IllumiRoom is a concept developed by Microsoft Research that uses projected visuals to enhance the television viewing experience by augmenting the area around the TV screen. It was designed to cover surrounding walls and ceilings with images from a game console like the Xbox to make the user feel like they are inside the game. While this seems like an exciting potential development for home entertainment, it remains in the research phase and it is unclear when or if it will become commercially available.

3. IllumiRoom is a proof-of-concept system
from Microsoft Research.
It augments the area surrounding a
television screen with projected visualizations
to enhance the traditional living room
entertainment experience.

4. According to Microsoft, this “proof-of-concept”
was designed by Brett Jones, Hrvoje
Benko, Eyal Ofek and Andy Wilson.

9. This was just a short clip of how the IllumiRoom
will work, which is to say covering the whole back wall
and ceiling with images from the Xbox, giving the
feeling of actually being in the game.

10. We all are salivating at the idea of having this in our
living rooms. Imagine games like Halo and Call of Duty on
this system? Truly next generation.
Currently tucked away in some mysterious corner of
Microsoft’s research and development department, the
jury's out on when we’ll see this come to store. Could it be
part of the upcoming Xbox 720? We’ll just have to wait and
see .
