This project report summarizes experiments conducted to develop a method to solidify a fluoride-removing aluminum hydroxide oxide gel into a solid block that can be used in a water purification cartridge. Initial experiments using pressurization and freeze drying resulted in a fine powder. The addition of a binder was found to be necessary to form a solid block. Experiments tested various binders including cement, silica gel, calcium oxide with sugar, and chitosan. Chitosan was found to form a solid block when crosslinked with glutaraldehyde, though it decayed after 12 hours soaking.
