This document provides a summary of the band descriptors used to evaluate IELTS writing tasks. It outlines 9 bands, with band 9 being the highest level of achievement. For each band it describes the criteria in the areas of task achievement, coherence/cohesion, lexical resource, and grammatical range. The higher the band, the more fully the task is addressed, the more cohesive and well-organized the response is, the wider the vocabulary used, and the greater the variety and accuracy of grammar and syntax. Lower bands are characterized by incomplete or minimal responses, limited vocabulary and grammatical errors.
