In the Pranamayakosha or the energy body, there are 72,000 nadis. The 72,000 nadis spring from three
basic nadis – the left, the right and the central – the Ida, Pingala, and Sushumna. The word “nadi”
does not mean nerve. Nadis are pathways or channels of prana in the system. These 72,000 nadis don’t
have a physical manifestation. As you become more aware, you will notice the energy is not moving at
random, it is moving in established pathways. There are 72,000 different ways in which the energy or prana
moves.
Classical yogic texts state that there are 72,000 nadis. The nadis energize the subtle body in a manner
similar to the way the nervous system energizes the physical body. In fact, the nadis are the astral template
of the nerves themselves. The mind is the astral template of the brain. Whereas the brain is the initiator of
energy carried by the nerves, our mind (manas) and higher faculties such as the buddhi (intellect) are the
initiators of the energy carried by the nadis in the subtle body.
The 144,000 represent the spiritual, subtle nerve pathways that enliven the physical nervous
system. The dual positive/negative manifestations of the 72,000 neutral nadis set forth in yogic
traditions. Perhaps it is easier to think of the 144,000 as a blueprint, unblemished and still perfect in
form and concept before construction begins.

Christianity: Book of Revelation: The number 144,000 appears three times in the Book of Revelation.
Revelation 7:3–8: saying: "Do not harm the earth or the sea or the trees, until we have sealed the
servants of God on their foreheads. “And I heard the number of the sealed, 144,000, sealed from every
tribe of the sons of Israel: Revelation 14:1: Then I looked, and behold, on Mount Zion stood the Lamb, and
with him 144,000 who had his name and his Father's name written on their foreheads. Revelation

Skoptsy believers, based on their reading of the Book of Revelation.
Unification Church founded by Reverend Sun Myung Moon believes the 144,000 represents the total
number of saints whom Christ must find "who can restore through indemnity the missions of all the
past saints who, despite their best efforts to do God's Will, fell prey to Satan when they failed in their
responsibilities.
Islam: 144,000 is said to have been the number of Companions (Sahaba) of Muhammad.
A Baktun is 20 Katun cycles of the ancient Maya Long Count calendar, which contains 144,000 days.
