This document summarizes a study on the cognitive effects of long-term multivitamin use in older men. The study found:
1) Daily intake of a multivitamin over 12 years among nearly 6000 healthy elderly male physicians did not provide any cognitive benefits or protection compared to placebo based on cognitive tests.
2) The study was well-designed and conducted but its population of older, well-educated male physicians may have already been well-nourished, limiting any potential benefits of multivitamin supplementation.
3) Multivitamin supplementation may need to begin earlier in life to have meaningful cognitive benefits.
