Spain, course aimed at teachers
who want to understand the
flamenco beyond clichés

FORMATION OBJECTIVES
• The formation suggests going off to explore this popular art native of Andalusia,
in a playful and alive way. Far from clichés, we shall be interested in the essence
and spirit of an art in perpetual evolution, which knew how to keep its identity
over time and was recognized Immaterial Cultural heritage of the Humanity in
2010.
FORMATION CONTENTS
In what period and in which contexts appeared the flamenco? Who were his first interpreters? What role played the
Gypsies in his creation? How was it perceived in the Andalusian society of this period? How did it evolve until our days?
Such are the questions in which we shall be interested at first.
2) An alive culture
The flamenco is an art which is exported on the more important scenes of the world, at the same time as it continues to
live also in the intimacy of private parties combining professionals and « aficionados ». For the latter, certainly it
constitutes an art, but also a way of being, feeling and thinking. We shall discover the wealth of this culture shared by
the « flamencos », made in particular by shared rites, by a collective memory, by a language, by an ethic.
3) Complex forms. A little of practice
Popular complex Art, which allies song, dance, guitar and percussions, the flamenco divides palos (or styles of song),
which are generally difficult to recognize at first sight for the layman (soleá, seguiriya, tangos, alegrías …). We shall get
acquainted with his main styles and we shall introduce to mark the compás (specific rhythmic structure). As listeners -
spectators, we shall also see that the flamenco expresses all the types of the feelings
MÉTHODOLOGY
• The formation will be made in a interactive way: structured around the themes
evoked above, it will make way for the questions and for the exchanges. The
formation (always interactive), will be enriched by diverse audio-visual media
(videos, CD), participative experiments (palmas) and the visit of Sacromonte
(district flamenco gypsy of Granada).
TEACHER
• Eve Brenel is a senior lecturer in sociology and anthropology at the Sorbonne
Nouvelle-Paris University (currently available). Holder of a double doctorate in
socio-anthropology Universities of Besançon and Grenada (co-supervised France-
Spain), his research focuses mainly on artistic production as a collective process.
Through the privileged object of flamenco (singing, music and dance), she is
interested in the production and transmission of artistic cultures and collective
identities, the links between aesthetics and ethics, and the process of
perpetuation. of folk art, in the dialectic between tradition and innovation
