of weakness, but of power. They speak more
eloquently than ten thousand tongues. They are the
messengers of overwhelming grief, of deep contrition,
and of unspeakable love.
