Standing on shoulder of giants building Core Digital Media's data platform using Big Data technologies by Sooraj Akkammadam, ETL Architect, Core Digital Media
Core Digital Media is one of the leading advertisers in the online space. We are responsible for about a fifth of the ads a person sees online on a day to day basis. This is accomplished by our Marketing team, who continues to find performance wins by leveraging proprietary algorithms, deep learning models and advanced analytics to optimize the Ad spend. All these frameworks rely on the performance data available in the Core Digital Media’s Enterprise Data Warehouse - EDW to make decisions. The performance data is collected from a multitude of marketing channels like Social - Facebook, Search - Google, Content - Taboola, Media, Affiliate and Retention and integrated into EDW. Timely and consistent availability of data in EDW is extremely critical for marketing optimization. This talk details how we migrated our Marketing data loads from a legacy ETL platform to a data infrastructure built around Apache Kafka and Apache Spark, using Python and Scala. This migration not only lead to a reduction in data availability times from an average of 60+ minutes to 2 mins but also we are able to load 24*7 into the EDW. As a part of the talk we will talk about why we chose Kafka and Spark Structured streaming for this, what were some of the challenges we faced and also some of the best practices to follow for implementing data streaming architectures.

Observability has never been more important: the complexity of microservices makes it harder and harder to answer basic questions about system behavior. The conventional wisdom claims that Metrics, Logging and Tracing are “the three pillars” of observability… yet software organizations check these three boxes and are still grasping at straws during emergencies.
In this session, we’ll illustrate the problem with the three pillars: metrics, logs, and traces are just data – they are the fuel, not the car.

The Plan Cache Whisperer - Performance Tuning SQL Server
Execution plans tell SQL Server how to execute queries. If you listen closely, execution plans can also tell you when performance-tuning opportunities exist in your environment. By listening to your queries, you can understand how SQL Server is operating and gain insight into how your environment is functioning. In this session, learn how to use XQuery to browse and search the plan cache, enabling you to find potential performance issues and opportunities to tune your queries. In addition, learn how a performance issue on a single execution plan can be used to find similar issues on other execution plans, enabling you to scale up your performance tuning effectiveness. You can use this information to help reduce issues related to parallelism, shift queries from using scans to using seek operations, or discover exactly which queries are using which indexes. All this and more is readily available through the plan cache.

In today's world data mining have increasingly become very interesting and popular in terms of all applications especially in the
banking industry. We have too much data and too much technology but don't have useful information. This is why we need data
mining process. The importance of data mining is increasing and studies have been done in many domains to solve tons of
problems using various data mining techniques. The art of preparing data for data mining is the most important and time
consuming phase. In developing countries like India, bankers should vigilant to fraudsters because they will create more problems
to the banking organization. Applying data mining techniques, it is very effective to build a successful predictive model that helps
the bankers to take the proper decision. This paper covers the set of techniques under the umbrella of data preprocessing based
on a case study of bank loan transaction data. The proposed model will help to distinguish borrowers who repay loans promptly
from those who do not. The frame work helps the organizations to implement better CRM by applying better prediction ability.

My talk from GOTO Aarhus, 30th September 2014. Cogenta is a retail intelligence company which tracks ecommerce web sites around the world to provide competitive monitoring and analysis services to retailers. Using its proprietary crawler technology, Lucene and SQL Server, a stream of 20 million raw product data entries is captured and processed each day. This case study looks at how Cogenta uses Elasticsearch to break the shackles imposed by the RDBMS (and a limited budget) to make the data available in real time to its customers.
Cogenta uses SQL as its canonical store & for complex reporting, and Elasticsearch for real-time processing & to drive its SaaS web applications. Elasticsearch is easy to use, delivers the powerful features of Lucene and enables the data & platform cost to scale linearly. But… synchronising your existing data in two places presents some interesting challenges such as aggregation and concurrency control. This talk will take a detailed look at how Cogenta how overcame those challenges, with a perpetually changing and asynchronously updated dataset.
