Editor's Notes

  1. Need to request the following equipment from the university: Computer with available USB port connected to a projector 3 Easels with self-adhesive newsprint/butcher paper (we will bring pens) Lavaliere microphone for the speaker 2 Hand-held microphones for the assistants to use with the audienceProvide short bullet introduction for Sallyanne
  2. Nature: Information sharing, thoughtful reflection, call to actionReview folder – handouts and note-taking guide
  3. Tell participants to use the space provided in their handout
  4. 1. Discuss what occurred, and how they felt about the process2. Discussion points: time, accuracy and level of confidence in the processCall upon “back home” experience and applicationTransition to Modes of Communication by asking “besides the obvious verbal and non verbal aspects of this exercise, what dominant symbol did you notice? (The easel – distancing/barrier)
  5. Symbols from the exercise: easel turned away is perceived as a barrier – printed rules are perceived as bindingSymbolic communications can send both intentional and unintentional messages about status, philosophy, marital status, confidence, openness
  6. Exercise – in trios, reach agreement on which is wetter – damp or moist? Ask for a hand vote – should be some of each to make the point about people carrying the meaning
  7. Other non-verbals include: Ambulation – how you carry your body in movement Posturing – how you position your body when stationary Tics – involuntary nervous spasmsSubvocals – non-words that carry meaningVocalism – vocal “packaging” signals true meaning
  8. In trios have one person repeat the sentence, “I love my Advisor” four times, each time emphasizing a different word. Discuss the impacts when the emphasis is changed.
  9. Ask them to reflect for a moment about their communication with a specific individual that has been difficult. Write down their name, and write down the barrier which they think they have erected that impacts the communication (we will do more with this later)Transition – How we communicate is one of the Keys to creating Executive Presence, so keep in mind those things we have discussed – your symbols of choice, how you communicate verbally and non-verbally, and what barriers you allow to keep you from communicating effectively, and let’s look at how all of that impacts Executive Presence.
  10. Your personal brand includes your web presence and your web shadowDefine web presence and web shadow
  11. So, how do we put all of this together?
