Digital mapping tools have significantly impacted how people navigate compared to pre-21st century methods. Previously, people relied on hand-drawn maps, paper maps, or compasses for navigation, but now tools like Google Maps and navigation systems in cellphones provide voice-guided directions anytime. While these new tools offer convenience, their use while driving has also led to more accidents when drivers focus on their phones instead of the road or feel rushed to reach their destination. The impact of digital maps has been a double-edged sword, improving navigation but also potentially contributing to more traffic incidents.

He showcased several examples of data visualizations and maps created at Duke University and described the tools and workshops used to create visualizations. Finally, he outlined future directions for data services, including increased use of visualization for data management/analysis and expansion of data literacy instruction across disciplines.
