Ilja Jefimovics Repin was a renowned Ukrainian painter and sculptor born in 1844 who worked in the realist style. Some of his most famous works included portraits of his family members, compositions depicting scenes from Russian history and literature such as Ivan the Terrible and His Son Ivan and The Reply of the Zaporozhian Cossacks to Sultan Mahmoud IV, and depictions of everyday life in Russia like Barge Haulers on the Volga. Repin produced many paintings and sculptures portraying important Russian writers, composers, and public figures during his career that spanned from the 1860s until his death in 1930.
