I-Tier: Breaking Up the Monolith @ Philly ETESean McCullough
Groupon recently completed a year-long project to migrate its U.S. web traffic from a monolithic Ruby on Rails application to a new multi-application stack with substantial results.
Groupon’s entire U.S. web frontend had been a single Rails codebase from its inception in 2008. The frontend codebase quickly grew large, which made it difficult to maintain and challenging to ship new
features. As a solution to this gigantic monolith, we decided to re-architect the frontend by splitting it into small, independent and more manageable pieces. At the center of this project, we rebuilt each
major section of the website as an independent application. We also rebuilt the infrastructure to make all the independent apps work together. Interaction Tier (I-Tier) was the result.
Learn about how Groupon achieved this great architecture migration and the business results it is driving.
How to Build Front-End Web Apps that Scale - FutureJSPhil Leggetter
Developing large apps is difficult. Ensuring that code is consistent, well structured, tested, maintainable and has an architecture that encourages enhancement is essential. When it comes to large server-focused apps, solutions to this problem have been tried and tested. But, with the ongoing dramatic shift of functionality into the browser, how do you achieve this when building Front-End Web Apps?
In this talk we’ll cover the signs to watch out for as your HTML5 SPA grows and provide examples of some of the tooling types that can contribute-to - as well as ease - the growing pains. Finally, we’ll demonstrate how tooling can be used to support a set of conventions, practices and principles that enable a productive developer workflow where the first line of code is feature code, features can be developed in isolation, code conflicts are avoided by grouping assets by feature and features are composed into apps.
The demonstrations will use the BladeRunnerJS open source developer toolkit, but the concepts are widely applicable.
Transitioning Groupon to Node.js - EmpireJS 2014Sean McCullough
Groupon's monolithic platform was struggling to support growth and feature development. They rewrote part of it using a Node.js service-oriented architecture with decoupled frontend applications and shared backend services. This allowed for faster development and improved performance, but also introduced increased testing needs and operational complexity compared to the monolithic approach.
Thrillers are fast-paced stories involving heroes facing powerful adversaries. Common thriller techniques include red herrings, cliffhangers, and conflicts between individuals and large organizations. Specific thriller subgenres include spy thrillers focusing on government agents battling terrorism; political thrillers about ensuring government stability; military thrillers with heroes operating behind enemy lines; conspiracy thrillers where the hero confronts hidden powerful enemies; medical thrillers involving principled doctors fighting corruption; forensic thrillers with experts tracking serial killers; psychological thrillers involving mental/emotional rather than physical conflicts; and horror thrillers combining physical threats with psychological elements.

The document discusses how intentions alone are not enough, and that actions are needed to achieve results. It emphasizes that people care more about what you do rather than what you intend or think. It then provides an action guideline for students of meditation, outlining steps like having faith in your higher mind/self to take action, not doubting yourself, giving credit to your higher mind for successes, and maintaining a positive attitude. The overall message is that intentions must be paired with action in order to attain goals and fulfillment.

Sustain higher performance with less toll on battery life with the Dell Latit...Principled Technologies
Get better benchmark performance, longer battery life, and better thermal and acoustic experiences than with a Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 11
For hybrid and remote workers who transport devices from place to place, any environment has the potential to become a work environment. A high-performing, portable laptop can be key to a positive user experience, and so can longer battery life, lower heat output, and quieter acoustics. According to publicly available information, the Dell Latitude Ultralight 7440 starts at a weight 0.15 lb. (or .06 kg) less than the starting weight of the Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 11.14,15 When we ran tests on both laptops, we kept the systems unplugged to measure what kind of performance and battery consumption a user might expect during their workday. The Dell system achieved performance equivalent to or better than the Lenovo system while requiring minimal to no additional battery life to do so. We found that not only did it deliver 12 hours and 2 minutes of battery life—a workday and a half—but it also ran quieter in our tests. Our testing also showed that the Dell system ran cooler under an intensive workload, potentially reducing processor throttling to deliver better performance. Whatever the work environment, these results indicate that the Dell Latitude 7440 Ultralight Laptop
