In vitro fertilization (IVF) is a laboratory procedure where sperm and eggs are combined outside of the body in a Petri dish. If fertilization is successful, the embryo is transferred into the uterus in hopes of achieving pregnancy. IVF was originally developed to help women with damaged or absent Fallopian tubes become pregnant. While most countries allow IVF, Costa Rica and Libya are the only two that have banned the procedure. In Costa Rica, the Constitutional Court ruled IVF violates fundamental rights to life and human dignity. This has left many infertile couples unable to have children and facing legal challenges. The debate around legalizing IVF in Costa Rica centers around both protecting life and allowing couples their right to have children through
