A group of 150 cyclists were injured when a banker sped through them with his car in Porto Alegre, Brazil. In response, over 2,000 people protested against impunity and in favor of the right to ride bicycles. This sparked a movement that led to community workshops, bike rides, art exhibitions, and the first World Bicycle Forum a year later to discuss bicycling as transportation and culture. The Forum was a success with over 7,000 participants from Brazil and other countries and extensive media coverage, helping to promote bicycling as more people began using bikes for transportation.
