8. TYPE 1
Truths in the Present or Future
In these sentences, the time is the present
or future and the situation is real. They
refer to a possible condition and its
probable result. They are based on facts,
and they are used to make statements about
the real world, and about particular
situations
10. If I study, I will pass the exams.
If you see John tonight, tell him to e-mail me.
If Ben gets up early he can catch the bus.
11. Examples:
Truth = It may rain . If so , we will eat inside.
Cond. Sentence = If it rains we will eat inside.
Truth = The cat might die . In that case , Arda
will be upset.
Cond. Sentence = If the cat dies , Arda will
be upset.
12. Truth = Why don"t you ask for a pay rise ?
You"ll probably get one.
Cond. Sentence = If you ask for a pay rise , you
will probably get one.
Truth = The office may be closed . In that case ,
we won"t be able to get in.
Cond. Sentence = If the office is closed we won’t
be able to get in.
13. TYPE 2
Unreal Present or Future
In these sentences, the time is now or any
time, and the situation is unreal. They are not
based on fact, and they refer to an unlikely or
hypothetical condition and its probable
result. The use of the past tense after 'if'
indicates unreality. We can nearly always add
a phrase starting with "but", that expresses the
real situation.
14. If + Simple PAST, Modal + V1
If I were you, I wouldn’t do that.
If I had enough money, I would lend you some.
15. Examples:
Truth= I am not rich , so I can not buy a Ferrari.
Cond. Sentence= If I were rich , I would buy a
Ferrari.
16. Truth= She is so shy ; That is why she doesn’t
enjoy parties.
Cond. Sentence= If she weren’t so shy , she
would enjoy parties.
17. Truth= We don’t have a central heating
system , so the house is rather cold.
Cond. Sentence= If we had central heating , the
house wouldn’t be cold.
Truth= Because I cannot drive , I cannot take
the car.
Cond. Sentence= If I could drive , I could take
the car.
18. Type 3
Untrue in the past
In these sentences, the time is past, and the
situation is contrary to reality. The facts they
are based on are the opposite of what is
expressed, and they refer to an unreal past
condition and its probable past result.

Cond. Sentence: If I hadn"t driven so fast,
I wouldn’t have had an accident.
23. Mixed type
It is possible for the two parts of a
conditional sentence to refer to different
times, and the resulting sentence is a "mixed
conditional" sentence. There are two types
of mixed conditional sentence:

The tense in the if clause is the past
perfect,and the tense in the main clause is
the present conditional

They refer to an unreal past condition and

If you'd caught that plane you'd be dead now.
(you didn’t catch the plane so you are alive)
28. The tense in the If-clause is the simple past,
and the tense in the main clause is the
perfect conditional

reality - I didn't pick it up.
32. 'If we didn't trust him' is contrary to present
reality - we do trust him, and 'we would have
sacked him' is contrary to past reality - we
haven't sacked him.
