Building a Hybrid Cloud with AWS and VMware vSphereBuurst
Gartner predicts hybrid clouds will be the most common cloud architecture by 2020. With AWS and VMware vSphere, companies have the ability to create a hybrid cloud architecture with ease. But what is the optimal storage architecture for a hybrid cloud? What’s the best way to build it? How do you guarantee your data will be highly-available and protected?
This webinar covers:
-Hybrid cloud architecture with AWS and vSphere
-Use Cases: backup, disaster recovery and more
-Demo: Learn how to replicate storage across vSphere and AWS
-Common management interface across on-premises vSphere and AWS deployments
Should you keep your On-Premises NAS: Upgrade, Pay Maintenance or Public Cloud?Buurst
The maintenance bill is due for your on-premises SAN/NAS--or it just increased. It’s hundreds of thousands or millions of dollars just to keep your existing storage gear under maintenance. And you know you will need to purchase more storage capacity for this aged hardware. Do you renew and commit another 3-5 years by paying the storage bill and further commit to a data center architecture? Do you make a forklift upgrade and buy new SAN/NAS gear or move to hyperconverged infrastructure? Do you move to the AWS cloud for greater flexibility and agility? Will you give up security and data protection?
In this webinar and demo, we covered:
1. Pros/Cons: on-premises SAN/NAS vs. hyperconverged infrastructure vs. AWS cloud storage
2. Demo: “Lift and shift” on-premises storage to AWS without re-architecting applications
3. How to fund a move to public cloud storage with existing budget
4. TCO analysis
5. Other public cloud use cases
The document provides an overview of hybrid architectures and how to design, build, and manage distributed applications across hybrid infrastructures using Amazon Web Services. It discusses topics like interconnectivity, availability, security, hybrid networks with AWS VPC and Direct Connect, and automated provisioning with AWS CloudFormation and configuration management with AWS OpsWorks. Example hybrid architectures are also presented, including a SAP HANA deployment across an on-premises data center and AWS VPC, and a company running applications in multiple cloud providers.

This document provides advice for those wanting to be a startup CTO. It notes that you will likely fail most of the time as a startup CTO but that failure is okay. It emphasizes that startups are about market fit rather than technology alone. The document encourages focusing on choosing the right CEO over technology and learning about business topics like contracts and pricing. It outlines four ways to innovate - creating more good, less bad, cheaper products and easier to use products. Finally, it recommends avoiding following trends and focusing on the next logical product step rather than excessive innovation.
Tech Talk #2: Docker - From $1 Billion Startup to the Future Industry StandardNexus FrontierTech
Docker started as a 1 billion dollar startup and is now the future industry standard for containers. It allows packaging applications with all dependencies into standardized units. Docker provides tools like Engine, Registry, Machine and Swarm to build, ship and run distributed apps anywhere. It is widely used for continuous integration/delivery and DevOps. The Open Container Project aims to create open standards, while runC runs containers according to the spec. Docker is growing rapidly with many companies now supporting it.
This document discusses using Docker containers with OpenStack. Key points include:
- A Docker plugin allows controlling Docker containers via the OpenStack Nova API and Horizon dashboard. This enables launching, terminating, rebooting and managing the lifecycle of Docker containers as if they were virtual machines.
- Heat orchestration templates can be used to define Docker resources and automate the deployment of multi-container applications on OpenStack. Heat integrates with the Docker API to start and stop containers.
- Developers can test OpenStack using Docker by running DevStack inside a container, allowing containers to be used like virtual machines for testing and development purposes.

Designing a cloud data system architecture that protects your precious data when operating business-critical applications and workloads in the cloud is of paramount importance to cloud architects today. Ensuring the high-availability for your company’s applications and protecting business data is challenging and somewhat different than in traditional on-premise data centers.
For most companies with hundreds to thousands of applications, it’s impractical to build all of these important capabilities into every application’s design architecture. The cloud storage infrastructure typically only provides a subset of what’s required to properly protect business data and applications.
So how do you ensure your business data and applications are architected correctly and protected in the cloud?
In this webinar, we covered:
-Best Practices for protecting business data in the cloud
-How To design a protected and highly-available cloud system architecture
-Lessons Learned from architecting thousands of cloud system architectures

When choosing a product for cloud data storage, it’s critical to understand the differences between an enterprise-class, full featured NAS virtual storage appliance like SoftNAS Cloud versus basic file services products.
For enterprise-class workloads, data protection requirements like high-availability, replication, snapshots and RAID support are important. For security and data protection, consider products that provide at-rest encryption, in-transit encryption, snapshots and rollback. For optimization between cost and performance, consider choosing products that allow a mix of performance solutions and cost savings solutions.
Network Attached Storage (NAS) software is commonly deployed to provide shared file services to users and applications. SoftNAS Cloud, a popular NAS solution that can be deployed from the Amazon Web Services (AWS) Marketplace, is designed to support a variety of market verticals, use cases, and workload types.
SoftNAS Cloud is deployed on the AWS platform to enable block and file storage services through NFS, CIFS/SMB, iSCSI and AFP.
